God, yes. And it is draining. I used to try not to engage, but you can only sit there for so long listening to her drone on & on about her perfect children and you not saying anything. After a while, it's like your kids are trolls under a bridge! And then, before I know it, I can't believe the things that come out of my mouth - she sucks me right in.
I try very hard to to see her very often.

I have someone who has to one up me on bad things. (Is that one downing me?) If I am having a bad day, he is sick. If I am sick, he is nearly dying. If I'm nearly dying, he's already dead.

Yes, I do! But MY friend is SOOOO much worse than yours! It is MUCH more irritating to me! It affects ME so much more!
But seriously, I don't know how people who do this can be so unaware, or so needing attention that they can't see how they affect people. It's draining. I have one family member who can do this on occasion, but its not all of the time, so its easier to deal with.

Dh calls it playing "I can top that".
I used to work with someone like that - one day one of our colleagues came in all excited to show us her brand new engagement ring and tell us all about how her fiance had proposed to her. Our "co-irker" (love that - it's perfect!) took one look at her ring and said "oh, that's nice... you know, my ring is a family heirloom. When my dh proposed, blah, blah, blah". Another colleague cut her off and said "you, know, Jane, we could all tell our own story, but this is Suzy's time... if we ever decide to all sit around and tell the story of how our husband's proposed and show off our rings, you can tell your story then, otherwise, let's let Suzy be the center of attention for a while".

I think we all do! I find, however, that those people are usually super insecure and that is why they constantly feel the need to "one up." If I think of it in that context, I feel more pity than anger (well, sometimes ).
