Reading all of the posts on this thread has been great. I realized today that I do not really make scrapbooks for other people to see (although they may see them). I make them because I enjoy the process. The process of taking the photos, choosing which will go in a layout, telling the story, picking paper and embellishments, and documenting life. When I work on layouts I get in a sort of zone. I do a weekly project life layout which I consider sort of like a journal with pretty papers and photos and then for layouts I just choose pictures that could be anywhere from 1 day to 34 years old. We had some friends over today and they wanted to see my scrapbooks. I felt very vulnerable and sort of shy for them to see them. The friends all seemed to like them and wondered at how long it must take to make the layouts and where do I get the supplies (I do not live in the US currently so scrapbooking supplies are not so easy to get). I felt like people were looking at something that was very personal to me even though they were just random pictures of past vacations, selfies of my husband and I, or our cat and dog.

Hi Suse! Great to see you here! And can I just say I loved your Faith, Hope, Washi videos you used to do?!!!
I'm not big into mixed media, but I'm taking baby steps in that direction. I do Project Life for my memory keeping and the occasional 12x12 for my kids' albums or childhood albums I have going for myself and DH, but yes, sometimes I make something just because I'm in the mood to play with pretty things and be creative. The very first scrapbook I ever made was our adoption portfolio about DH and myself and it was a gift to our DD's birth mom, so it was very much about memory keeping and a labor of love!
I'm not on FB either and I don't really like social media in general, so I also sometimes feel like I'm missing out by not being able to participate in a larger scrappy community. I only know 2 other people who scrap IRL, and they're both mainly digital these days, so I also really appreciate this site and all the YouTubers and people like Tracie and Tiffany who help keep a crafty community going.

I feel the same way as well! I feel very uneasy when others want to see them besides my own kids. Scrapbooking gets a bad reputation. "I wish I had that much time", "I'm so busy"....I feel like some people can be passive aggressive in their comments. I also know I'm not great at designing a good page. I copy a lot of sketches or sometimes just matt photos and put on cardstock. I think most people who don't do the hobby, don't understand it's not about recording *everything* for a lot of scrappers.

I know that some people said they did not know how I could find the time because they had never seen anything like it before (literally...never seen a scrapbook) but others were sort of "making fun" when they said they could never spend so much time on it. I told them that I have a system for PL and it takes around an hour per week to complete the layouts and that the scrapbook layouts can take longer. One lady there was a quilter and she totally "got" it. She said she has fabric like I have paper or embellishments. I tried to explain that it is my hobby. Some people like to quilt or sew or build cars or run marathons...I like to scrapbook. I would like people in my family to see my books or other scrapbookers that might actually appreciate it.
