I just encountered a situation at TJ Maxx that shouted "ask the peas!"... Would you have said anything?
A woman picked up an OPI polish in the checkout line. Opened it. Painted her thumbnail. Closed the bottle, put it back. Picked up another bottle. Painted all 10 of her daughter's nails as the line moved along. Closed it. Put it back.
What, if anything, would you have said?

That's gross and beyond rude. Had you pointed it out to her she would have gone ballistic. I might have told the manager just to have the bottles removed.

I probably wouldn't have said anything, because someone who thinks it is acceptable to do this is the kind of asshole who wouldn't respond well to or understand the reason behind anything I said.
Now, I say probably, because if I was in a mood I might say, "Huh, I usually buy the beauty products I use, not just sample them for free at the store. Interesting strategy." But that's only if I really felt in a mood to start some shit.

I would have picked the bottles up and given them to the person at my register while pointing (quietly) at the people who did it. Just so someone wouldn't buy the polish.

Meh, I'd have given an internal eyeroll and moved on. I don't care that she tried the color on herself; I would assume it was to see if she liked the color. I've done that myself. As far as the gross factor, when you go to a nail salon the brushes are used on multiple people and there is no sanitizing the brush after it touches another persons nail and I see people color testing all the time before they pick their color. I know, I'm probably the only pea that will admit to doing that, right? However, I do think painting your entire hand or both hands is probably over the top and crossing the line.

Not cool. I would have probably been too shocked to even say something to a clerk.

Yeah, the gross thing didn't even register for me, and I will ALSO admit to opening a bottle to check for how opaque a polish is (and even dabbing a bit on a nail). Nail polish bottles are used on like a million hands at a nail salon, so I don't even understand that argument. Painting a whole set of nails though ... uncool. SaveSave

I wouldn't have said anything to her and I will confess to trying out color on my fingers, but I always buy it if I have opened it.

She's only one of about ten billion women that do that regularly, especially at Wal-Mart or a place like TJ Maxx. I hate it when people do it, but you're not going to change a thing. They'll put it right back. Look at the polish at TJ's, most of them have been opened which is evident by the neck of the bottle. They know this. Hell, they sell half-empty bottles of soap at a discount price. It's kind of buyer beware there, unless it's a food product.
Nail polish isn't something that will get contaminated by someone doing that (think about nail salons), so...meh.
I always open the bottle to check out the brush and I will admit to having painted a quick swatch on paper when it's provided, like at Ulta. I hate when there aren't any testers but that's usually the way of it.

I could see someone doing that, however, you have to remember in a nail salon your nails have been cleaned. The polish is stripped then you wash your hands at the sink. She could have some dirt/bacteria on her nail that she now puts into the polish. I read an article once that said that some common item like handrails or something when tested for bacteria often has feces on it. Meaning when people are wiping themselves they unknowingly get some minuscule amount on their hands and then don't wash their hands afterwards. I would have just reported her, however I'm sure by the time the teenage staff member came she would be done.

Exactly that. The type of person that thinks this is ok is the type of person who would go nuts if you said anything. So no, I wouldn't say anything. If it was easy to identify which bottles she used I would tell the cashier in hopes they could gather them up before someone buys one.

That's gross but I wouldn't say anything. So many crazy people nowadays, you just never know how someone will react. I would have wanted to say, "Hey Lady, not a sample! You use it, you buy it." But of course I would never say that.

If she actually painted all ten of her daughter's nails while waiting in line, and the clerk didn't notice, I wouldn't say anything either. If I made eye contact with her, however, I think I would have just said "Seriously?" I can't believe the nerve of some people!

The nail polish I buy is always sealed in plastic and I have never been to a nail salon, so I guess that would ick me out more than it would other people. I would say something to the clerk.

Rude. If I knew which bottles they were I might bring them to the register and tell the cashier they had been used, but as others have mentioned they would likely just be put back on the shelf at a store like that.
It's not something I would personally do, I just buy it and take my chances. I only buy nail polish for my DD and she doesn't particularly care what they look like as long as they're her favorite colors. I do open the top of hand soap and shampoo though to sniff and see if the scents are overpowering or nasty, but I don't stick my fingers in it!

I always bring my own polish to the nail salon. How else could I do touch ups between manicures?
That said, I wouldn't have said anything because she sounds like the type to not care about making a scene. It is gross though.

Stealing, yes. Gross, no. Nail polish contains all kinds of toxic bug-killing chemicals. I've never seen mould growing in any of my oldest and grottiest bottles. Have you? Would I say anything? Probably not, but I would wish I had the guts to. Some people. ETA: I'm pretty sure in the UK all our new nail polish bottles have a seal on them. If the seal is removed, people won't buy them and the store has to write them off. That means raising the original price to cover the write-off cost, which means the product costs more for all customers.

Rude- and gross. What annabella pointed out about the salons is right. They've cleaned your nails and hands before applying the polish. I've never noticed anyone doing a self test at a salon. The norm here is take the bottles with you to your chair and the manicurist does it, after a cleanse, if you are undecided.

Probably not, but I would wish I had the guts to. Some people. You could be right about the germ factor. But what about transferring tiny bits of dust, dirt or fuzz? I want to buy a new product, not one another customer felt entitled to use as a tester. Lol, editing to say this is more conceptual outrage on my part. I don't polish my finger nails, only toes. Imagine testing color for them in a store aisle!

I think it's inconsiderate, but I save my "that's gross" for the people using the lipstick testers at Ulta, and Sephora directly on their lips.

The gross factor is a non-starter in the scheme of things. Just not worth worrying about. Nails are not that sensitive - everyone has bacteria on their hands all the time so you'd pick up any bugs from handling the bottle first anyway. It's a bit much to paint 10 nails, but no, I wouldn't have said anything because it's nothing new. RedSquirrelUK - I don't think most brands have seals....think the make-up stands at Boots, maybe the better quality brands do?

But what about transferring tiny bits of dust, dirt or fuzz? That's no different to your own bottles once you've opened and used them at home the first time.
