This is a local story for us as well. It is Amazing how many peas are from this area! So far they haven't said where the remains were or what Heinrich has said about the whole thing. I'm glad that they have him in jail but wonder what he has been doing all of these years--has he abused others?

My husband grew up in St Joseph. He was in high school when it happened. He has always told me about the case and I have been so intrigued. So interesting how many peas are from that small area...and I likely would not have seen this news update if not posted here since we live in Texas now

We moved to MN in 1991. Bittersweet I guess. So sad that this happened, and that old wounds are opened. But I am glad for the family they can bury him and have peace that he has been brought back. In the case of a missing child or the death of a child, wounds aren't reopened because they never close for families. 😔 I know you will understand so much more than me but I agree. I'm wondering how this will bring peace to his family. If anything I would imagine this will bring a finality that yes, this terrible horrific impossible thing actually did happen to their precious son. |

I'm sure they reached some type of plea deal with the scumbag who killed him, if he revealed where Jacob's body was buried.
He couldn't be charged with murder {I believe} but the porn charges were pending. I wish they would stop showing his ugly face all over the place, makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck!

What a sad story, my dh told me about this a while back and told me again today, saying he went to camp with the boy who disappeared. Today I asked him again since I thought maybe it wasn't someone he knew directly but just a person who was at the same place at the same time. Turns out he slept in the same tent as him during camp :-(
I cannot imagine being a parent with this scenario nor the brother and friend who had to witness the abduction. My heart breaks for this family, in a way they say there's closure but before I imagine they always had to have a remote hope.

There was DNA evidence that he was involved in the prior abduction and sexual assault (shortly before Jacob disappeared), although that boy lived and escaped. The police always thought the two kidnappings were connected. I think there have been more around that time as well, or at least attempts. I just read that the remains were found in a farm
Pasture 20 miles from the abduction site and a mile and a half from where Heinrich lived at the time. They aren't giving out exact location but I'm guessing it is closer to Paynesville since that is where they said Heinrich lived in 1989.

There are so many cases like this, and I just feel so heartbroken for the families. I have no idea how I would live with that uncertainty and feeling of impotence every day .
I know the case of Madelime McCann is controversial but she is similar age to my youngest and would be 13 now- not knowing what has happened to your child must be totally unbearable.

Yes, he did a plea deal with them. He will most likely go to prison for the rest of his life, but this way he will go to a "nicer" prison, vs a high security one. It's pretty sad. They have suspected him all these years, but just could NOT get the evidence they needed. I am just happy that the Wetterling family has SOME sort of closure. They just interviewed his brother recently and his quilt over not being the one taken over the years.

I know this story is poignant for many. I also think that if I just found out that my son was indeed deceased, I would not want the last moments of his life shared with the world. I know the news media has a job to do. I just wish they could have protected some of the details. "What did I do wrong?" the killer reported Jacob saying. I read this as part of a news article. The details about the sexual assault just made me (and I am sure his mother) weep. He must have been so confused and scared. I think of it as torture.  |

From what I have read, and heard on the news here, the Wetterling family wanted to know all the details. They needed to know, even knowing it would be painful. They also felt the media needed to know, as the media has played a major case in finding this guy, and getting the news out. The thanked the media. 2 more boys have come forward already as being molested by him. I don't know if it was before or after Jacob. He apparently bought the gun after the boy who just recently came forward was molested. The next person he kidnapped after he bought the gun was Jacob.

I was also in college in St. Cloud and worked close to St. Joes over the abduction and afterwards. It's haunted me since then. I believe it's got something to do with me changing my major to Criminal Justice. The helicopters, the white ribbons in the beginning that were changed to yellow over time, the Jacob's Hope song that someone write and sung almost immediately, the song being played hourly over the radio for weeks, the hourly then nightly then weekly updates... It was a big part of my college experience that year.
I think, like the Wetterling Family, I always hoped that he'd be found alive somewhere. So to know that he was killed just hours after his abduction is heartbreaking. And I too wonder what he thought in his last hours, minutes and how scared he was.
There were several abductions of 10-12 yr old boys in the area in that year. Police didn't link them together because they had different methods. And although they had Heinrich on their short list from the beginning, there was not enough to arrest and charge him. There were several local bloggers and blogging crime writers who started investigating this case as a cold case in 2010. They peaked the local media's interest and that peaked the Stearns County Sheriff's Office to assign it to new investigators who would pull it apart piece by piece. Those bloggers really deserve a good deal of credit for starting the movement again.

I'm from MN too. I was 17 when Jacob was taken. I remember babysitting and not letting the kids out of my sight. I remember my own mother interrogating us where we'd be and when we'd get there, etc.
In my eyes, death is too good for that monster.
May God surround the Wetterling's and Jared Scheierl(the boy who was kidnapped and molested by the same monster, but was let go)with love and strength. And may Jacob rest in peace.
