This. I did full time night shift for 10 years and for me this is what worked best. I'd finish work and go and do all my normal things, shopping, appointments, then cleaning or cooking when I got home etc. Then I'd go to bed at about midday and get up at 7.30 pm and have breakfast and go to work. I treated it exactly like any other work routine...but at the opposite end of the day. I can understand why some people who have children would go straight to bed and then get up and spend the late afternoon/evening with them...but if that's not a consideration, then I think the other way works much better.

My BFF's husband works 6PM to 6AM, four days on, four off rotation. He has about a 45 minute commute. Their bedroom has the "Black Out" window...he covered a board with fabric and it fits tightly into the window. She just keeps the curtains closed over it. He sleeps with a noise machine AND a fan. He actually goes straight to bed when he gets home and sleeps until about 2 PM. As they don't have kids and she doesn't work, I don't understand why they don't stick with that schedule during his off days too, but he tends to get up earlier on his first day off (basically a four hour nap) and then go to bed at a "normal" sleep time of about 10 or 11 PM...I couldn't do that! My friend has never slept well, so her schedule is all over the place too.
And I thought it was bad leaving for the office at 5:45 each morning! At least I get home at about 4:15 each afternoon and am able to have a normal life! You night workers are brave!

My DH works nights, 5p-5a. When he gets home he relaxes, plays on the computer, watches tv, until ds and I get up. He hangs out with us until we leave and is in bed around 7-8. He sleeps until 1-2, then gets up and eats, showed, etc before he has to go back in. On weekends he goes straight to bed when he gets home but gets up earlier to see us.

I come home, make sure I eat something with protein or I wake up too soon hungry. I try to be asleep within an hour of getting home. I never sleep more than 4 hours. I wish I could but I just wake up and that is that. I get up and do stuff and end up going back to work without sleeping anymore. I use a fan and a white noise machine, I have black out curtains so my bedroom is really dark and I do not keep a phone on the same floor I am sleeping on. If I could sleep 8 hours when I got home I think that would be the best, I just wake up way sooner than that.

He leaves for work at 9:30 pm. He gets home at 6:50 am. He wakes me up, has a cup of coffee, feeds the dogs and then sits down to unwind for a bit (10-20 minutes). Then he goes to bed and sleeps until 1:00 - 2:00. Then he gets up and starts his day. He has two days off in a row so that is nice. But that means he doesn't like getting his full sleep on that first day off (Thursday). So on Thursdays he comes home, does his usual stuff and then sits in his recliner to watch his show. He always falls asleep and naps for 2-3 hours. Then he gets up and does his stuff. Thursdays are his grumpy day since he doesn't want to sleep on his day off but he needs to. ^^^ pretty much what I did when I did nights . I'd start at 10pm and work until 7am, got home around 7:45am. Sleep until about 2 or so, then get on with the day. My day/s off (not always 2 in a row), I didn't sleep at all most of the time. I wanted to make the whole day last. I'd be in bed by 8 or 9pm though.
