Good morning I went out to dinner last night with a friend, but fared pretty well using all the tricks we know and love: dressing on the side, grilled chicken on the side, no bread. It wasn't the healthy and trim salad I'd make at home, but it was so good!
I was also able to walk 2 miles last night. I bought new shoes, my first pair of Asics, and I really like them. So much more support than the shoes I was using.
My weekend plans will include lunch prep for next week and some more walking. I'm really trying to focus on what I can do TODAY, because I get overwhelmed if I think too much about the pounds I want to shed.
I hope this is good weekend for everyone.

Not sure what our plans are--just church early Sunday. I think hubby wants to go out to dinner tonight but I do not feel like it as I have already been eating bad. This would just make it all worse. We will see if I give in or not. LOL! My Maytag Bravos broke yesterday. Spent 4 hours trying to do a load of laundry. It's just 3 1/2 yeas old. So, repairman will be here at lunchtime today. Hopefully it can be fixed. Hubby said just buy a new one but I don't want a new one. I love my set. Oh well. Dinners this weekend will be whatever hubby grills. He loves to grill on the weekends. And because the kids are not here, he will even grill something different for me and do whatever for himself. What a man. He usually goes for the fish or steak, and I usually go for the chicken or pork chops. Have a great day and weekend everyone!

Hi girls! I've been chugging along. I've logged in to MFP for about 25 days now. That is a record for me!!
I'm staying under my calories, but I am getting a bit bored of the foods I am eating so I'm going to have to change something up. I've also walked everyday this week - 1.5-2 miles. I took today off though since my tummy is upset and need to stay close to home. I'll try to get on the treadmill later if there is time.
I'm not sure what our weekend plans are besides church on Sunday. I hope for a relaxing weekend. We've been busy or out of town the last few weeks so I'm content just staying home. I hope to meal prep a bit Sunday afternoon.

I went to barre class this morning before work and that makes 5 days in a row. Went to dr. a few days ago and have to say that while I have kept off some of the weight I lost with Whole 30 in the past year, I have put a little of it back on and that was discouraging @patter -- sorry about your laundry/machine situation -- hope it gets fixed quickly! newlywoods03 -- way to go!! I relate on the "bored with your foods" situation. I think that's part of my problem lately.

I need to make a menu and shopping list - Friday evenings is grocery time for us. It should be 'fun' - I have one day of clear liquids only (Wed) and one day of liquids only (Tues) next week so need to plan around that. Weekend plans - yard sale tomorrow of MILs stuff - working with my SIL - wish me luck...I'm not a yard sale person. DD9's school has their Fall Festival from 3-7 so we'll probably do that also. Sunday is CCD for DD9 and Church for me and the girls @patter - hope the machine is an easy fix newlywoods03 - I hear you on bored...me too FLA SummerBaby - good job on the barre class. (((Hugs))) about the weight

Hi y'all!
I did my boot camp workout this morning. It's HIIT week and it was hard for me, but good for my body.
I have a whole list of errands today and meeting an old work colleague for lunch, so I'm looking forward to a productive day.
Have a wonderful weekend!

I am down 2 pounds that I have been fighting for the last couple of weeks. BFF and I ate a lot of cannolis and they were good. I paid for it. But the weight is now gone.
Today is just an awful day. I am in tears every 5 minutes. Like now again. I need my sister and my mother. At least the dogs would have made me feel better with cuddles. They are gone, too. I have to have hope tomorrow will be a better day.

Hello all! My doctors appointment this morning went great -- I've managed to stay the same weight as the last time I was there and he's cleared me for anything and everything I want to do!! Still getting back into the swing of things but maintaining weight during a very stressful time is a huge WIN for me!! I've been trying to be kind to myself during "slip ups" and by-golly, that is a heck of a lot more fun than beating myself up over every little thing (cookie). I'm doing lots of positive sel-talk and redirecting any negative thoughts into positive ones. It almost sounds hokey but it is a real challenge but very revealing. I would never, ever, ever speak to anyone the way I "talk" to myself.

I'm trying to figure out what my "plan" is. Does anyone have recommendations between counting calories or macros and doing weight watchers? In my mind I want to be gluten, dairy and sugar free but in reality that hasn't happened yet. Last fall I did 5:2 and lost about 14 lbs, which is the most I have lost in a long time. I am a notoriously slow loser. Since Christmas, I have struggled to be as strict with 5:2 again and was counting calories but maintained, not lost.
I'm short (not even 5'0") so my daily calorie allowance is not a lot. I think that is why 5:2 helped--it gave me more of a calorie deficit than I could do on a regular basis and feel like I was living life. So, I know I need to incorporate that again. I just don't know what my other "plans" should be, if that makes sense.
Patter--good luck with your washer. Ours is about 8 years old and is on its last leg. I get an error message on almost every load (unbalanced). I really don't want to buy a new one right now. Ugh.
I was supposed to work late tonight but my clients cancelled so I'm home early. I'm going to get some cleaning done and make my meal plan for the week. I really want to do a lot of meal prep this weekend. We have a football game in the morning tomorrow and then two baseball games Sunday. So, it is another busy weekend. But I really need a plan. We might also need to go shopping, since my older two have very few pairs of pants and fall is here.
I better get to work! Let me know your thoughts/experiences with the new WW program vs counting calories or macros. Thanks!

Well, not only was I exhausted after yesterday's work out, I ended up constantly hungry too! Granted I am coming off steroids, so that may have had an influence too. I think it may have been too much. I had to stop a few times because I was either winded, nauseous or dizzy. So, I decided to not go again today. Taking it easy today. Working 24 hours on Saturday, so Sunday will likely be a day of rest as well. My plan for the coming week is to go at least 3 times- Monday, Wed and Sat. Will add in Thursday if I am up to it. Not a huge fan of diets in general because they tend not to be realistic for life. I totally hear you on the calorie issue. I am 5 feet. Weight loss is much slower for us no matter what I think as a result. I would go with either counting calories or WW. I think they are the most realistic for the long term. I don't know anything about the new plan though.

fish -- how long did it take you to lose the 55 lbs. doing a "Primal" diet? One of the hard things for me with Whole 30 was no dairy, so Primal sounds appealing....

Hi, everyone! Do you mind if I join you? I joined WW this morning - for the first time ever, much to the surprise of all the workers in the shop I went to. I think the bonus will be that I don't know the older plans, so won't be comparing them in my head. When I had my thyroid ablated 5 years ago, I gained 45 pounds. Granted, my Graves Disease made me unhealthily underweight. So I needed at least 15 of that, but the rest is unwanted. Being realistic, however, now that menopause is here, my goal is to lose 20 pounds. I'm 5'8", but with a small frame and the extra weight looks awful. I needed support to get this weight off - synthroid and age is making it impossible to do it on my own. Hence my first WW meeting this morning. As some of you know, I love to cook; so, the hardest part for me will being able to calculate points for the variety of dishes I make. Having to enter all the ingredients into a calculator program and figure out a portion size, etc., will take some of the joy out of it for me.

I'm diabetic so I'm a carb-counter -I try to avoid white carbs altogether (no rice/bread/pasta/rolls/cereal) and limit the others. High-protein, lots of vegetables, not so much fruit

Thanks for sharing your experiences and thoughts fish and melissa. I do think that overall a primal or paleo approach is healthiest if you can stick to it for the most part. Prior to falling off the wagon a few months ago, I had changed my goals on mfp to reflect the macros outlined in the primal blueprint. I wasn't consistent enough with it to know if it would work for me, though. That's probably where I will start and see how it goes.

I agree. Probably a combination approach is best. For ex, you can't just count calories. You still need to have the right balance of macros within those calories. Decreased dependence on processed foods in general is also important for the long haul.
My dd was saying the other day that she eats "raw" M-F and then lets go on the weekend. I pointed out that she really isn't eating raw. She is just eating no processed foods! LOL. Kids. She's 19, dances 40 hours each week and does about another 30-40 minutes most days of HIIT for cross training purposes. She cooks for herself during the week and does go out to eat probably for 2-3 meals on the weekend, when she may or may not eat healthy or encounter processed foods. I think she has a great basic philosophy. Eat right most of the time and a few little not so healthy meals or snacks are not going to be damaging.. but few means few, not daily!

Well, not only was I exhausted after yesterday's work out, I ended up constantly hungry too! Granted I am coming off steroids, so that may have had an influence too. If I have a week where I work out a lot, I eat and eat and eat. Nothing seems to fill me up. A big bowl of spaghetti and meat sauce is what it would take to satiate me. (I don't do that of course but it is what I want). I have been making miso soup for DS for breakfast every day. I make it the night before and then he reheats it. It is helping to fill me up. First you have to like miso and tofu. I am so conditioned to eating it that it is second nature to me. I really like the flavour and the tofu and miso soup really curb hunger. I had forgotten how much I like to eat it, too. Tonight we are having shabu shabu for dinner. It is a hot pot of beef stock soup, beef, tofu, Chinese cabbage, and udon noodles with a sesame sauce to dip in. Normally it is eaten with rice, but I don't eat rice so it's just the food. It's a family favourite and very filling if you eat enough tofu, cabbage and meat. If you eat kosher you can get your butcher to freeze a beef roast and sliver slice it while frozen and use it like that. It is about a .5 on the difficulty to make for dinner scale. Japanese food stores will carry shabu shabu beef, too. It is paper thin and delicious.

I hear people talk about eating "clean" or "paleo" or whatever their prescribed eating plan is 80% of the time, but never really know what that means. Does that mean 80% of their meals are paleo? 80% of the calories come from paleo foods? 8/10 days they eat clean? I agree that taking processed foods out of the equation is a must. We do pretty well with that if I have things planned out. If not, that is when we fall off the healthy foods wagon.

Delta Dawn I have been hearing good things about miso soup. I bought some miso ginger broth at trader joes awhile back but don't know what exactly to do with it. Lol. Any suggestions? I have never, ever had ginger in miso. I would try heating it up and adding a block of tofu to it. Cut the tofu into small cubes. It's hard to imagine, but coming from Trader Joe's I would assume it's good right? TJ's is a great store with awesome food. If you like miso buy some paste and I will walk you through making miso soup. It is so filling and incredibly good! I am making it for breakfast for us from now on. I was so full this afternoon until I'd say 1 or 2 pm when I needed to eat again. My GP friend told me the estrogen in the tofu is good for me, too, so that's a plus right there. There are lots of ways to eat soy and tofu is a personal favourite. I use 2 types of tofu in my soup. One is called atsuage and it is a deep fried tofu (it's not bad because it's not breaded) and it has a neat taste. I also buy a block of plain medium firm tofu and garnish it with wakame which is seaweed. I made it last night and didn't put enough in it for my liking. I thought I did lots but it wasn't enough. Try your miso soup and see if you like it. You can add all sorts of cool stuff to it.

I wanted to try to make something similar at home and was going to add broccoli, carrots, etc. I personally avoid soy because of the effects it can have on hormones, so probably won't add tofu. This is what the box looks like. It also says you can use in place of water when making rice.

I've also heard that actual miso is good for you if it is fermented. I doubt mine has those benefits, though.

I use mfp to calculate the calories in recipes. Often times the recipe will give the number of servings but not how big the serving is. Does anyone have a quick way to figure that out, especially for things like soup?

I looked on Pinterest and found this recipe using the miso broth. I think it will be a great meal For a fasting day (500 calories or less).

iamkristinl16, I don't believe in "diets" so to speak but I do record my food in Weight Watchers. With that said, I eat what I want and my normal foods I have eaten for years. I just really like their tracking tools and how I have it linked to my FitBit. I am 5 feet even and 51. Losing weight is so slow but it comes but I also don't need much food at this age. It's all about portion size for sure! And while I have hovered around the same weight for about a month, everyone things I have gotten a lot thinner. I attribute that to my walk/jogs every.single.day. It has really helped me feel SO much better. And welcome elaine.

Hey girls! Just plugging along here. Working with one of my coaches on nutrition to make sure I'm doing the right things (which I mostly am) and adjusting a few others. Working out consistently but still scaling for my wrist injury. I go for an MRI next week and follow up with my ortho the week after that. Hopefully I get some answers! The whole calorie deficit thing--does nothing for me. I am very much in the camp of quality vs quantity. I do not believe that a calorie is just a calorie. I can't wrap my head around how 200 calories of a Snickers bar is somehow equal to 200 calories of chicken. Quality of nutrition has always given me more results. Thanks for resuming the thread tuesdaysgone, I hope my schedule will ease up a bit so I can come back more often!

The reason why I joined WW for the first time in my life is that they have embraced this philosophy too. I am moving farther and farther away from eating a lot of processed food, and I don't want to deny myself too much of the real good stuff like lean protein, eggs, etc.

littlefish and @patter I totally agree that a calorie isn't just a calorie. However, I also don't know that I trust that calories don't mean anything, if that makes sense. I also know that the changes I make need to be long term. Getting to where those changes are habit and not having such strong sugar cravings are the hardest part.

I fall into the camp of carb-watching-- but also 100% agree with quality of nutrition. If I eat a white carb with sugar-- I crave white carbs and sugar for days-- and giving into the cravings just makes the cravings last longer. But if I eat a 100% whole wheat piece of toast with avocado, I am fine. It is that quick carb/sugar rush that doesn't agree with me. And I think everyone is different. I've been dieting pretty much my whole adult life but never went sugar free till Whole 30 early this summer. It really helped me understand that the sugar dragon isn't just fighting with me physically but also with my brain. And knowing how much better I felt without sugar has helped me tremendously in saying no to sweet treats without the component of sadness and feeling deprived. I don't eat onion rings anymore because they give me horrible heartburn -- and I never really felt deprived about that and now I feel that way with sweets-- and if I don't say no, often a tiny bite is satisfying and doesn't start me on the circle of sugar desire, lol.

iamkristinl16 I get it. Calories are definitely a factor but not the only factor, and a lot of times I think that's where women get stuck--is in the calories, and not the bigger picture of overall nutrients.

iamkristinl16 I get it. Calories are definitely a factor but not the only factor, and a lot of times I think that's where women get stuck--is in the calories, and not the bigger picture of overall nutrients. Yes, I also know I can't eat carbs anymore. I get way too much inflammation with carbs. I don't feel well when I eat carbs. I have them on a rare occassion but we used to have pasta multiple times a week. Now it's maybe once a month. Sugar too, I can it have but not in excess. I don't feel well, my heart races, etc. So, while all of those things have calories, I have to eat the calories that are best for me--good fats, fruits, veggies, white meat, etc. I also know the exercise makes me feel SO much better. I didn't used to feel that way years ago even when I was a certified instructor. Weird how that has changed for the better now, and I feel like I finally do get that "high."
