Public restroom changing station...

I've seen them in both as well, probably more often out in the open.

If there is a handicapped stall, the changing station is usually in it. If there isn't a handicapped stall, the changing station is usually out in the open.

I've never ever seen one in a handicapped stall. There is usually a "family" restroom with a changing station, or they are out in the main part of the restroom.

I have seen both. Typically it's older businesses with bathrooms that were built before changing tables were common that pull the in the handicapped trick.


I have seen other configurations in small bathrooms that are just as lousy. One local grocery store that I love, has theirs directly across from the handicapped stall. But the area there is only wide enough to open that door. So if someone is in the stall, they hit you with the door coming back out. And if someone needs to get into the stall, you have to move for them mid-change.


And our Target has a family rest room (Yay!) withOUT a changing table. Say what? So when DS [HASH]2 was in diapers, DS [HASH]1 was 8 years old. Old enough to not want to hang out in the ladies' room while I changed a diaper. But young enough that I didn't think leaving him to hang out in the main store alone was a good option either. And they had that family room, which could have fixed my issue, with no place but the floor to change a baby. I don't get it.


Of course, it's all better than the days when you had to haul your kid back outside and change him on the seat of the car, so I am grateful that they exist in whatever crazy corner they cram them into. (Oh, and I'm also happy to sy that in the years between our first and second son, nearly everywhere wised up and put the changing tables in the mens' rooms, too. I never understood why only the ladies' rooms had them. DH spent many a time changing diapers in the car due to the lack of a changing table when he was out with DS on his own.


On the other hand, the local Macy's gets a gold star, because for over 15 years now they have had a special room just for changing a baby. No need to go into a restroom at all.

I've seen both too. And I'm grateful I don't have to actually use them anymore.

I've seen both, but I cringe when I see them in the handicap stall. I have several friends in wheelchairs and I know from their POV that this is a real issue for them. When you go use a restroom (if you are not disabled) even if there is a long line you usually have a variety of options for the toilet. But there is usually one stall that is wheelchair accessible. So if mom's are in line using it (which is fair if you have to change a baby, and that's where it is located what can you do?), then your wait is extra long and you have no other choice. That sucks. And it really can cause issues.

I have decided that if the able bodied people who come up with accessibility rules actually had to sit their but in a wheelchair and figure out how to maneuver around their grand designs they would rethink a good number of them.

Me too ... I'm just thankful that I'm waaaaay past that stage

I prefer them in the handicap one also.

That one is hard to vote. It's usually a bit of both, depending on the size of the restroom.
A small restroom will have it in the handicap stall.
A large restroom will have it in the open.

I've seen them in both places depending on the store.

I prefer the set-up in one of the malls near here - there's a nursing area with chairs and changing areas; there's a family restroom (also with a changing area) and then the main restrooms with multiple stalls (and more than one handicapped stall - at least in the women's - I haven't been in the men's ) and the stalls have those little strap-in seats so mum's can pee without juggling a baby. I'm pretty sure there's a changing area in there also - I think it's in the open but out of the way of the main traffic pattern by the sinks.
