I have never had a laundry room by the bedrooms. Right now mine is in the basement and although I don't like the steps, I do like having the quiet and the space. If you have your laundry room next to bedrooms, do you think it is too noisy? Sometimes I throw in a load before I go to bed. I think I really would like a laundry room which had a door connecting to my huge walk in closet in a master bedroom!

It makes sense. 99% of my laundry is clothing! towels or sheets. Kitchen towels are the only other wash I do regularly that would need to come downstairs. I've had it upstairs in other house and really like it.
Or laundry is on the main level next to the kitchen. I would love to remodel the sitting room off the master and make it into a laundry room. We don't really use the room as it is now. But that would take a 3,000+ sq foot house and turn it into a 3 bedroom house, which wouldn't be good for resale. So I make others carry the laundry up and down the stairs.

I like to deal with laundry in between doing other household chores, most of which are on the main floor, so for me, the main floor laundry is the best. Plus, I'm a big baby about worrying over water damage. The upstairs bathrooms give me enough to fret over without throwing a washing machine up there, too.

I have a ranch style house, so having it on my main livin level would also put it near my bedrooms and I would love it. Right now it's in my basement. Aside from hauling loads up & down the stairs, I can never hear the dryer beep and I'm always forgetting I have clothes in there.

Most Australians hang clothes out on the clothesline, so having a laundry upstairs (in a 2-storey house) would not be practical. I remember even in Montreal my mother used to hang out the washing on the line in summer. I think it's inbuilt for us.

My laundry room is on the second floor with all the bedrooms. It's my favorite thing. I love not having to run laundry up and down the stairs. I will say that my laundry room is not backed or next to any bedrooms. It backs my master bath only so I never notice any noise when I throw a load in before bed. There is some noise in my bathroom that I know is there during the day but, I can sleep through anything so it's no biggie.

I'd rather have the laundry near the space where most of the laundry is kept, then having to schelp it down the stairs to the other side of the house where the machines are. Well that and it's kind of creepy in the basement.

Our house is all one floor and the laundry room shares part of a wall with the master bedroom.
I actually LOVE the sound of my washing machine and dryer.
It's the best ambient noise ever to me.

My girlfriend, who is a mother of two children, had a laundry room on the upstairs, bedroom level of their previous home. She liked it, but did mention she couldn't throw a load in late at night because of the noise factor.
As previously stated by melanell, I do my laundry while tackling other household chores and wouldn't want to keep going up and down the stairs.
Our laundry room is on our first floor, but in its own room with a door that I close if my husband is sleeping. I love having it there.
Think about when you do laundry and what would work best for you and your family.
Good luck!

Ours is upstairs, as are our bedrooms. I like it - I don't notice the noise when I'm sleeping - it's a background

In this house it's upstairs and I like it. But for years it was downstairs. The best thing was in one house we had a laundry chute from second floor hall bath to laundry room. It was great !

Laundry on the floor with the bedrooms makes a lot of sense, no carting laundry up and down the stairs. Upstairs is where almost all of my laundry comes from. But then like someone else said, I do laundry during the day, in between chores. If I had to run up and down the stairs all day it would get a little old. Although my butt could use it . I think the only good solution for me would be to own a one story house!

I really love having the laundry upstairs. I don't feel like it's too noisy but maybe because I'm used to the sound? When our washer spins it makes a very odd sound that my mom always notices...I never hear it. Also, with the doors closed it dampens the noise significantly.

When we lived in Savannah, our laundry room was upstairs with the bedrooms. It was not noisy, but during the day I spent most of my time downstairs. It was a pain to try to run up and down the steps to put clothes in the washer, move them to the dryer, get them out and fold them. It was hard to hear the timer (really impossible if I shut the laundry room door) and I would have some dry runs up and down just to check. In the last place we lived, there were three floors and we spent most of the daytime in the family room in the basement. The laundry room was on the main floor, right off the door to the basement stairs. I would do laundry while cleaning, fold them on the breakfast room table and just take them up as I made trips up to the top floor, or once they were all folded. That was much, much better. Now our bedrooms are on the main floor and all is good, unless I am in my scrap room upstairs and then I can't hear the signal. In my opinion and from my experience, I have found that having the laundry room on the main floor, no matter where the bedrooms are located, it the best choice for me.

Growing up we first had laundry in the basement of a bungalow. Then we had it on the second floor. It was closest to my bedroom and it didn't bother me if my mom put washing in when i was in my room. I used it like white noise when I was studying. The TV room was below my bedroom and that bothered me more. My mom loves having the laundry upstairs with her, especially since she's now in her 70s. She's been in this house over 23 years.
We have our laundry on the main with a laundry shoot from the master closet right to the laundry room. I love it. I can wash and fold there and just walk up the clean clothes. The washers and dryers nowadays are also so much quieter. We can have our washer on, our dishwasher on, and hear nothing when sitting in our family room watching tv.

I always thought it would be nice to have the laundry anywhere other than the basement, but that's where ours has always been (24.5 years at this point). Then I started watching "Holmes on Holmes" with Mike Holmes. He really got me thinking about whether it was a good idea to have a laundry setup on a 2nd floor where bedrooms are generally located in a multi-story home. He said he had seen so much damage as a direct result of this popular idea that he is adamant that it's a really bad idea. And if possible, he moves it when he's redoing a home.
With this in mind, if I were to ever move ours...it would be on the first floor only.

We remodeled our master closet and included a washer & dryer up there. It backs to the master bathroom not the bedroom but I never do laundry at night so it wouldn't bother us. I also have an office off the master bedroom so I do laundry when I'm working.
We put a small apartment washer with a dryer over it in the old laundry room on the first floor which is now more of a mudroom. A small load in that is perfect for the kitchen towels and the occasional tablecloth.
ETA: The washer in the closet sits in a pan with a drain into the sewer line so if it ever leaks, heaven forbid, hopefully there won't be any damage. DH was adamant about that.

My laundry room is right next door to my bedroom. I often throw a load in before bed too. I personally don't find it too noisy, maybe over the years I have just learned to tune it out. The convenience is great!

That would be my husband's number one reason for not having laundry on the top floor. He always likes to have as little water as possible up there!

It makes sense not having to lug stuff up and down to bedrooms but I tend to do laundry on and off throughout the day so I don't think it would work for me having to go upstairs for each stage.

My DD has a laundry room in her huge master bedroom closet. It's my favorite thing about her house. For years I had a laundry room in the basement and had to go down 2 flights of stairs to get to it. Then we moved into a condo with a laundry room on the main floor and I loved it. My house now is all on one level so my laundry room is on the main floor. It shares a wall with the guest bedroom closet. I love that I don't have to run stairs to get my laundry done and the noise doesn't bother me at all.

I have never had the laundry in any place other than the basement. While I think it would be handy to have laundry near the bedrooms, I have had too many instances where my washing machine has leaked or needed to be emptied manually due to quitting working right during a load. I would want my laundry someplace where I wouldn't worry so much about water damage.

Mine is in the basement of this 1960 era rancher. I would prefer it on the main floor not the upstairs I used to hang my clothes outside until dh cut down my line bc it was an eyesore as 'no one hangs their clothes outside anymore. '

In our current house, the laundry room is upstairs.
In the past it has always been on the first floor.
I LOVE having the laundry room upstairs.
It makes so much more sense to me.
No more hauling everything down and up all day.
I close the door and it is not too loud.
When I am downstairs I can hardly hear if if is still running or not.
I have shut off the "ding" as it is so annoying !!!

Ours is upstairs with our bedrooms and I love it. We tend to have piles of clean, unfolded or folded laundry that sit around for days, and this way they sit in the upstairs TV room (adjacent to the laundry room) and not in the main living area downstairs.

I've had laundry off the kitchen on the main floor (VA) and two different homes in GA that had the laundry upstairs with the bedrooms.
I prefer having the laundry upstairs.

We have a ranch and mine is in the the side entrance. It's just steps from the kitchen and bedrooms. Works great. We have a small place about 1400 sf.
DH put in a drain and the washer sits in a pan. He watches Mike Holmes too and tried to follow his lead. I love our improvements and enjoy his excitement (and sweet face) when he starts another project.

We had 2nd floor laundry and bathroom and had the bathroom pipes leak once when we weren't home. It was an absolute disaster. But we didn't get rid of the bathroom. I think laundry should be nearest to where the majority of laundry comes from, which for most people, are the bedrooms. And in most two story houses, that's the 2nd floor.
