didn't open the link but good them! I hope more stores stay closed. there is enough of a shopping crush on Friday and the days before that we don't need to be open on the one day we traditionally get together.

I think it is sad this is a "bold" statement.
The first year Old Navy decided to stay open on Thanksgiving I had to work. The Gap and the movie theater were the only other places in the mall that stayed open, it ended up being one of the worst sales days for us. I ended up getting sent home in time for Thanksgiving dinner. But it was still a bummer to have to be at the mall at all that day. Now I work for a company that mainly sells online so we close Thanksgiving Day.

Good for them!!! And they have 13,000 EMPLOYEES?? (the Mall itself..not the store employees)...WOW...I never been there, but that is a TON of employees for a mall! lol
Where do ALL these employees park? LOL

Good. I think being open for "amazing sales!" On Thanksgiving is ridiculous. I see no reason why most places can't wait until Friday (I'm looking at you, Toys r us and Macy's, etc).

It was great, we both got 2 1/2 pay and got to spend most of the day with our families. We always offered to work since we were in the military and didn't have family close by. We were only closed on Christmas day.

I totally agree. Not all of the people who work in retail places have the option of not working if their employer decides to be open that day, and I doubt very much any of those stores make any more money overall by being open. It just spreads out the sales they do make over more days which equals higher labor costs.

I LOVE shopping on Thanksgiving.
We've been doing it every year since I was little.
It's not a new thing.

Oh God, that time of year again.
For the record, my opinion is that if it is something that YOU want to do - - - watching football, flying to see family, going to the movies - then you consider those service essential. If it's not something you want to do, then you (global you) say that all nonessential workers should have that day off. But your definition of "nonessential" varies greatly on your wants (not needs) for that holiday.
Of course things like medical care, public safety, etc. are essential, but when it boils down to it, media isn't essential. Flying isn't essential. Grocery stores aren't essential. Convenient yes, but not essential.

Kmart, Walmart, and others were always open Thanksgiving Day. There were different sales on actual Thanksgiving Day than on Black Friday. It's why I get so annoyed when these threads come up. Shopping on actual Thanksgiving Day is NOT a new thing. It's just something people have decided to get newly outraged about.

I don't care one way or another but I will say I'm a avid Thanksgiving Day shopper (oh the horror!). I've always had jobs where sometimes I was off and sometimes I wasn't but DH is a cop and is always working the holidays so I get lonely during the holiday and it's nice to get out and do something...be around others.
Everyone I know who works retail loves working the holiday because it's extra money hourly.

I LOVE shopping on Thanksgiving. We've been doing it every year since I was little. It's not a new thing. I think it's selfish of the shoppers and of the store executives who make people work a non-essential job on a holiday such as Thanksgiving. It's just greedy with no thought of how it affects others.

I think it's ridiculous to be open on Thanksgiving. It's a national holiday, not specific to any religion. I love to see it as a time for families.

Do you think that of the thousands of people who have to work football games and parades, too? Where's the protests for that?

I still recall the year when I was a teen (so this is early 1990s, like 91-94 ish) that my mom forgot to buy a turkey oven bag and we went out searching for one. NOTHING was open other than gas stations, and they don't happen to carry turkey oven bags (we checked). I guarantee there was no KMart or WalMart open or any grocery stores because we would have gone there. So there would have been no shopping on Thanksgiving Day then. I lived in Salt Lake City, maybe a bigger city was a different story. Save

Football games and parades seem more like celebrations and community events.
Shopping is just ...shopping.

Football games and parades seem more like celebrations and community events. Shopping is just ...shopping. For attendees, but not for the people who are doing all the work. Not to mention the thousands of people that it takes behind the scene to broadcast something on the radio or television. It's hardly a celebration for them. It's their every day - non-essential - job.

Football games and parades seem more like celebrations and community events. Shopping is just ...shopping. If your argument is "non essential workers shouldn't have to work in thanksgiving", then that argument applies to football games, parades, travel, movies, Disney World, etc. If you participate in or don't mind any of those things on thanksgiving, then you need to rethink your argument.

But what if the thing your family enjoys doing together is shopping? That's how it was in my family. Me, my mom, my grandma, my great-grandma, and my sister. It's what we did together on Thanksgkving.

I don't know that this is "bold." There will be a line of shoppers looking for the best deal whenever they open, provided they advertise good deals or promotions starting at that time. It is to the consumers' advantage if stores open at many different times so that they can take advantage of hot deals at multiple locations.

I definitely don't travel on Thanksgiving day and I can't remember the last time I saw the parade on TV because I usually sleep too late or I'm helping prepare the meal. SaveSave

I'm fine with stores closing on Thanksgiving. A lot of workers may get to enjoy their first Thanksgiving with family since they were kids.

Last year was the first that I shopped on Thanksgiving.
I have been shopping with DD on Black Friday every year since she was a baby (she's 22 now). We have always gotten up very early, made a day of it and had a great time (well maybe not during her middle school days but she outgrew that lol).
So last year we went out about 6 pm, went to Ulta and it was almost empty. Went to the mall next door and it also was. We we pretty let down.
We went out early Friday morning to another mall and it was not nearly as crazy as it was on prior Black Fridays. It did pick up a lot after lunch.
So I would rather the stores stay closed on Thanksgiving and and have Black Friday remain the "big" shopping day.

I LOVE shopping on Thanksgiving. We've been doing it every year since I was little. It's not a new thing. I remember shopping at KMart on Thanksgiving in the 80's. I would make sure I stopped by on the way to my parents house every year. I also always stop at a coffee stand on the way out of town Thanksgiving day. I think the new thing is to be outraged for others.
