Yes I know we've had the shoe conversation before but I'm not sure if we had it specially for large feet. I wear a size 11 wide and I have plantar fasciitis (not actively hurting at the moment but I assume it's always there lurking) and I have a small bunion (not bad but at the end of the day that part of one foot definitely hurts).
I'm subbing today (no I'm not posting from class, it's lunchtime) and my feet are aching. I'm wearing good shoes (Merrill) but they're old now and need to be replaced. What can you all suggest? They need to be comfortable for teaching and for walking miles at the hospital when I'm on call. I hate shopping but I guess I'll do it if I have some good suggestions. Otherwise I might order from zappos since I can return them.
Ugh on problem feet.

I recommend the Barking Dogs blog -- lot of good information about shoes for all kinds of issues.

I wear a size 12 medium in most shoes, sometimes an 11, depending on the brand and style. I've also had plantar fasciitis.
I have a ton of shoes, some that I only wear once in a while. I wear a lot of Clarks, and some Skechers, and Sperry. I have worn my SAS pair a ton in the last six months or so.
I do find that the least comfortable are shoes with not enough arch support or ones that are very flat with a super thin sole. A small supported heel is the most comfortable.

I love my Dansko clogs. Seriously the most comfortable shoe I've ever owned. I actually have to wear men's because My feet are so big & wide.

I like Clarks. I shop at footsmart.com and maryland square.com. They both have good selections of wide shoes in all styles from atheletics to dress shoes.

Another vote for Danskos. They keep my PF from flaring up.

Some great links were posted here, never heard of footsmart or barkingdogshoes. I found this quote on the latter site and I already use both of these products and highly recommend them: These are my at home shoes - spenco. They were sized small so I went up one size. If you look closely on the pictures, there a tiny bump on the insole of the shoe, that healed some ball of the foot pain I had for months. I'm going to check out the recommended slippers the site offers for the wintertime. My podiatrist also recommend I use these Yoga Toes. This is great advice as well that I follow:

My feet are wide and my big toes turn in, causing bunions. I also have plantar fasciitis. The only shoe I have found that I can wear without pain are Birkenstocks. I get the soft bed clogs and sandals, so no painful breaking in period. I work 12 hour shifts in a hospital and am on my feet most of the shift. I can go home and not be in incredible pain, except when my plantar fasciitis is flaring up.

I follow the advice above - I wear slip on Clarks as slippers. I come home from work everyday and put on "good" athletic shoes which get replaced about every 6-8 months. Did not know Danskos came in men's styles. Will have to check those out as the women's 12 is too snug.

I keep Asics that I only wear in the house. I wear them if I am going to be on my feet any length of time.
I also like Clarks for work, but I have a desk job.
I find even a little padding helps, like foam inserts.

Of course I own their sandals, 2 pairs in fact, but never looked for clogs. Wearing only Birks and Crocs is what cured my plantar fasciitis. I will go look at Birks, Dansko, and the others that you all recommended. I actually almost wore my Crocs today but then I didn't. lol. I can't wear them to the hospital because of the holes but the school where I sub doesn't have any rules about shoes (at least not going by what I see teachers wearing). But I decided that maybe they were too... I don't know, too "Croc-y" or something. lol. It's so hot here today that I might have worn my Birk sandals except that I'd need to put polish on my toes and that was certainly too much trouble first thing in the morning. Okay, off to check those recommendations. Please add more if you have them.

If you are looking for athletic shoes and have a decent budget, I listened to a podcast about these yesterday - ALTRA Running Shoes

Merrells were my go for years, but I can't find wide width in any shoes or boots I like. I have had good luck with Timberland Pro wide width clogs.

I have the best luck with Clarks. I can't wear the Dansko clogs -- the vamp digs into my foot and hurts.

BOCshoes are amazingly comfortable for my Fred Flintstone feet. Merrills give me bunions - not really sure why. I have good luck with Clarks and Dansko, too. One thing I've noticed: my feet get sore the MOMENT my shoes start to get worn at the heel. NYC sidewalks really chew through shoes quickly, so I try to buy shoes on sale - I know they won't last more than a year. I wish I could wear the kind with a leather sole (like penny loafers) and just take them in for new heels every so often, but I need much more cushioning than that.

Yes, this is how I know my shoes are ready to be replaced -- my feet hurt by the time I get home. Back when they were newer I could get home after a long day and my feet would be tired, but it was a normal tired just like my body was tired. But they didn't have that horrible ache. I'll look at the BOCs also, thanks.

Danskos goes up to 13 in womens. I got a case of PF last fall and bought a pair of danskos. Wore them 18 hours a day for months. I can totally tell the difference. When summer came I bought a pair of spenco flip flops. The last time I got PF it took me 2 years to get past the pain. This time it was gone in about 8 months. NO SOFT INSOLES. I sure can tell a difference and my feet really hurt if I wear my old sketchers around the house.

I bought a pair of Asics, then wore them for two consecutive 12 hour shifts with no problems. Although most of the nurses I work with wear the Dansoc.

Okay...so I thought it might be best if I could try them on first but sheesh...none of the stores I checked have my size in stock in the store. ugh. So I went to Zappos and started reading reviews of Dansko and it turns out that the company changed hands and a lot of the recent reviews are more negative. Apparently Sanita is the company that now makes them (it was the original manufacturer, or something). Some of the reviews were saying that they feel the Danskos don't fit as well as they used to. But since Zappos has free returns I ordered a black pair of "professional" clogs from both Dansko and Sanita. I'll try them on and return one or maybe both. Yeah I'm a cynic about shoes and I'm expecting to hate them. But I'm telling you, if I find something I like I'm going to buy another pair in brown, and then I'm getting some new Birkenstocks also. Then I'll be all set for shoes for the next ten years. lol

Merrell or Munro make comfy shoes in larger and wide sizes - both have good support. they are not cheap, but well worth the money. I order mine from Mordstroms

Dansko's always felt like I was wearing a brick. They hurt. I did like Klogs though.
This summer I started wearing Birkenstocks. Oh man! I can not believe the difference it made in how my feet feel. I ordered a pair of the wool clogs to wear this winter. It's like they fixed my feet!

I ordered a pair of the wool clogs to wear this winter. It's like they fixed my feet! Birks and Crocs are what cured my plantar fasciitis. I wore NOTHING but those two things for several months and the pain went away. But the problem is for the moment I have only Birk sandals, and only the regular Croc clogs with the holes. Neither is quite right for winter at a hospital (which prohibits open-toe and open-hole anyway) or a school. I might be able to get away with the Crocs at school because I'm only a sub and I'm an in-demand sub, so I don't think they'd mind. But....I feel like the Dansko/Sanitas will be better. lol

For me Alegria shoes are the most comfortable. For the summer, my Birkenstocks are the best. It end to wear Alegria in the winter.

I'm also an 11-12. I have had PF but it went away wearing the boot at home for 2 weeks. I've never had a flare up and that was 4 years ago. Lots of people recommended Dansko's and others mentioned though. But I have flat feet and anything with an added arch is like walking on a rock all day. But ballet flats/flip flops/Chucks and similar soled shoes are what works for me. Hope you find something comfy.

Ohhh, I KNOW your pain---I wear size 11-12, which are NOT easy to find!! OR, I find some, but they only come in REGULAR width I recently got some CUTE shoes and ordered a size larger, thinking that might make up for the wider width I need, but I couldn't even get my feet into them But after searching ( .....annnnd searchinggg!!) .....I finally found some !!!! Check out "the walking company"----I was able to get my shoes (Dansko) in DOUBLE WIDE !! Very high-quality and only $100.00 & free shipping. I cannot tell you how THRILLED I am !!! My sad, achey feet are SOOO happy!! **P.S....they also included a cute leopard scarf as bonus gift. I assumed it'd be regular scarf material; but it's faux FUR, and very soft and silky!

Crocs. Yes!
Not the ugly neon colored ones though. They have suedes, and wedges, and cute boots. After I dealt with PF a few years back, my Crocs are now my favorites.

I wear a size 10 & love my Alegria's. I've purchased Jamu & Merrill too. (not fond of them). Nothing gives me the support of my Alegria's. I even have purchased the insoles in wide to place into my athletic shoes.
