It forced me to download it yesterday. People msg me all the time on fb so I felt like I needed to go ahead and do it. Oh it SUCKS. Hard to navigate, makes a bing noise if someone msgs me and I can't figure out how to turn it off. Pops up someone's face on my phone and puts it on top of every other app until I close it out. Super annoying. Trying to decide if I can make it without it.

I installed it yesterday. The notification was part of set up - I said no so it doesn't ding or anything at me but every time I go in to the app it tells me to "please turn on notifications" NO! I do not want or need the stupid thing making noise at me!
I might just uninstall and check FB messages on an internet browser.

I refuse to download it. I don't care how seamless it is or how much more convenient it is, I hate when I'm forced to download something I truly don't need. I guess I will only be accessing my messages from my computer from now on.
And frankly, I'm pissed that it is just another app to take up room on my phone. I am not crazy about apps, I have exactly 3 on my phone that aren't the standard issued ones given on the phone.

I hate the sound it makes! I agree with having to add another app to the phone when it's really not needed. I wish someone from Facebook could explain why they had to do this. It worked fine before with just the FB app.

Oh I'm not downloading it. Facebook can just stay in my Facebook app. The last thing I need is another thing beeping at me when someone wants to talk to me. I do not like it when an app tells me I *have* to do something. I don't have to do anything, Facebook! And if it gets to the point where I can no longer read messages through the Facebook app, then I guess I won't see them until I am on my computer. No biggie.

I downloaded it, but deleted it after one day.
It still pinged all night even after me turning off notifications repeatedly.
Then I read a very scary article about the terms of use on HuffPo. I'll see if I can find it.
Between being invasive and annoying as hell it will not be back on my phone.

I don't use FB enough to even bother but my older son is really annoyed with this feature and refuses to install it. He uses FB for so many things and this is just making it a nuisance he said.Very intrusive. He mentioned a few other negatives to it but i am sure those of you familiar with the app are already aware of.

I've been using it for several weeks and quite like it. I'm an admin of a large Facebook group, the swap board once 2peas dissolved, so it's been very helpful chatting in real time and with others who use it. Then I came here and read this thread and the article kelpea linked. Um no. I am not down with that. Just deleted it and will message through my browser on my phone now. Damn as it was very convenient for me too except a little thing called privacy. Sigh, I see this becoming more of the "norm" these days and may have to figure out if I'm on board or not.

I started to install it and then saw how many things it wanted access to on my phone so I said no thank you, I can wait until I'm on a computer to read messages. Then I saw all the articles (or maybe it's just one article that keeps getting reposted that says it's evil.
I don't have google hangouts installed for the same reason. I don't want one entity seeing everything I do on my phone. Plus I'm mad at google for getting rid of the outlook/google calendar sync option earlier this month.

From the HuffPo article: The TOU: Allows the app to change the state of network connectivity Allows the app to call phone numbers without your intervention. This may result in unexpected charges or calls. Malicious apps may cost you money by making calls without your confirmation. Allows the app to send SMS messages. This may result in unexpected charges. Malicious apps may cost you money by sending messages without your confirmation. Allows the app to record audio with microphone. This permission allows the app to record audio at any time without your confirmation. Allows the app to take pictures and videos with the camera. This permission allows the app to use the camera at any time without your confirmation. Allows the app to read you phone's call log, including data about incoming and outgoing calls. This permission allows apps to save your call log data, and malicious apps may share call log data without your knowledge. Allows the app to read data about your contacts stored on your phone, including the frequency with which you've called, emailed, or communicated in other ways with specific individuals. Allows the app to read personal profile information stored on your device, such as your name and contact information. This means the app can identify you and may send your profile information to others. --------------------- Scary. I'm not ok with any of that. Here's a link to the story, but since I'm on my phone it's a link to the mobile site: m.huffpost.com/us/entry/4365645/

So, am I understanding correctly that if you use Facebook on the internet, through a browser, you will still be able to send/receive messages the same old way? You will only need the Messenger app when using the Facebook app?

I hate it, it's very annoying. I don't do a whole lot of messaging on Facebook anyway. I've only had the app installed for about a week and in that time I've received one message. I think I will just delete it and only worry about replying to messages when I'm on my computer.

I refuse to download this app, so I'm glad you can still get to the messages this way - for now, anyway.

The Snopes links debunks most of HuffPo. It's not much different than most apps I already have.
If you have an iPhone, to turn off sounds:
Settings / Notifications / Messenger / turn off sounds

I like it. I find it convenient, and the permissions are only scary and intrusive if you think anyone is going to do anything with all that info. I personally don't care. If I decide to do something really nefarious one of these days, I'll leave my phone at home so it can't incriminate me.

I like it. This summer, DD was in France without an international phone. We used the messenger app to text each other. It worked really well for us. I could text her abroad using my data plan without any international charges by going through the app. Then she could use the app when she had wifi to answer me.
That said,I don't fb message much at all -- and now that DD is home, I probably won't continue.

If you have an iPhone, to turn off sounds: Settings / Notifications / Messenger / turn off sounds It doesn't exactly debunk them, it just says "oh that probably won't happen to you" and it's ok because everybody does it. Not the same.

I had downloaded it but deleted it when I read an article about Messenger for iPhone. It sounded extremely invasive and they were warning people against downloading it.

I hate it. I think its stupid to be forced to download another app for facebook when the facebook app used to let you check messages. I think its dumb. Luckily I don't get many messages there but if I do, I'll just check them on my computer not my phone.

It's OK. The sounds get annoying, so I mute my phone a lot. Those pop-up faces are creepy!

Yeah, it made me upload it today. I love my bff, but I did not need to see her on my phone all day. The only way I could get rid of it was to delete the message. Totally annoying.

I was forced to download it too... So far I'm hating it... I hate having it separate, and I haven't figured out all the settings but I'm hoping it's easy enough to have it so that notifications/messages only come through when I open it... I've also gotten two emails from friends who say that when they tried to message me on fb from their computer they got an error message saying that it wouldn't go through... I told them how I was forced to switch to the app, they sent a message to me through the fb app (they haven't downloaded the messenger app yet), and those came through... What a pain if messages sent from a computer doesn't go through to the app...
This all could be user error... I didn't want to download the app and I'm grumpy about it...lol

If you hold down on the face, a circle with an X pops up and you can drag the face into that. I've also been able to swipe the face off the screen. You don't have to delete the message to get rid of the face.

I refuse to download it, especially after what I heard on the radio the other day about what it can do with your phone.
