I tried it for the very first time at home a few months ago. I used Clairol Natural Instincts in a shade near my own (to cover up the sprinkling of greys I'm getting). I liked it, it was easy to use and worked very well. It is demi permanent (washes out in 28 washes). I bought some shampoo for colored hair and only washed every other day and it lasted easily 2 months! I am about to do it again (after my haircut later this week so my hairdresser doesn't get po'd that I'm not going to her for $100 coloring instead). $7 for the box and $5 for the shampoo.

This... last time I tried to do my own color, it was highlights and I had bleach blonde hair at the top and nothing set the end. I tried dying it dark over to cover it up and ended up with orange hair. cost me a small fortune to get it fixed. Never Again will I dye my own hair! I do just 1 color now and I go every 8 weeks for about $60. Totally worth it. Check into beauty schools if the price scares you. They always do consultations with their teachers before touching your hair to make sure they are choosing and mixing colors right. I agree with these ladies ^. Either get it professionally done or don't do it. I'm sorry - I know there are a lot of color at home fans here - but in my honest opinion - we can tell and it's not good. No one is ever going to tell you it doesn't look good or that they can tell, but I'm sorry they can .... I can spot it right away. I have a friend who always brags about how much she saves coloring her own hair - and honey it isn't pretty - but she hasn't asked my opinion and so there is no way to give her that opinion unsolicited... I can't afford to get my hair colored often - fortunately no grays yet .... just highlights a few times a year. When I get those gray hairs, I'll either pay to color or leave it I bet you can't every time. Not even close. Hell my hairdresser compliments my color. She is my friend and would tell me if it looked bad. I went gray starting in my 20s. I can't afford to do professional but no way am I letting it go gray. Honestly think what you want..but it can be done well.
