Welcome to the pod! Can you give us an area to go on? Dairy is so regional that without knowing if your in the northeast or southwest or whatever we are just going to be spouting names. Lol you don't have to be exact just maybe an area. Generally though if you live anywhere near a local dairy fresh butter will be divine. Barring that, mostly because it's so hard to find small dairies anymore. The European style land o lakes or the Kerry gold are better butters widely available. (Unsalted ) Whole Foods has one called Kate's homemade butter. Pricey but good When I can I'll get it from two rivers dairy in shrewsbury nj try googling a fresh dairy near you I am on the East Coast but baking with fam in the Carolinas this year. My mom lives near an Amish community though. She brings everything else with her so she had better not fuss if I ask her to carry 5lb of butter on the plane. Yea, I'm sure the Amish butter would be excellent. Not sure what the TSA feels about it though lol

I bought a jersey cow, because of the high fat in the milk. I milk everyday and churn butter a couple of times of week.
Not!

I've been buying Kerrygold because I want grass fed. They have had it at Aldi recently. If I don't get that, I try to buy at Aldi. I think it is usually $2.79 a lb.

I just buy my butter (unsalted) at Sam's Club. I think the price evens out over time. For baking I think butter is butter. For spreading on my bread or rolls I might use a more upscale brand. I agree with pp that for a butter-centric item I might splurge as well. Yum butter.

According to America's Test Kitchen you should always buy unsalted as it will be fresher. The salt content will also vary between brand and batches, so they say to buy unsalted. I try to buy local brands, but I don't really know if there is a flavor difference in USA brands of butter.

there is an amish butter at my local safeway store ( also von's in parts of the country ) that comes in this 2 lb log. IT is so so good, and I buy that if I can. Otherwise I do not have a preference I have seen this at my Tom Thumb (Safeway) and have always been curious. We will definitely have to try it sometime! I stocked up before Thanksgiving when Kroger had Land o Lakes for 1.99/lb. (unsalted) I'm otherwise not too picky, though I noticed a difference in cookies when I used Aldi butter so I avoid that now. We sometimes get Kerrygold or another European brand for buttering bread etc. Central Market has a great selection to choose from.

I like land-o-lakes but they can get expensive without a sale.
