So after 6+years of infertility my sister is pregnant with a baby girl and I'm hosting a baby shower in her honor. She is fostering to adopt a baby boy who is now 13 mo old but because there was a lot of uncertainty when he came they opted not to have a baby shower so I really want this one to be absolute perfection! My plan was to do a brunch menu and mentioned mini chicken and waffle appetizers and a couple other things to my BIL. Apparently he only heard chicken and waffles and is now super excited about a chicken and waffle THEME baby shower . Because the menu changed I feel like a "southern shabby chic" vibe is the way to go complete with the clique mason jars anyway my question what else should I serve with chicken and waffles? I'm making a maple gravy and will test out a couple waffle batter recipes before the day of the event. Have you hosted a waffle bar party? Any tips? How'd you keep the waffles warm?

That sounds like fun and congrats to your sister.
I would serve bacon and sausage and some fruit.
Being from the south, I might also have some cheese grits (kept warm in a crockpot) and some collard greens (but those are not for everyone)

How wonderful that your sister is being blessed with the addition of two babies to her family. For the waffles, I was thinking strawberries and whipped cream. Or, what about pecans? I LOVE pecan waffles.
It sounds like a fun idea for a shower. I wonder if you can make the waffles up ahead of time and keep them warm in the oven?

Ahh I forgot the biggest question. How to keep the waffles warm??!! I was thinking two options: One getting a couple waffle irons and hiring someone to man them or premaking them and having a couple toasters set up.

Wow, she's going from no kids to a 13 month old and newborn...she is a brave lady! Your shower sounds wonderful. I would try to make up the waffles ahead of time and warm in the oven maybe?

I'd definitely have some sausage or other meat for those who don't like chicken. What about mini country ham biscuits - those are easy to make ahead of time. Savory muffins like zucchini, grits or hash browns, fresh fruit.

What about one of those pans with the light flame under it to keep the waffles warm? I would serve fruit and the mason jar idea is really cute! Maye different syrups and jams besides maple.

Ina Garten (Barefoot Contessa) has some savory scone recipes.
You could premade the waffles and warm them in the oven on sheet trays. If you do them in batches, they should be ok.
My kids loved IHOP when they were little because there were tons of choices for pancakes. Fruit compotes, fruit syrups, nuts, chocolate syrup, whipped cream... You could go on forever!
Scrambled eggs are quick to make and you can keep them warm in a crock pot. Or you could make a frittata, which is just baked scrambled eggs. I know Ina Garten and giada DeLaurentis have recipes. You could check out The Pioneer Woman for ideas, too.
You could do center pieces of daisies in mason jars and use pink and blue bandana napkins for napkins. I'm not sure what your budget, but I've seen the old fashioned blue tin plates with white speckles at Dicks in the camping section. Walmart may have them, too.
A big congrats to your sister. And the new auntie!

Congrats! I would have a waffle bar with different toppings like nuts, a couple of different syrups, whipped cream, cut peaches/strawberries, apples & cinnamon. Add the chicken & bacon. Love the mason jars with juice/lemonade. For brunch, I might have some scrambled eggs for a side. Sounds like a fun party to plan

I think grits with candied bacon on top in those small mason jars would be fun. Fruit and cheese is simple but can be elegant. Deviled eggs done a variety of was would be easy to do ahead of time, or loaded potato bites would be tasty. Sounds like a fun shower. Your sister is going to love it!

Sounds like a great idea! All of the above suggestions sound delicious. Love the southern shabby-chic theme, too. I'm sure it will all be wonderful.
ETA: I remember seeing someone on Cupcake Wars make chicken and waffle cupcakes. You might be able to google the recipe. They got rave reviews.

Thank you for all the suggestions! My sister and I talked more about the menu and decided on collard greens, sweet potato and I added shrimp and grits to round it out. Basket1lady thanks so much for the tin plate suggestion! Genius! I can't find a good price online but it lead me in the direction of using pie tins as plates! My sister may nix this idea but I will definitely use it for other parties. Substantial meals like this shouldn't be served on flimsy plates. The venue will either be at my sisters university or some hotel banquet room because of the number of people invited so right now my biggest concern is how to serve the food hot.

If you decide to use a hotel banquet room they might have several waffle makers and each guest could make their own with a topping bar!

In my experience you see a lot of places serve shrimp and grits if they serve chicken and waffles. So maybe that? I personally LOVE chicken and waffles, but I am a southerner. this sounds like my kind of baby shower. Lol

Your menu sounds wonderful!
Not to add to your workload, but what are your plans for beverages? Or dessert?
(Sorry, but I'm hungry after reading this thread!)

I think an electric roaster would keep the waffles nicely warmed and fresh.
A fizzy orange juice punch type drink would be awesome.

msliz the drinks will be lemonade and sweet tea. They nixed a spiked lemonade because someone in his extended family has issues with drinking and family functions The dessert table is where I will tie in the "baby girl" theme so I'm making a pink ombre naked cake, rice krispie bites dipped in pink icing, marshmallows dipped in pink sanding sugar, white chocolate cake balls sprinkled with pink sanding sugar and if a trial run of chicken and waffle cupcakes goes well I will make those too.

What about one of those pans with the light flame under it to keep the waffles warm? That's what they use here when they have breakfast Buffet fund-raisers. I also like the idea of different jams & syrups.

You should make Red Velvet waffles.
