Our typical procedure to determine school closings related to cold is that if it is actually 20 below zero or greater temperature-wise, we consider school closure. We also consider closing if wind chill is 35 degrees below zero." School is also closed/has late arrival or early dismissal if it is unsafe for busses to travel - lots of snow. Cold weather - no problem - all our busses have starters if the battery is flat due to cold. This is in NW Chicago. I'm in MN, and that is what it is here also. This wk has been pretty cold, but hasn't gotten to the -20F yet.

This week the boys had no school on Monday because of snow. One Wednesday oldest didn't have school because an accident took out power to a large area, so the school had no power, telephone or heat. Today because of the cold weather only, they both had a 2 hr delay.
I feel bad for the teachers because with the delays/closings and then Thanksgiving and winter break, the actual classroom time take a hit.

We are in Pgh., PA. We had three 2 hr. delays this week. Monday, not sure why! We had sleet Sunday evening, but it was getting warmer overnight and 40 degrees at 6:00am. Kids were thrilled! We had a 2 hr. delay yesterday and today. The temperature was about 7 degrees with -5 wind chill. They notified us the night before both days and again, the kids were happy! It seems that in Jan. and Feb., it has to be a good bit colder for a delay. There are 2 neighboring school districts that like to be the tough ones and hardly ever have a delay or closing.

In my KC suburb, we close when we get 6 inches of snow. The last 2 years we didn't use any snow days at all. One year we closed for a couple degrees because if was 0 degrees. We never get that cold here. That makes me sad. I grew up in KC and we had good snow every winter. You could count on a snow day or 2 every winter. Global warming.
