Mother and I have been invited to a baby shower next month. A baby boy is expected in early March. Shortly thereafter it should get warm weather here and stay that way until well into fall.
What size baby clothes should I purchase? It has been many years since I went to showers regularly but my favorite baby boy gift was a pair of Oshkosh overalls. There are some short pant version ones on sale at Kohls right now that I thought I might order for Mother to give. I just have no idea whether to order a 6 month, 9 month? I think I remember that the size on the clothes and the age of the baby don't necessarily align.
Thank you from someone who knows next to nothing about babies.

I think I remember that the size on the clothes and the age of the baby don't necessarily align. So true. It depends so much on the size of the baby! My younger son was 9lb 14oz at birth - he never wore 'newborn' size. That said, the best clothing gifts I received were the larger sizes. I got so much in tiny sizes that hardly got worn, especially as I had big babies. Their rate of growth tends to slow a bit once they are 9 months - 1 year old, so clothes n those sizes tend to be worn for longer.

I tend to give 3-6 month sizes because so many people front-load the early sizes. I like the parents to have some things for when the baby-shower initial deluge is used up.
But I would never buy overalls for an infant. They sleep all the time and the buckles are very uncomfortable, hard to work around with car seat straps (on a body that small, there's no where for the buckles and the straps to both be), and they're a huge PTA with diaper changes.

3-6 months is good.
Honestly any size above newborn is great. Babies will be in those sizes longer than in the newborn size. And, it's always nice to have a little stash of brand new baby clothes for when they finally hit that size.
If it's shorts or short sleeves, buy a bigger size so that it will fit when appropriate for the weather. If it's long sleeves or pants, buy a smaller size so it fits now when it's still colder out.

I like the 12-18 month sizes.. you get plenty of little clothes.. and there are lots of second hand ones around.. but not much is given for the older kid. I like 18 month old onies.. they wear them usually at 1 yr to 16 months.

Someone once gave me 18 month and 2T clothes and pjs and it was awesome! By the time she got to that size I was buying everything so it was nice to have a few things already. Plus babies grow so fast and grow out of the smaller sizes that they don't wear them for too long. I always give bigger sizes now. I don't know where you live but if your worried about seasonal issues, jeans and tshirts or pjs are usually safe.

My kids wore overalls all the time when they were little. I loved the Osh Kosh look. Baby overalls have snaps all along the inseam. Diaper changes were much easier with them than with pull-on pants.

To answer the OP - I tend to give items that will be used later - like 12 and 18 months - in articles that can be worn year-round.

Overalls would be cute for a picture session but they probably wont get much actual wear I liked receiving 3-6 or 6-9 sizes

Every baby is so different. I have teeny babies so mine are in newborn a long time (my 1 month old is only just beginning to fit newborn) and my bff's baby is the same age fitting 3-6 months already. I agree with providing the bigger sizes as everyone wants to buy the cute tiny sizes and suddenly your child is 18 months and you have nothing for them lol.

Baby sizes are all over the place, even within families. My oldest was (and still is) a peanut and my youngest seems to be a size larger than my oldest at the same age. Like she wore a Halloween shirt at 10 months that fit my oldest at 14 months. I'd get spring/summer sizes in 6 month size. At the very least, keep the tags on and include a gift receipt if you can.

I'd definitely go for something around 6 months plus. That'll accommodate a larger baby in summer or a smaller one a bt later 😊

I always give larger sizes - like 6 months plus and possibly even 12 months. My niece was a big baby and never wore newborn sizes so I'm always wary about giving anything too small.

add me to the list that buys 12m, 18m, or even 24m clothes - I usually pick cute but practical that'll work year-round...onesies, sleepers, tee-shirts, socks I do the same thing if it's a diaper shower - I buy the bigger sizes - everyone buys the small, adorable stuff

I always buy something they can wear at 3-6 or 6-9 months. Everyone likes too buy things the baby can wear right away. with tons of things they grow out of quickly, and nothing for later on.

If you purchase a 12 month size, I would get a long pant style, if you get 18 month, go with short pant style.

I like going with the bigger sizes, too. It gives the parents something to put away and have for after most of the other gifts are long gone. Everyone likes buying bitty baby clothes. We received so many with both boys that some hardly had a chance to be worn before being outgrown. I'd look at 12 month long overalls for next winter, put a long sleeve tshirt and a short sleeve tshirt with them and they'll bridge from late winter into spring. If the baby is really big, they'll go late fall and into the winter.

12 to 24 months.
But I would have loved preemie clothes. My daughterer was that size about a month or so.

I'm expecting a boy in march too. I also have a 3 year old. Based on my experience, my go to shower clothes are a pack of short sleeve onesies and a pack of matching pants, add the matching socks or caps too if they are available. That's year round attire for us here so no worries about being out of season (onesies can be layered under other things).
I'd get 3 month size and provide a gift receipt- if after the showers are all said and done they do in fact have more than they need in that size they can exchange for whatever else they still don't have. Much easier than hanging on to something in a bigger size for a year only to find out that brand doesn't fit baby well or the season/size doesn't match up and it's too late to exchange.

Thank you all for your input. I'll be looking for larger sizes then. I think of a toddler in overalls but I didn't know if I should buy something for a baby that old but it sounds like it would be just right.

3 to 6 month are my go to shower clothes. YDS was over 9 lbs when he was born and I had to literally squeeze him into the newborn outfit we brought to bring him home in. My favorite clothes for the boys were the little those little Gerber Nightgowns. They fit 0-6 months and they were perfect for them to wear at night time or when we were just staying home.

Everyone wants to give you the tiniest clothes available. And that will be worn for maybe, if your baby is born small enough, a few weeks. I loved when I was give Carter's pj's in sizes 12m & 18m. Loved multiple packs of socks. Soft onesies are great at that size, too. And can be layered in the colder months, or worn as a shirt in the warmer months.

I'll be the lone dissenter on the 18-24 mo clothes for a shower. Before my kid was born, everyone said not to bother with newborn sized clothes because they grow out of them so fast. My kid was almost 7 pounds when she was born (which I thought was a pretty average sized baby) and NONE of the 3 mo clothes I had would fit her. I had to go out and buy a bunch of newborn clothes so she'd have something to wear. She was probably about 4 months old before she outgrew newborn sizes. And because she was so small for so long, the 24 month summer outfits and swimsuits someone gave us never fit her in the summertime, and by then too much time had passed to return or exchange them. My go-to size for baby shower gifts is 3-6 months and always include a gift receipt.

My was born in early March at 7lbs, 5oz. In general, his size was double his age, so at 3 months, he wore 6 month clothes, at 6 months, he wore 12 month clothes. So, for short overalls, I would buy 6 month or 9 month.

I like to get 18 months to 2 years, something to grow into They wear the newborn clothes so little and mostly one's particularly in the summer months I like to pick out something really cute on sale and give the sales receipt so if they hate it they can return it) but I like to give up sizes

My friend's brother and his wife had 7 children. His wife gave me advice that I've never forgotten: Always give larger sizes of clothing because everyone wants to, and will, gift the cute and tiny clothes. Consider the season the recipient will be in when buying clothing - if the baby is born in March, and you buy 18 month clothing, get winter clothes. Seems obvious, but I swear, this was something I (not having had children at that time) hadn't considered. And, finally, diapers are ALWAYS a good gift. Always. (I guess unless the child will be cloth diapered.) Carters and Osh Kosh share a website. You can always find great coupons online and deals there, and the selection is fantastic. Their sale prices plus a coupon will usually beat Kohl's, even with their steep discounts. I love shopping for baby clothes. I don't know if my taste is really juvenile or the girl clothes is super cute, because I'd wear like 80% of the stuff I see for babies (Imagine how cute I'd be in a kitten footed onesie.)

I give 9-12, and 12-18 mo. I also give size 2 diapers. They need them both so quickly. And even if it takes awhile, they'll get there.
Also, I get footed pjs. My kids lived in them- so much easier than clothes.

I like to do 18 month size as another poster mentioned it wasn't nice having larger sizes and items that can be worn year round.
A friends 5 month old wears 9 month clothes, and that size fit my child 10 until 13 months. Kids are all built so different.
