8/5 UPDATE: SO...I had to pay the extra. AND the smaller mat was delayed again & again & again. The replacement finally shipped & was delivered today. I was relieved when I got the email this am that said it had been delivered. Wondered why my dad hadn't called me yet because he ALWAYS calls the minute he gets a package from me. Got home from work & guess where it was delivered?!? MY HOUSE, 1500 miles away from my dad's house. I called the company & requested to have them pick it up & requested a FULL REFUND of both payments. We'll see if that happens, I'm not holding my breath, lol.
OP: Crap! My dad likes expensive things & is hard to buy for. I found an item (hella expensive doormat) I knew he wanted ON SALE & ordered it for him for father's day. The item comes in small & large. I ordered the large one, regularly $99 on sale for $79, also had a 20% off coupon, paid $14 for shipping so the total I paid was $77.20. The small one was on sale for $59 (which would have been $61.20 with the sale & coupon & shipping) but I figured he'd want the large one. Great! ...wrong!
He returned it because he actually wanted the SMALL one...UGH! He thought it would surely be the same or LESS expensive so no big deal to exchange it. But now it's NOT on sale & the 20% off coupon has expired. The small one that he wants is now $79, no 20% off coupon, they charge an $8.95 return fee & I have to pay the $14 shipping again.
So the company called me & said they need my credit card number again for the extra $24.75 that is due to ship the SMALLER item.
Seriously, the only reason I bought the darn thing is because it was ON SALE & I had a coupon. I'm glad they called me & not my dad but I'm mildly annoyed that I have to pay another $25 for a SMALLER item.

I would not be paying the extra cost. But then, there's no way I would buy my father a present at all, so that might cloud my judgement.

Wow yeah that is crazy. Did your dad realize it was that much more expensive to get it exchanged?

Yeah, that does kinda suck. But it's your dad, so what are you to do?
Maybe next year you could go with a gift card?

That is ridiculous! I'd try calling customer service and speaking to the manager. At the most, I'd be willing to even exchange the item and pay the $8.95 return fee. Nothing more!

Totally go the gift card route! I would hope if he knew it was going to cost more for the smaller item he would have said no.

I'm sorry! That stinks. They should have at least let you have the sale price on the smaller mat.

It's too bad that the company that you're doing business with isn't more concerned about keeping you as a happy customer. What is the name of the company?
It really sucks that you have to pay MORE for a smaller item.

That's ridiculous. I wouldn't be paying that. They need to at least honor the coupon, as that's how the original purchase was made.

Can you return it, and just wait until there is another sale to buy it?

If my dad were to know that it was going to cost me more, he would happily settle for the larger one. Can you tell him the situation? I mean, it's dad!

I guess I'd pay the difference, if it came down to that. I would however, echo the advice about trying to call their customer service manager. Hopefully, after explaining the situation, they'll do an even exchange.

I would tell them to refund my card and that I will find another suitable gift elsewhere and see what they will offer.

I wouldn't pay the difference on general principal. The terms & conditions of the sale should be honored. It's not like he is trying to use the discounts to upgrade to a more expensive mat while using an expired coupon! I'm sure the manager would override this extra expense once he/she is made aware of the gifting circumstances. Good luck!

Thanks for commiserating with me. The company is Frontgate. They have cool stuff! No, my dad had no idea & still doesn't (hopefully) that the smaller mat is going to cost me a bunch more. He mailed it back to them with a nice handwritten note asking them to please credit his daughter's credit card $20 for the difference since he only needs the smaller one, lol. I told the customer service person that I would probably just cancel the order & she offered no help & said, "I don't blame you." (insert eye blink). I will email them tomorrow or call the CS manager...just annoying that they want me to pay $101.95 for something I could have paid $61.20 for.

I would give customer service one more try and ask to speak to the manager or a supervisor. The original terms of the sale should be honored. Good luck, and let us know what happens.

That just sucks. I hope you can work this out. Like a pp said, you'd think they'd be more worried about keeping a customer happy.
Word of mouth is a powerful thing - maybe you should tell them you're a Refupea and that you're posting about their lousy customer service and they should think about how many customers they'll lose!

Could it be that your dad only wanted to get the smaller one because he didn't want you spending that much money?

That's ridiculous! I'd call CS and ask to speak to a supervisor, too. At the very least, they should honor the coupon that was used on the original purchase since you aren't wanting to return outright, but exchange.
