I thought it might be fun to start a thread about technique. I know there are lots of newbies out there who perhaps would like some help, hints or direction to creating some of the awesome digital techniques there are out there. If you have something you'd like help with, or a technique you've seen that you just can't figure out or replicate, now's your chance! Then experienced Refupeas, or digiscrappers who know the best places for tutorials and info, can share their information.
Just ask your question, post an image, or share a link, and hopefully someone can stop by and give some helps. Perhaps down the line, we can expand this to more specific helps, rather than just a general "How Do I Do This" thread.

Great idea, I'm sure we all have questions.

Recolouring elements came up on another thread. Who has tips for great recolouring? What if I only want to recolour part of an object instead of all of it?

Here is the way I recolor selected part(s) of an object. I use my lasso tool to select the part of the object I wish to change- ( I prefer the polygonal lasso in Photoshop, it's the same in PSE) I click around the edges of the section, if there is more than one area to change the same way, hold down the shift key, and you can select more than one area. When I have the marching ants around the area, I use one of several methods to change the color. One is the Hue/Saturation filter. Go to Image> Adjustments> Hue/ Saturation. You can play with the hue slider to get the color you like. You can also adjust the saturation to make the color more or less intense, and the lighten/ darken slider will adjust the, wait for it, lightness and darkness! If you want a more subtle color change- you can also use the Color Balance tool- it's in the same place: Image> Adjustments> Color Balance. Just play with the colors you want to change a little.
You might find that there's a sharp line when you make the color change, between the changed area and the rest of the image. If this is distracting, the best way to avoid this is to set a slight feather (1 or 2 px) when you first select the lasso tool. It's at the top of your screen on the menu bar.
Hope this helps!

I'm sure these images will be huge, but here goes: The first is the original photo. Then, the original photo with the two areas I want to recolor selected. On this one, I used the hue/ saturation filter: This one uses the color balance filter:

Thanks stefdesign! And here's a video from Tiffany Tillman which shows a variety of methods for recolouring.

I want to use templates more often, but I'm a novice in using PSE. What the easiest way to make a photo fit in a photo space in a template? Any other tips for using templates would be much appreciated!

In your layered template make sure your photo is right above the layer that has the photo space you want to use. Click CTRL G (or Cmd G if you're on a Mac) to clip the photo to the photo space. Chances are your photo is much bigger than the space on the template - you should be able to see the bounding box around it. Grab this box by any one the corners (with a red circle around them in the image) and holding your left mouse button down drag the box in until your photo fits the space. Once you let go of the mouse button you should see the tick and cross box in the bottom right hand corner of your image bounding box. Resizing from the corners will make sure the picture ratio stays the same so you won't end up with extra tall and skinny people!
Your photo may no longer be centred in your photo box but you can drag your photo back to where you want it to be - so you can centre it or move it to one side to get rid of that tourist that accidentally wandered into your shot.
You can also resize the photo before you click CTRL G to clip it to the photo space - I do it both ways depending on what else I have already done on my layout.
You can resize patterned papers and embellishments the same way.

Stef,I know that you helped me with the same issue over on the 2ps web site, but I am struggling with my color settings in PS. If I use the picker or a swatch,I get a faded washed out version of the same tone. Can you help? Before you had me change a setting and it was a big improvement, but I am unsure what you told me. Every color is not as vivid as the swatch appears. Thanks Pam

I wish I could remember what I told you, pamp! Hmmmm. Are you using your picker on a photo or a solid colored area of a PP or something? Since you are using PS, are you set for RGB or CMYK (CMYK is not as bright or vivid as RGB). I'd check that first, go to Image: Mode, and make sure RGB is checked. Let me know if that's not the problem, and maybe we can figure it out.

Thanks Stef.... I made sure the RGB was checked,I am frustrated to be sure... it is probably something miniscule that I have overlooked.

Templates confuse the crap out of me. Am I supposed to remove the blocky like elements that are there? Are they just place holders like "hey, put something from the kit here"? So I open the PSE file and work on each layer like that, subbing in what I want where?

Hi tania7424, you can either just fill the elements with color, use them as masks, or you can just use them as a guide as to where to put your own digital elements. Be sure to safeguard your original template if you are going to want to reuse it by giving your new layout a different name when saving. I often start with a template I have downloaded, but my finished layout often looks nothing like the template! It just gives to a "boost" to getting started! I love Andrea Gold's templates by the way!
