On Friday, my brother in law was in a bad ATV accident. He recently started working as a land surveyor and apparently they use ATV's for their work (I initially thought it was odd to be on an ATV in the winter since they live in the Midwest). My sister does not really know much about how the accident occurred but there was a witness who said he saw BIL turn abruptly and then fall off the ATV. His head hit the pavement. Wasn't wearing a helmet. He was flown to a hospital in a bigger town and is in the ICU there. He doesn't have any other internal injuries, but has a fractured skull and swelling in his brain. They have him sedated and intubated. He has shown some signs of responding (movement when people are talking) but no other changes since Friday.
My sister is 26 and has a 3year old and a 1year old. Apparently when her husband started this new job, he left his job that had health insurance (she is a realtor and isn't offered insurance through her employer, I guess?). So, they don't have health insurance. I don't think that was the best decision to leave a job without insurance, but it is what it is at this point. As of now his medical costs should be covered by workers comp.
Anyway, there is a lot going on for them. I'm not a very religious person but they are and we would all appreciate any prayers and positive thoughts sent their way. Thanks!
Update 1/11--he has an infection in his lungs. They have tried three antibiotics and it has gotten worse, but my sister says that they are now hopeful that they know which antibiotic to use for the type of staph that he has. He also had a serious drop in heart ate last night and are not sure why. He is now on a paralytic? And she thinks it is helping with the swelling in his brain.

How awful and scary! I hope he's ok. I'm surprised that under Occ Health & Safety it isn't mandatory to wear a helmet.

How awful and scary! I hope he's ok. I'm surprised that under Occ Health & Safety it isn't mandatory to wear a helmet. Just because regulations require a helmet, it doesn't mean everyone obeys them. If the rule was broken, the company will be fined. Conteactos I worked fir got fired due to employees deciding not wear safety harness that was in the truck.

I am sorry to hear this and hope he recovers quickly. It may give your sister some small comfort to know that workers compensation is no fault insurance; if the accident happened in the course of employment, workers compensation should pay even if he was at fault. Workers compensation covers 100% of medical expenses as well as a percentage of lost wages.
