I used to work in a lingerie shop, people would actually return pants that had obviously been worn and not washed and expect their money back. The manager called them 'snail trail' returns. ![:|](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/plain.png) I used to work in Marks and Spencer's, and another member of staff who worked in Customer Services told us about a guy who brought back some underwear. He was adamant that they hadn't been worn. Afterwards she told us that he had obviously worn them, as there were pubic hairs stuck in the nice tighty whiteys I feel bad for your poor manager who had to handle that man's dirty underwear! She should have received hazard pay.

I work at Walmart and if you pitch a big enough fit they will let you return anything and give you a gift card.
We have an older gentlemen that returns his " spoiled " milk every couple weeks for a new gallon. He has done it for years and everyone knows him yet they continue to give him his way.
My favorites are the ones who return strollers. I ask what was wrong with it and they say nothing. They went to Disney and used it for the day and don't need it anymore. They get their money back every time!
People try to receipt shop and they never bring up the right item even though they just supposedly bought it. So they get to leave with the stolen wrong item.

When I was at school I had a Saturday job in a Shoe Shop (Freeman Hardy and Willis for the UK peas). People regularly returned shoes that they had clearly bought for one occasion, such as a wedding. They would return them, and the little indentations and scratches in the sole gave the game away, as would the smell of the Cif they had used to clean them. It is not uncommon nowadays for people to buy high end clothes for a specific occasion, leave all the tags in place, and return them, stinking of perfume, deodorant, fags and BO, after one wearing. The practice has a name, but can't remember what it is. I call it dishonest. If you said something stunk like a fag here in the USA , you might get punched! Cigarettes. And violence will get you in trouble with the law.

Two of the most ridiculous take back stories I have are both about one person. One of my best friends. First, she tried to return those little knobs you put on kids shoe strings so they don't come undone. You know the white ones sold by kids shoe stores. You press them down and feed the string through the hole and then release. She returned them to the store without a package and old and dirty. She said she wanted to return them because her son had figured out how to get them off of his shoes. When the girl refused the return (they could have come from anywhere) she started screaming about how her baby could have choked. The girl still said no. I was pleased. I thought it was embarassing and awful. The second story is way worse. She returned something she didn't actually buy. She took her kids to a large big box retailer to take photos and she changed them into some clothes she liked from inside the store. Got the pictures taken at the store's photo studio, but then didn't buy the clothes. She put them back on the hanger and back on the racks. Her kids were 1 and 3 at the time. I was HORRIFIED. I couldn't believe she told me that story. How on earth could she think that was okay? She said that she "didn't want them." I used to get clothes off the rack and put them on the kids for Christmas pictures in K-mart, then afterwards I put the clothes in lay-a-way.

sisterbdsq...I know where you are coming from. I think some people don't understand that Butch and Bear are types, not insults. I didn't think you were being homophobic at all. Sorta reminds me of thread were people said it was offensive to call someone "brown" (like that;s some kind of insult or something--SMH). I understand where she's coming from too. And sisterbdsq is a very open person, and has never shown even the slightest bit of homophobia that I have seen. I doubt she was trying to insult anyone, but that won't stop the trainwreck some are determined to create.

I returned a watermelon twice last summer. It is so hard to find a good ripe watermelon in this state! I bought one and it was just so green and sour. I returned it. I bought another one a month later and it was too ripe and mushy. I hate wasting money on food.

So the store should suffer a loss because you don't know how to pick a watermelon? ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/SCylSBljj3e3QKjxF2vn.jpg)

Yes I should not have to "pick" a good one. They should all be good. Just like everything else in the store should be fresh.

I worked at several different clothing stores during college. My favorite story was when I was working at Old Navy and a woman came in to return at least three large bags of baby boy clothes. After about ten items I asked her if there was something wrong with the stuff and she said "Yea, The ultrasound tech said it was a boy but we ended up with a girl!" Luckily her friends and family gave her lots of gift receipts but man was it a process to get all of it returned. Oooooh.... DH did this. The doctor's told us #2 was a girl. I didn't even tell DH for weeks because I had a feeling they were wrong. When I slipped up and told him, he came home from Baby Gap with a bunch of cute dresses and matching hats, shoes, etc. About three weeks later, we had a more advanced ultrasound and the tech looked at the records and said, "whoever thought this was a girl was very wrong." He did take the dresses back and exchanged them for cute little boy outfits. My apologies to all of the Baby Gap workers he dealt with.

The practice has a name, but can't remember what it is. I call it dishonest. When I was in college, I returned a top that I changed my mind about. I saw the cashier (a middle-aged woman) actually put it up to her face and sniff it! Right in front of me! I couldn't believe it. I did later find out that two friends of mine actually did the buy an expensive dress for a special occasion and return it, so yeah, it does happen. As far as what they did with the tags, I believe they tucked them in or sometimes even were able to removed them in a way they could put them back on. I'm glad you weren't returning a pair of pants.

Many years ago I had a friend that would buy very expensive clothing, wear it to weddings etc then return them. On day she bought a $250 dress (very expensive nearly 30 yrs ago) which was cream lace. Her husband forced her to return it as he was sure she would spill something on it and they would have to keep it. She argued for ages and was devestated to return it. My daughter works in retail and yes, after race days young guys come in with shoes they have worn for a few days. To minimise the wear and tear they apparently cover the bottom of the shoes in gaffer tape. She discovered this, as one of the guys forgot to remove it! After saying he had never worn them.

During high school and college, I worked for (what is now) Dillard's. At the time, it had a "you can't ask for a receipt policy" coupled with "we will take anything back, no matter what." I remember vividly having one woman pointed out to me. When her son was born, she'd bought him several full outfits, including shoes. Every time her son outgrew an outfit, she returned it, pointing out a frayed seam or hole in the sock or the like. The store then allowed her to replace the outfit in a bigger size. They didn't force her to stick with same brand or figure out a price point or anything. She did this for 18 years, until her son graduated from high school and joined the military. Wow, that is NUTS!! Nervy too!

Ok. <insert totally red face here>. I usually don't get all riled up about this kind if Shizz... So today, I am unpacking my Diet Coke from Costco. I find an empty Diet Coke can. As in, no Coke saw the inside of the Can, What do I do? Write it off? Complain to Costco for a new can? Or, do I just caulk it off to $.35 lost.
What would the refugees do?
