The only way my kids could get an A in PE is if they put in extra time running laps. There is a daily schedule where kids could do this after school, during lunch, or before school. If they do just the basics, they get a B minus. I'm ok with this.

Our school grades on preparedness, participation, and proper attitude. If you are hopeless with a ball, can't run worth a dime, and sink instead of float, you can still do well if you're there on time, dressed properly, truly attempt what is happening in class, and you don't act like a jerk about it. Our school is the same. You don't have to be athletic to get a good grade in PE. I think grading them on the number of sit-ups they can do is ridiculous.

PE for me was like a daily round of torture. It was the football coach and he didn't always handle non-athletic people well. On the other hand, all we had to do was get a bit teary eyed and mumble stuff about periods and cramps and he would send us off to the bleachers to read, so there was that. I think a lot of us had periods that lasted the entire year in high school. (I don't remember middle school, maybe I blocked it out as just too much pain to remember. ) My boys though, I can't remember anything about PE either in middle school or high school. Both of them are/were extremely athletic though and it is possible that they just did it. I don't remember any blip in their grades in middle school or the required high school classes so I guess they did okay.

Our HS requires PE to graduate but lots of kids are on an all AP track and PE is a 4class not a 5. For this reason you can get a GPA waiver in PE (all classes), dance (all classes), band BUT NOT orchestra. All kids in band are also in marching band however the orchestra kids are not so dont get the waiver. Band is also only a fall semester waiver iirc.
You dont have to take the waiver but it is available.

The "fitness test" was 25 points, she got a 15. The class median was 16.5. Every day participation is 8 points (I can't remember the breakdown but points for dressing down, participation, enthusiasm and something else), she had a B average on that and then the on the Fitness test took her grade down to a C. Her PE teacher is also her art teacher, or her art teacher is also her PE teacher which is kind of weird, she seems to be complaining a lot about art as well so it could be the teacher or it could just be dd. On the days she has PE (her last class of the day) she is usually a big grump when she gets home (I don't even have to ask if it was an even or an odd day based on her mood/complaining), so maybe she needs to fake some enthusiasm to get her grade up. On days they run she often complains she's sore. She's a scrawny 12 year old who hates to run long distances. She used to play soccer but hated the running part, but she liked track last year at elementary school because it was short distances. Has my long legs and short torso so can't touch her toes (I never could), or do a pull up (I remember having a 0 on that on MY fitness test in middle school but it didn't hurt my grade)... there was also some part of the test that was doing push ups and touching a ball on the floor with your nose, that sounds like fun... When I was in middle school we did a lot (like several days a week) where all we did was relay races in the gym. Run across the gym doing the crab walk, 4th person in line has to walk across the gym backwards etc, and not a lot of sports or running laps until high school. Our classes were also only 45 minutes long and I don't remember being sore after PE. I'm already considering hiring a tutor because of her math grade, maybe I need to find her a personal trainer as well. Middle school was bad enough the first time...

My middle school aged child, and my junior high school aged child came home this week and told me they were having fitness tests and they were given the grading scale. They were also given a full month to work on them. When I was a kid PE was a real grade that had to be earned like all other grades. I am glad to see this to be honest. When I was a kid we were tested on sports rules etc too.

Our school district allows for kids to "substitute" any outside physical activities (swim, dance, soccer, gymnastics, etc.) for PE class as long as the child takes five hours weekly. We did this all through middle school because the middle school PE teacher was a sadist.

We did this all through middle school because the middle school PE teacher was a sadist. Interesting but I don't think that's fair. I pay 200 dollars a month for my kids' dance, tumbling, and martial arts. I drive 20 miles one way 4 evenings a week. I can afford it. My kids are typical pea kids in that they have high As so I can allow the time to do these things. To me this sounds like the poorer kids get the shaft. What do these kids do during PE time? I guess I have a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact some places use PE as nothing more then a 30-45 mins block of time to get active vs a real class with instruction. Save

Perhaps communicate with the PE teacher to determine the "truthiness" of what your daughter is saying. ? As a parent to a teenager, Just sayin'

Hated PE! And my grades reflected that also. Graduated from HS in mid 70's so there were very few organized teams for girls at that time, in my area.
I started dance when I was 4, was a competitive pair skater from grades 7-9, played rec softball, going on to play field hockey in college, and also played ball on a semi-pro woman's team.
But I had no arm strength, could not do chin up, push ups, climb the rope, etc to save my soul. Failed the Kennedy fitness challenge every stinkin time. I did fail what they tested me on, but I was also very active and in great shape. Too bad what I did outside of school counted for nothing.
