You haven't missed anything. It means the consumers will pay the 20%, which will then be given to the business owners who are building the wall.
But Mexico is totally paying for the wall. Not you!

He's now stated that the plan is a 20% tax on all imports from Mexico. Doesn't this mean American businesses and consumers will pay instead of Mexico? Or am I missing something. Well whenever I argue that a business tax is ultimately passed on to the consumer - people assure me that no, the company will just take lower profits. So I guess Mexican businesses will pay for the wall.

Yes, that's exactly what it means. It's meant to encourage you to buy American by making foreign goods more expensive. Unfortunately, as you've touched on, it makes domestic products more expensive as well. Do you remember what inflation looked like in the '70s?

Do we really think Congress would approve a 20% tax on imports from Mexico?

Did trump tweet about his business dealings before running for president? Serious question.

I wish I could remember which GOP higher-up said that she thought we could survive a Trump candidacy, but feared we wouldn't survive a Trump presidency due to the long-term damage done.
It will take years to recover from the damage to foreign relations that he has already done.

I disagree. The way I see it, Mexico isn't suffering from large influx of illegal immigrants into their country. In fact, Mexico has a very, very strict policy with respect to immigration and have no problem jailing offenders even when the entry into Mexico is by mistake (remember that soldier who was held for almost a year after he missed the turnaround and was stopped right inside Mexico...the one Obama wouldn't step in to help).
So, Mexico hasn't got the problem, Mexico won't cooperate with the border patrol, Mexico has the benefit on the trade deal, millions of dollars are sent to Mexico from illegals in this country.
Frankly, I can't see where the US has much to lose if Mexico decides to stay home

NBC just reported that the head of the US Border Patrol also just resigned. Oh great... I am sure Trump will put one of his relatives in that open position....

Looks like they should have kept him there longer, because he landed himself back in jail here in the states for DUI & drug possession...

I saw an interview earlier regarding this, and it was said there's a big internal issue in Mexico right now that the U.S. needs to be careful about (and isn't being discussed): the Mexico presidential election takes place next year. The candidate that ran, and lost, I believe the last 2 elections is very anti-American, and a pro-Chavez type. The fear is if the Mexican president/government doesn't stand up to America combined with the citizens of Mexico being a bit pissed at the U.S. right now, this candidate could run his election on the anti-American anger and win. So I started to look the issue up, and found this so far: Mexico Election

Forget drug cartels, we will see the rise of the avocado cartels. Can't wait to see the movies. Everybody remain calm. Texas has been stockpiling Mexicans for years, and I believe we've also got some avocados around here. Everything's going to be OK. We'll be dispatching abuelitas shortly to bring guacamole to the masses.

Who will fill our shoes with TPP? China. Who will fill our shoes with NAFTA? China. EXACTLY! I posted pretty much the same thing up thread. Morocco seems to have a pretty decent supply of avocados here. They don't make guacamole here but rather what I would akin to a smoothie of sorts. It's a sweet avocado milk. Pretty good actually. Maybe Morocco can jump in the market. But on second thought, I like our quiet bubble here. Stay out of the fray!

And as somebody who works in produce - interested to hear your thoughts. I see that you already found articles. I was on my phone and had to boot up my old dying laptop to properly reply.
Full truck loads of avocados have been hijacked and held for ransom. You can't make this stuff up. If you bought avocados in the late summer and fall, more than likely the store was taking a loss for each avocado bought. Honestly, not sure what's going to happen in the future with avocados. It's a sad, troubling scenario.
For produce in general, I can only speak in depth about my specific commodity..and I won't do that because, OMG, so boring. But most people don't realize, I know I didn't until I took this job, how much we depend on Mexico. I'm cringing with every tweet he makes. Don't fuck with Mexico yo.
In one vendor meeting we had, the owner said he had to hire 1000 people to get 80 people to work his farm. Most labor didn't make it until lunch on their first day. So he is going through a government program to bring in labor from Mexico just so he can have adequate labor. It's the same government program Trump has used to acquire labor for his business in California.
Our vendor also said the background checks that the incoming labor force has to go through was so thorough that the presidential candidates (meeting was in the fall) probably wouldn't qualify.
Currently there are intermittent blockades, protests, fuel 'surcharges', and other fun stuff going on with trucks crossing the border in response to Trump's presidency. And it hasn't even been one full week yet.
In general, Americans have it easy when it comes to plentiful and cheap produce in our supermarkets thanks to Mexico and Mexican labor forces. If Mexico really wants to retaliate against Trump, it would be simple to do.
I could go into way more detail. Like how the rain in California these past two weeks and the freeze in Yuma has really increased our dependency on Mexico just this week alone. But then we start venturing into the boring stuff again. So I'll stop. LOL.
