Wow, your idea of snippy is nice! I would have given him a piece of my mind right there. Two dogs, neither one trained. He's a liability waiting to happen.

Great response! So what did the dog owner say? Nothing! He just shouted the dog's name, grabbed his collar and pulled him back up the street. -- Poor dog. eta to say that this sort of thing always makes me sad for the poor dogs. It's not a dog's fault when things happen. I bet 99% of the time it's the owners' fault. (I'm sure there are a few dogs who are naturally mean, just like some people.) The poor dogs don't know any better, then they get bitten by another dog (these people are lucky it was my timid dog that theirs jumped on, although timid dogs can bite just as much as braver ones), or hit by cars, or blamed for whatever.

As I was reading, I was really hoping that you would say exactly what you said. Good for you.
As a walker, I'm getting tired of barking and growling dogs. I'm afraid that something will happen one day.

Good for you. I agree, I feel sorry for the dog to be stuck with such sucky owners. I hope the dog doesn't end up getting hit by a car.

I think it was great. People who ignore leash laws drive me crazy.

I would report the dog and then walk with mace.

I would call and report this guy with the unrestrained dog to the authorities first thing Monday morning. Not because of being some mean neighbor, but for the safety of the dog. Clearly the guy has no thought about keeping his own dog safe and getting a ticket or having to bail the dog out of the pound is the only thing that is going to get his attention. Certainly nothing you say or do will. And I don't think what you said was snippy at all.

I agree with the others that your response was perfect.
I used to live next door to a woman who didn't care to restrain her dog either. Wherever dogs roam becomes "their" territory and her beast began to think the whole street was his. It got so bad that he tried to attack my kids in my driveway. One day he attacked my neighbor who was walking her dog on the opposite side of the street, harming both her and the dog. Even after being taken to court for that, she still didn't learn. For everyone's safety, including that poor puppy, please call animal control or code enforcement. They will likely only issue a warning the first time or two, but hopefully it will be a wake up call to the owner.

Not snippy... I have no patience for people who leave it up to others and/or luck that no harm comes to their pets... That dog deserves someone who will leash or fence them in so they can play and get out puppy energy without risk...

If it was me walking my Aussie, it would've ended badly. She does not like other dogs in her space. Our GSD dislikes labs because so many of them have no boundaries and invade her space. She has met more than a few Marley's and she's only 2 1/2 herself! Your response was perfect and not at all snippy!

Not snippy at all. I am in the camp that believes there are far more problem owners than problem dogs. And cats. I feel sorry for the two choc labs.

LOL -- you were perfect. I did have a chocolate lab and I know the behaviour you are talking about. you only did what the owner asked

you were perfect! We had a neighbor dog that was like that but it was a little dog. Everytime we went by (we walked our dogs everyday) this little dog would fly out after my dogs. On more then one occasion we told them they needed to leash that dog. It would run out in front of cars on a daily basis. Then one day the dog disappeared. They asked if I knew what happened to their dog. Hmmm no but maybe you should have kept him on a leash? I felt bad for the kids but darn they knew it was a problem and it was not just us they had a problem with!

I don't think you were snippy at all. And if he does it again, I would call. Twice we have walked past this house in our neighborhood and this little yorkie has come running out and started growling at and biting my dog. My dog is a completely non-aggressive pitbull so she basically just tries to get away from the little yorkie. The people always come chasing her down the street and pick her up and take her home, but they never even bother to apologize to us that their dog is biting mine. I swear next time it happens, I'm going to call on them.

Nope, you were great! And if it had been me, I'd have immediately called Animal Control and reported him. At least let the city make some money off of his obstinate stupidity.

My dog right now is a dog that I have because my neighbors quite a ways down the street left their dog out for 5 plus days and nights while they were away. I thought that no one wanted him any more, and was scared he would get run over, so took him in. It caused a little drama, but in the end, we got to keep him. Then the people that I rescued Max from got 2 more dogs and were letting them roam the neighborhood. I ended up talking to them about the dogs and after I talked to them, never saw the dogs roaming again, because I think the lady was scared I was going to take her dogs from her. The neighborhood we live in is a little ways from town, and the people out here seem to think it's okay to let your dogs roam all over the place. It used to be really bad, but it's better now. Glad you spoke up. I will never understand why people think it's okay to let their dogs not only endanger themselves, but also other people.
