After using sumatriptan since it first came out, it became less effective for me. About 2 years ago I switched to Maxalt and am having better results. I don't take anything as a preventative. I've had migraines for 40 years, since your son's age. There are so many more options for treatment now. I hope he finds one that works for him.

Sorry he (and anyone else!) suffers migraines....it must be awful !! It's a shame he is resisting accupuncture, because I've heard great things! Would he be willing to try chiropractic? I have 2 friends who suffered horrible migraines for YEARS, until they found the right chiropractor. They RARELY get them anymore---maybe it'd be worth a try? Before you read this---I am NOT one of those people who believe essential oils are the miracle answer for EVERYTHING--- but my migraine-suffering friends rub peppermint oil all over their scalp when they feel one coming on; and SOMEtimes, it gets rid of it! Maybe it'd help your son? I do NOT get migraines, but I can attest that the oil helps me, too---*SOMETIMES* When I feel a SINUS headache coming on, (omg---before it rains, I get those barometric pressure headaches (or---"chinooks") mentioned above!!!, and I massage peppermint oil onto my scalp, face, and neck--- sometimes helps my pain, too! I hope you find something that helps him! ETA....I wonder if a T.E.N.S. would help?

scrappintoee yes peppermint oil or other mixtures can help just like ice or heat can help. Feet in hot water, ice on head is nice. I also use muscle relaxant creams (Ben Gay etc) on my neck if it's a tension built one. For me all those things don't make the migraine go away it just helps ease the symptoms.

I have tried it all but nothing keeps me from getting them. I take Depakote that makes them less excruciating however I have gained 20 lbs in 2 years from taking it. I tried, Topamax ( which was a horror story for me), every beta blocker, hypertension med, Botox, acupuncture, took vitamins kept food diaries, onions and garlic are a trigger as are changes in the weather. I take Imitrex as a rescue drug both the pill or if it's really bad, the injectable. Hope he finds some relief soon.

My mom's migraines were triggered by caffeine and chocolate. She finally got a prescription that helped. She doesn't get them anymore (I think hers started in her 40's and probably finished in her 70's), but I think she still has a prescription for the medication in case she needs it. She doesn't drink coffee and hasn't eaten chocolate in decades.
A friend of mine would take some Excedrine Migraine and drink a regular Coke to get rid of her migraines. No prescription necessary for her, but the caffeine in Coke was a must.

My dd has had migraines for the past few years, with multiple triggers. She has a lot of food sensitivities (both migraine triggers and other reactions). She is also triggered by stress, fragrances, weather changes and hormones.
Because of her food sensitivities, a lot of prescription medications aren't safe for her. We have been using some supplements, with limited relief. The thing that seems to help her the most is a probiotic taken at the recommendation of her allergist. He felt that it would help her be less reactive to her food triggers. It has made a huge difference for her. He told her to take one with multiple strains in it, so we went to a natural pharmacy and got their recommendation.

UGGH! I feel for him! I live in the bathroom for a day and half. Sometimes the hot water bath as hot as you The Topirmate did help but it took a while. It also made them not so intense. I can catch it early if I do a coke and excedrine migraine and half a benedryl or a full as the benedryl will help loosen the muscles in my face. I hope he can get some relief! And find some good meds or something. It does make a difference if you can get your body totally relaxed like the hot bath.

I used to get migraines quite often, but I started taking Vitamin B12, iron, and folate a few years ago for other health issues. As time went on, I realized I was not getting migraines at all. I've also added magnesium and Vitamin D to my daily vitamins.
I'd ask the doctor for a blood work up. Find out the levels for B12, folate, iron, and D. He might be low in those and that could be triggering the migraines.

My 15yo DD takes Amitriptyline for preventive. It has helped lessen them and lessen the severity. She had started with Topamax and did okay on that but didn't see much results other than losing weight (which was ok). She takes maxalt for when she gets one. She also takes excedrin migraine once in awhile. She had been having them 3-4 times a week and she's probably down to only 1-2 a month.
I take topamax and lisinopril for preventive. I take Zomig when they are bad. I also take excedrin migraine (generic). I only take zomig maybe once a month.

Horrible migraines, brain fog, etc. My trigger is gluten. I gave it up-can't even touch it-and so many things (including the migraines and brain fog) cleared up. It was all related to the allergy and inflammation for me. The difference was astounding.

I tend to get migraines with my triple threat--stress, lack of sleep, and decreased water intake. When I feel one coming on, I take ibuprofen, drink water, and drink a Diet Coke. Sometimes for bad ones, it has to be a McDonald's Diet Coke. Not sure why, but not other diet sodas work as well and no other Diet Cokes work as well. I also try to get massages to help the tension in my upper back and neck. For really bad ones, I've taken phenergan and/or Benadryl to help with sleep.
