Change of topic but I wonder if this method would work on some of my BE eyeshadows. I like the colors but I don't like the loose eyeshadows anymore. I think I'll pick out my least favorite of those I saved and try it.

Would you have swapped it out if the cashier didn't see you? You admitted it would be wrong to swap it out while you were in the store, what changed once you got home? It is wrong. No I would not return it.

I'll be honest and say I would return it. And I would be honest when I did, saying it was brand new and had not been used, and it only dropped 2 inches. I would not, however, return it if I had used a portion of it. I can't imagine them not taking it back. It's eye shadow, not a dropped $3000 TV. As long as you're honest, I don't see the problem with returning it. If they turned me away, I'd buy an additional new one, and keep that one for home use. I would go in and be honest about it. All they can say is that it can not be returned. It's worth a shot!

I wouldn't return it, but I'm probably not the best person to ask because I HATE returning things. I guess I'm just lazy or something.
In this case, I'd probably go buy a new one to use in the travel compact and keep the purple one at home.
Although I am intrigued by the repair technique--I might try that first and then if it didn't work, go with my plan above.

No I wouldn't. I don't return things when what is wrong is my fault. I was telling a co-worker that I broke my FitBit band the way I was drying it after taking my water fitness classes. She said I should contact FitBit and see if they would replace it. I told her I knew it was my fault the way I was drying it. She still said I should see if they would replace it. Why do people not understand that we all pay for our fault returns by higher costs Consumers insist on better customer service and then some take advantage of that.

You know, it wouldn't even occur to me to try to take back something I broke so no, I wouldn't take it back. Buy a new one for traveling, you now have a fun new color for home.

I agree that I shop at Sephora in part because of their liberal return policies and good customer service. So, in theory, I might take it back to the store, tell them I broke it, and see if they could help me out. In reality, though, I suck at taking things back to the store, so it would probably just it at home. Also, great info about fixing broken makeup - I had no idea!

(No snark intended, just genuinely curious) It's dishonest, IMO, because it is not the store or eyeshadow manufacturer's responsibility to replace a product that was broken by a customer. You purchased an item in perfect condition - the store fulfilled their end of the bargain. I think there are way too many people who feel like they can damage things and expect that someone else will pick up the tab for their mistake. If you received a product in perfect, working condition and damaged it though your own actions, why is it the store's responsibility to pay for your mistake?

I am going to have to try that repair trick myself on some Ulta individual eyeshadows I have that crumbled after I traveled with them.

(No snark intended, just genuinely curious) No snark intended in my reply, even though things don't always come across well in print ... the OP makes no mention of telling the truth, and she has already indicated that the cashier had noticed what had happened, and she decided at that point not to attempt to swap it. If she turns up now at the shop, she can tell the truth, and they may change it, but are under no obligation to do so under the circumstances, or she can try to blag her way through it, lie, and get her money back that way. However you cut it, it was her fault and she admits that, so how can attempting to get the store to give her her money back or an exchange be honest? It is only an eyeshadow, she should suck it up.

"Being honest" about it wouldn't be good enough for me. I would be way too embarrassed to walk into any store and say, here, I broke this, so please give me a new one. No matter how liberal their return policy is.
I would just buy a new one. Or try the cool fix-it trick!

I'd try fixing it - would save me the trip and saves one more thing being being tossed... If it didn't work, I'd go back and let them know what happened... If they were okay with exchanging it, then I'd be happy, and if not then no harm done... If you're honest with what happened, you're not taking advantage - it's their choice how to handle it... There is always margin built into the cost of things for situations where a warranty doesn't apply but the company wants to make a customer happy... And because I know where I am - if it's abused then the prices go up, but if it's not used (for genuine customer service instances), no one is getting value for those extra few cents we all pay... I'd rather the extra penny I pay go to someone who had an innocent accident, will use and enjoy the product, and has a reasonable reason why they need a new/different one... I love the broken eye shadow video. That's one of those life hacks I've apparently missed. I would totally try that before wasting time and gas going to the store. In regards to not returning something because you're the one who broke it, sometimes, believe it or not, the business just wants you to be happy. Period. They don't care whose fault it is. Disney for example, has the best customer service I've ever experienced. If you drop your ice cream or your balloon pops or gets away from you, they replace it. Because they like their customers who pay buckets of money to be there, and want their customers happy. That in no way means I feel entitled to a new eye shadow or ice cream because I'm a goof, but hell, I'll sure take advantage when a company is awesome like that. They get a life-long customer out of the deal, so it's win-win.

That. Stores have liberal return policies because they think they have to in order to have good customer service. But, I think that taking back something that you broke, even if you know the store has a liberal return policy, is just taking advantage of that store and their policy. I think it's wrong. If you bought a vase at say Nordstrom's, a store that is well-known for their customer service and return policy, would you take it back?

There are tutorials on YouTube that can show you how to repress a damaged shadow using alcohol. I wouldn't return it if it broke because of my actions. I was going to say this as well. I broke my favorite eyeshadow and my daughter out it back together with rubbing alcohol and its as good as new!
