I want to add a bit to the discussion since the general trend of the advice seems to be:old Singers are good and new machines are not. I've had old singers, and what they do....sew a straight stitch... They do well if in good working order. So if all you want to do is sew a seam, they are excellent. But....new machines are soo versital, and they sew to perfection all kinds of stitches. You can over stitch an edge, top stitch perfect 1/16" stitch, zig-zag, use dual needles, make perfect buttonholes by dropping the button in an attachment.....and much more. The old and the new are just so different that your sewing needs are the deciding factor on which you choose. And just for full disclosure, I have more than one sewing machine.

Too old for a new one ? Never ! But the one you have might be better off fixed being you don 't use it often.

My mom gifted me with her sewing machine last time I was home it's 5 years older than me. And works fine and was the top of the line (with cams for fancy stitches) I still have mine I bought 34 years ago. I lost out on my grandmother's sewing machine to my aunt, that one is almost 80 years old. All three of these machines have only needed a little bit of machine oil and a good periodic cleaning. Unlike one I got for DD.

My great-grandmother's Singer treadle works just fine. I also have a 1933 Singer Featherweight. I learned to sew on my mother's 1967 Tiffany blue Singer, used it until 1995 when I returned it to her and she's still using it. I currently use a 15 year old Husqvarna. The only non-success was a Sears Kenmore that only lasted about five years of light duty sewing.
When my father passes, I will inherit the treadle machine and can't wait to use it (not anticipating the death of my father in any way, though.)

My Singer is about 46 - works like a charm. I'd get it fixed if it broke!

I have my mom's old singer from the 40's that as far as I know works great, although I haven't used it in a while (right now my scrapbook paper is on top of it, lol) and I have Singer Genie (I think?) that was a gift when I was about 15. Although it has plastic, and a "mod" design on it, I use it all the time. Would never part with either one. Wish I had my grandmother's treadle, too!
Really look into getting yours repaired.
