Leave your dog in the car with windows cracked to run into store for 1 thing, with the temp 75 degrees?

No! I may even break the window to give the dog more air.

No, I would not at all. Animals are too precious to us.

It just isn't okay. The temps rise so quickly in a car even if the windows are cracked a few inches. Add to that a fur coat and you have heat exhaustion/ stroke. If you wouldn't do it to a little kid who can't get out, don't do it to an animal. We went hiking today with our dogs and ended up getting BBQ. I took them out of the car and sat outside in the shade when the family went in to order. We ate at picnic tables outside where they could be in the shade. No way would I leave them for one minute.

No, I wouldn't. Not just because of the heat inside the car, but because my dog could be stolen. There has been quite a few dogs stolen from cars in my area. I don't know if it is from animal lovers who don't want an animal left in a car, or from people who want an expensive small breed dog, the type most often found in cars around here. I didn't know it was a problem until a neighbor mentioned it to me. I wasn't going to leave my dog in the car anyway, but she wanted to warn me just in case.
ETA: I just had another thought. A person may assume they are running into a store for "just a minute" but circumstances beyond their control may extend that time, at the cost of their animal's life. Every second that car is getting hotter and hotter. Not worth the chance.

No. We don't ever leave the dog in the car, period. If she's in the car, someone is with her.

No. No children or dogs left unattended in a car - ever.

I would never leave an animal unattended in the car regardless of the weather. But lots of people do it here when the temps are in the 70s to low 80s. They park in the shade, leave the windows down a couple of inches and are gone 5 minutes or less. I see it all the time where I work and it is no big deal, I watch the animals closely and have yet to see one in distress.

No, duh. And 75 degrees outside? I don't remember the magic formula for inside temps of the car, but it's waaaaay hotter than that inside a car. Stupid people with their beloved pets...

No. I went to go take my cat to the vet for a blood test and then I needed one thing at the grocery store. Instead of leaving her in the carrier while I ran in, I just asked the vet if they could hang on to her for a few minutes while I ran to the store. If they had said no, I would have dropped her off at home first and gone back. I did this at my pet store. It is a small little family-owned store where I buy my grain-free small breed dog food. There is a new food place that went in next door to them. After buying some stuff at the pet store and going out to my car to leave, the smell from that restaurant wafted over and was too irresistible. I have never ever left my dog with anyone before. But the pet store owner is so awesome that I felt comfortable with her and asked if I could park my pup with her to go grab some take out. I offered to pick some up for her too, but she declined. If she had been unable to take him, say the store was full of customers or something, I would not have asked and just not eaten. And my car was parked right in front of the window of the restaurant. I could have kept my eyes on my car the whole time, but it still felt just wrong.

Nope ... I would never take my 93 lb mutt shopping to begin with ... We were in an Idaho Walmart last month and saw TWO dogs in the store ... yes, better than being in a hot car but this is a place that sells food

One of our local grocery stores puts posters up ion their doors reminding you that it's too hot for your dog in the car.

I only take my dog to stores when I go shopping for him. Otherwise, he stays at home.

No, I've only left my dog "alone" once and it was to help dh move something heavy down the dock to the car which was in full view of the car. My dog is anxious and sprayed that nasty smelling stuff in the car. She has never been left in the car alone again.

Would you leave your child in the car under these conditions? No ? Then don't leave a pet either.

No. If it's 75 outside, the temp inside the car will rise quickly once the car is shut off. If I wouldn't want to be in a situation myself, there's no way I'm putting my pet in the situation. I can open the door or turn on the ac if I start getting hot - a pet has no way of escaping the heat.

Why would you leave your dog in the car with the windows cracked.... Roll them down and let the dog have air. I have 1 chihuahua that is 11 pounds and 1 yorkie that is 13 pounds and they would never let anybody near my car. in fact my chihuahua bit a friend of mine because he put his hand in the car. I told him not to.... But he did and she nailed him.... didn't draw blood but she could have... I was standing right there and said her name and she let go of his hand. My yorkie is so crazy that he goes nuts when in a parked car. No body would be stupid enough to get near the car with him in it. my 3 pounder usually goes in the store with me if I have him with me. I don't leave any of them in the car unless the weather is cooler and the windows are rolled down...
I think cars should be made with air conditioners that keep the car cool even with the engine off. Like solar powered or battery operated.

Yes, I would. If the car is in the shade, the temp won't climb any higher. I'll blast the AC so that the car is cooler and make a quick run. Especially in the winter when the angle of the sun is lower. I train Emma in busy areas so that she has the distractions, so she is often out with me.

Oh, *hell*, no. In fact, Dear Hubby and I were in the grocery store parking lot last week and saw a dog in a similar situation, and we were wall, "When can we legally break out the windows and rescue the dog?!" We need to call the county sheriff and find out what the law is. People are horrid to their pets, and it's so upsetting.

I have had to before. Didn't want to, but I traveled a lot with my dog to visit my parents. I always had to stop for gas on the way (long trip) and sometimes I would have to use the bathroom. I would walk him while the gas tank was filling up and leave him under the shaded area in the car with the doors locked by the gas pump while I would run inside and use the bathroom. I hated it but it was my only option. I always stopped at the same place because it wasn't busy and I knew I could get in and out quickly (5-6 min). He typically laid on the floor and the air had been on so it was still relatively cool but still I didn't like to do it. Luckily I only had to stop once each way. It is different with a child, you can take a child inside the store with you. They won't let you bring a dog inside. If they would have let me, I would have brought him in when I had to use the bathroom. Why would you leave your dog in the car with the windows cracked.... Roll them down and let the dog have air. I have 1 chihuahua that is 11 pounds and 1 yorkie that is 13 pounds and they would never let anybody near my car. I think cars should be made with air conditioners that keep the car cool even with the engine off. Like solar powered or battery operated. That is great that your dogs are protective like that but my dog was super friendly and would go with anyone. If I had left the windows down, he would have just jumped out and followed me. I totally agree with you about needing something to keep the car cool even when the engine isn't running. That would be good with or without pets. It would be nice to go get in your car after work and it would be cool. I wish there was something like that.

I haven't. I just got home from three days of driving from Michigan to Texas by myself, with 3 dogs. I did have to stop one time and run into a McDonald's to use the bathroom. I really don't know what the alternative would be to leaving them in the car with the windows cracked.
