Do you have styled bookshelves? Are your bookshelves for books only? Or do you incorporate other objects? How do you arrange / organize your books? Spent the evening moving stuff around in my living room so I have burning questions about how other people do things.

Books only. we have enough that it fills the shelves so there's no room for other things. I've thought about styling them, but then where would I put all the books I took down? Our large bookshelf is all kid books anyway and the kids would miss it if I took it away.
I did once have a shelf that was rainbow order because it worked as well as anything else. Most of them are either random or arranged by series. Which series is on which shelf is mostly a matter of which ones fit.

I don't have any bookshelves, but I would love to install built-ins for books and chotskies.

I put books in vertical stacks and then put the rest on the regular way. Then I put pictures or tchotchkes on top of the stacks of books or in front of the shelved books. The top of the bookshelf is for pottery and plants.

You can't really tell from this angle, but I do have knick-knacks between the stacks of books. This is an old library shelf dh got out of a dumpster! I didn't really "arrange" the books, just kind of stuck them where they would fit. I do have cook books together, travel books together, etc. but that's about all the thought I put into it. what the heck is up with my carpet? it doesn't really look like that!! lol

I have pics on my blog. I recently rearranged bookcases when I moved a piano.Pics under"My house" . Everything is stuff my kids make or buy for me. I don't think I have ever purchased a dust catcher. Except nativities from eBay.

Most are books only though I use a couple of individual shelves for DVDs. Books all standing upright. Other items on top of a couple of low bookshelves. I organise my books by topics eg biographies, history, crime novels etc.

Two built in bookcases. Sorted by categories. One bookcase is pleasure reading. The other is resource like science, history, dictionaries... There are a few little things on some shelves in front of the books. I've got at least 2,000 books so there is no room for bigger decoratives.

Ikea shelves, all books are alphabetized, some other objects added for visual interest in a couple spots and on top. My "formal" living room is now a library.

I don't have traditional bookshelves, I never could find any that I like. For example, I have an old pie safe that I removed the curtain things that someone used to cover the inside so it is completely open except for the structural pieces of the doors. There are books, photos and whatnots scattered inside w/the books horizontal and vertical, stuff in front of books, on top of books...
Another example is an old barrister case, with the books stacked, stood up and pieces and parts of my life interspersed on top of or next to stacks.

We have two bookcases which flank our fireplace. The top shelves of each one is filled with decor and the bottom shelves are filled with books.

It depends where they are. The living room and master bedroom built-ins are styled, books grouped by color and objects in between.
Playroom/ loft books are sorted by type, but shelves are deep and cute things sit in front. So I guess they're somewhat styled. All others are straight in the shelves, more utilitarian sorted by type, unless they also hold bins.
Style gives way to need for storage around here, more often than in my dream design.

We have some built-ins in our family room. They are filled with books, but I have a few framed photos and tchotchkes sharing space with the books.
ETA: I do not organize the books alphabetically. They're in there randomly unless they're part of a series---I do put those in order.

I have a tall bookcase in my living room that's stuffed with books. They're neatly placed, but not arranged in any particular order. There's no room for anything else in there. It's time to cull them because I can't fit any more on the shelves. The culled books go to the Friends of the Library sale (they collect all year.) I made that my book space on purpose -- I could easily fill my entire house with books. Good thing I use the library or I'd be broke.
I have knick-knacks elsewhere on flat surfaces, not on shelves.

My shelves contain mostly books. I have a few decorative items on the shelves, but I don't like the look of a lot of little knickknacks on the shelves. My nonfiction is arranged by subject (travel, how-to, etc.). My fiction is arranged by author. I have hundreds of books and that way I can easily find the book I am looking for.

Too many books to have any style. LOL They're spilling off the shelves and stacked on the floor.

We recently did a reno on our family room and added a wall of bookshelves. I wanted them to house our books, obviously, but I wanted it to look a little stylish too. I searched pinterest for a few ideas and here are a couple of pictures I found that helped me. Oh and this link has a few ideas too.

My book shelves in the formal living room look like the first picture that RoundTwo posted, except that there are more books on my shelves. It's visible from the front door and I wanted it to look like I had planned it. They are just Billy shelves from IKEA, but we got the extended shelves and the unit fills a wall.
The other book shelves in the house are packed. No chatchkes, just books. Mostly arranged by subject and series, but I can't guarantee that in the kids's rooms.

I wish I could give myself the go ahead to convert my dining room into another space. I suppose if it wasn't such a beautiful room it would be easier to get change.

Clever idea on the pie safe; and, I've always loved the look of old barrister cases.

I like to break up the books with baskets for magazines, framed photos and a few mementos. I prefer a clean, uncluttered look with some empty shelf space.

Only books here. We have so many bookshelves as it is, and they are all full of books (sorted by broad section - fiction, non-fiction, travel, reference, children's, etc., and then alphabetical by author's last name within each section). If we styled them, we'd need way more bookshelves than we have room for. Besides, I think books are pretty beautiful the way they are.

I like decorative objects interspersed with a few books per grouping. That's not how my bookcase looks at the moment, but it's how I would like it to look.

My bookshelf stays hidden in my basement. My son would make a mess of them. When they were out in the open, it was for books and organized by category. If there were some blank spots, I'd maybe be a photo frame or some little object to take up space.

They just hold books-no room for anything else. I think books are decorative all on their own, so I'm happy with it.
