We have a mix of plantation shutters and blinds. I made curtains to replace the verical blinds on the slider and love them. Some windows have a valances so when the blinds are pulled up I don't see them. IMHO, the blind is for practical sun blocking/privacy purposes and the curtain/valance for decor.

I am glad this question was asked. Because the old owner took all of the shades and blinds with him, when he left. I have curtains in the bedrooms and my craft room and only valances in the family room and kitchen. I have been looking at getting the 2 inch wood blinds; but now I am also going to look at plantation shutters.

I hate curtains/drapes. I've had them in other houses but they are dust collectors (I live in a place with lots of dust storms) and feel old fashioned to me. We also live in a very hot climate and drapes feel/look hot to me. I agree totally! Curtains and drapes definitely have an old fashioned feel about them. I finally got rid of the drapes in the entrance of my house and replaced them with white timber blinds, and it instantly lifted the appearance from a tired 30 year old house to a more modern house. I cannot wait to get rid of every other curtain in my house and replace with blinds - when I have a spare $5000 or thereabouts. I want to get double view roller blinds (sheer underneath and blockout on the top). ETA: I should have mentioned that even though I love the look of my white timber blinds, they are a BITCH to clean! DSO wanted to get more for the lounge room but I have vetoed that idea, and will get roller blinds instead.

AussieMeg if you are doing rollers, make sure you get a few quotes. I got Spotlight and their quote for 2 custom rollers and the wide panels for the sliding door was about $1900 (after 30% discount!). I got a quote from a small local business that a friend had used and they were $1080 and we are so happy with the result. I had decided to go with him anyway if the price was similar or a bit more but I couldn't believe how much cheaper than the supposed leader was.

So here is another question- if you have blinds, how do your Windows open. I mean, do your Windows go up/down, crank outs, sliders, etc. We have crank outs, so blinds have never really made sense.

I have honeycomb blinds on most windows, and additional drapes on some for a more finished look. They are good for keeping the heat/cold out.
I don't think they are 100% current/trendy, but they work for us. I don't care for the plastic slat blinds or the vertical blinds. We also got rid of all of our valances from 15 years ago.
Target and Ikea have some very nice options that look fresh and modern, especially with metal rings/rods.

They are alive and well in the south! Mostly the 2" white slatted blinds. Our old house had 2" wood ones on all the windows when we bought them and I took down a few of them and had others pulled all the way up pretty much all the time. That is how we showed the house too and we had multiple offers within days of being on the market. We looked at a bunch of houses and honestly I can't even remember which ones had blinds or didn't, window treatments had zero influence on if we bought a house or not. Put them up if you want them and I would err on the side of safe white, 2" slats for maximum audience appeal but don't feel like you have to have *any* blinds solely for resale purposes unless you talk to a realtor familiar with your area. We just moved into a new house with no window coverings so while they might be a nice to have, they aren't a make it or break it for some buyers. In fact, I like that we get to decide what we will put up and not feel tied to perfectly serviceable blinds that were already installed. We will probably do 2" white blinds across all the windows in rooms across the front of the house for cohesion from the outside but a mix of other blinds, curtains, bare windows everywhere else.

That's funny about people commenting on drapes being dust collectors. Because that is exactly why I hate blinds. They always look dirty, and dusty. Unless you clean them every wk. Curtains ya just give them a shake, or vacuum, throw in wash.

Oh dear. I have blinds AND curtains. Timber blinds in natural and block out curtains over them. While I love timber blinds they don't keep the living room and bedroom as dark as we like it, so we added blockout curtains in there we can close when sleeping and watching movies.

And yeah they are dust collectors. I shut them, use a vacuum attachment to clean them and call it good. Quickest way to clean them. Once a year I do a proper clean with wood conditioning cleaner.

My first thought was wood blinds--but is that still done? We want to put the house on the market in the next couple of years, so I want something that will look modern and add value. Having lived with wood blinds for close to ten years, I would never get them again. If you like the 2" or 2.5" slat look, the vinyl version look just as good and are easier to keep clean. Our wood blinds splintered in high humidity areas, they were eaten the heck up by bugs and random birds in the garage, and they yellowed. I don't think they are worth the extra cost and I certainly wouldn't make the investment if you plan to sell in a couple of years.

I have white wooden blinds throughout my house, even on the narrow window next to my front door. The ones on the high window in my living room are on remote to open and close. I love them and wouldn't be without them. The only place I have something different is in my bedroom, where I have the cellular shades that are bottom up or top down. (I keep the bottom closed most of the time)

Blinds are on my windows! And if they are outdated, so be it, but they're super convenient for me, so I'm sticking with them.
