I don't quite understand that last sentence? Hoop earrings have been found in many cultures over the times, so why should only women with a darker skin colour be allowed to have an opinion? Because the way I understand your response, white women aren't allowed an opinion on the subject. (If I misunderstood, I apologise).

Every time I get notifications for an old thread I think " Olan strikes again". I see I wasn't wrong. Do you gave anything to contribute besides bumping old shit?

Because the way I understand your response, white women aren't allowed an opinion on the subject. (If I misunderstood, I apologise). You did misunderstand. I don't care about hoop earrings or who wears them so I am the wrong black woman to poll anyway. The thread is titled "Women of Color: Thoughts on Hoop Earrings". She asked a question to "Women of Color" to a board of mostly white women. So the conversation becomes how white women think black women behave and what terms they should accept to describe themselves. @geoegiapea said something in another thread and someone got upset and called out my assumption that no one would challenge the socially unacceptable comment she made. Well If you read back a couple pages you will see the woman from my hometown again making racially tone deaf comments. Also note who agreed with the statement. Unchallenged. Am I correct in understanding most people take offense to my participation because I am pointing out socially unacceptable lines of thought? I know the other issue is this assumption that I am angry and hate all white peoples so I will try to find a way to put this link in my signature. I think its important to read. I've been a member here for at least a decade I've listened to pea perspectives for many many many years but now when I share my own the pea treatment of me changes. www.blackpast.org/1981-audre-lorde-uses-anger-women-responding-racism

I am hearing that you don't value my participation here. Why is that? How do you view my participation both now and in previous years? I don't get any notifications when someone bumps my threads or quotes me. I would love to though.

Thanks for sharing, that was an interesting read. I will need to read it a few more times to fully absorb it. Seems like it could have been written last week let alone over 30 years ago. I think this is very true: "Most women have not developed tools for facing anger constructively" and I wonder how we learn to do that and what it looks like in practice. I also wonder how this plays against the trope of the "angry black woman" - how do we avoid using using that to devalue and dehumanize, and still acknowledge and respond to the anger so well described here? And here you go again, looking for ugly where there is none. And here you go again, bringing the ugly. I don't quite understand that last sentence? Hoop earrings have been found in many cultures over the times, so why should only women with a darker skin colour be allowed to have an opinion? Because the way I understand your response, white women aren't allowed an opinion on the subject. (If I misunderstood, I apologise). I didn't read it that way, more as pointing out that if someone really wants to know what women of colour think about an issue, this isn't exactly the best place to ask. (ETA - just to note, a bunch of other replies were posted while I was typing)

I think that often you bump an old thread to add a comment that doesn't even make sense in that thread instead of just starting a new thread to actually discuss the topic you want to discuss. I don't understand how/why you think that tactic is effective. I don't think it makes sense and I find it annoying. As for how I view your participation on this board - you drop in sporadically to make aggressive comments about race and then you disappear for weeks or months. I don't really consider you a regular contributing member. I don't remember you from the old board.

I found that link in my Notes App. Oddly enough I happened upon it this morning as I was looking for a confirmation code. An entry from January and I myself hadn't visited the link until this morning. Really helpful read for me as well. Just yesterday I was denying my anger and only owning it so someone else could take personality responsibility.

I almost always angrily attempt to explain it. I can also see where my comments could be viewed as aggressive. As for my level of participation my daily posting has waned and the political climate has changed. There was a very long period were I was a regular contributing member. It does become difficult to share recipes when you can see threads like these.

How in the world are you guys able to tell who is black or white and how many of each there are on here? Granted, some are easy to tell, because of their pictures. Not that I give two shits what color anyone is on here but the comments about this being a mostly white woman board made me wonder how you know?

I'm not sure how long you've been a member but I've always known the board was 90% white women. I just found out a pea dentifies as black so of course I can't claim to know *or speak for* every single black pea but my guess is there are no more than a dozen. Even when the viewership was much higher at the old 2peas the number was the same.

This Mexican American woman does not care if a person wears big hoop earrings or traces their lips in dark lipliner, or plucks all their eyebrows and draws them back in. Just be kind to others. That's really all that matters, isn't it?

A friend of mine (beautiful and blonde) went to Mexico on vacation. She posted a picture on FB of herself and her daughters wearing Mexican dresses. This American who happens to be of Mexican descent thought they looked lovely. They thought the dresses were beautiful (and they are), and they wore them.
Another friend of ours lost her mind over this supposed act of cultural appropriation.
I think hoop earrings existed long before our modern racial designations were invented, and I think this argument is laughable.

Note that she posed this question to women of color as if we are actually equally represented here. i'm not sure why black women have to be equally represented to still have an opinion as long as there are black women here - why shouldn't the question be asked/answered gina

My first pair of earrings, in 1953 were hoops. I wore them every day during high school. Never had another pair until I was an adult. I may self identify with my marginal Native American heritage but i look totally white. The challenge by those college girls is just absurd and makes them look uneducated. Just a ploy to get noticed. Kind of attention whorish. You clearly rock the possum look!

The peas hate it when I like their comments but the alternative is bumping the threads. burningfeather I know you were concerned with my "friends" visiting the boards. They've all agreed if/when they participate to creating a sign in name that includes their own screen name hyphenated by my screen name.

I've worn hoop earrings practically everyday for the past 30+ years. I have never given a thought that since I'm a white girl I'm not supposed to wear them. Who even comes up with this stuff. I wear what I feel comfortable in, clothes or jewlery. Even if they are "so out of style" Lol you gotta love her. I do. She sounds like a kindred spirit to me, and she's genuine to HER SELF. That's what's important.

I just want to say that I have wanted a gold pair of hoops for a very long time and I'm going to buy myself a pair for my birthday this week. I have an old silvertone pair from ages ago that look so good on me with my round face and layered haircut. (Nope, I'm not kidding...they look good! Maybe because they give some definition to my face. My stud earrings definitely don't.)
