Hoping this won't effect us when we travel to Hilton Head in June. We're in MI and take 75 down to 16 and over to Savannah/Hilton Head. Even if not directly, we'll have more traffic on our route I would think. Obviously it's much worse for those that live in the area. I can't imagine as Atlanta traffic is already crazy! Why wouldn't you go to Charlotte via I-77, then over to I-26, then down I-95 to Hilton Head?

Too curvy, hilly, foggy etc. Then on top of that we got stuck in a two hour traffic jam outside of Charlotte. My husband said never again. I agree, I hated all the curves and mountain climbs (pretty but stressful). I am admittedly a very nervous passenger so that way wasn't good for marital harmony.

Breaking (bad) news: WSB just broke that GDOT confirmed that 85 South was also compromised due to the fire (heat) and will have to be replaced. So umm, all 12-ish lanes. This won't happen quickly. I hadn't heard that yet, but honestly, with the heat of that fire, I can't see how the Southbound lanes would've NOT been compromised. Several in our office "reverse commute", living in the city and driving north to the office. Fortunately, our office is closed on Fridays, so they've got several days to let the dust settle and plan new routes accordingly. Yep same here - 4/5 on my team live down there (and our office is in Alpharetta). One is on vacation, 3 are traveling for work, and one left his apartment then went back home to work because the surface streets were jammed. My boss drove over a median in his truck in order to be able to go a different way since he couldn't get on 85 (he lives in Decatur).

I doubt it will be clear by then, but if you're in Michigan, I wouldn't come through Atlanta to go to Hilton Head. Isn't that several hours out of your way? I would think 77 through Charlotte would be faster?

A 2 hour traffic jam outside of Atlanta doesn't sound any better to me, but we'll see how this plays out!

Plus we go through Atlanta early on Sat morning. Last year we didn't have traffic problems, we sailed through, just all those lanes made me nervous. Now this year, well, definitely could be different, yikes!

You definitely have to plan when you will get to the Charlotte area, and you don't want to be there around rush hour but otherwise it's a great route. We always plan all major travel around major cities to make sure we are never there around rush hour no matter what town. I would do Charlotte over Atlanta any day. And sorry you hated the hills and curves. That's how I live so I am used to it and love it. A lot of people speed which is scary but I just drive in the right lane and drive the speed limit. Makes it a nice drive. Just let the crazies go on ahead.

disneypal it might not take months. Remember a few years ago another fire damaged the interstate at 285 and 400, I think, and made a huge hole in the bridge. It didn't take months to fix that. I hope you are right - plus I know they will want to repair this ASAP. The difference with this one though is that the WHOLE bridge it gone, it isn't just a hole. Plus they said a large part will need to be replaced, not just the part that collapsed because there is damage to more of the bridge due to the fire. I am sure they will put HIGH priority on this since it is such a major stem on the highway. Save

For those that normally travel through this way and plan to take 285, just keep in mind that it's under construction near 75 and opening day for the Braves at their new stadium (at 285/75) is in 14 days. Plan accordingly PLUS - there is a pre-season game there tonight

But tonight's game is just A-List (season tix holders) and invited sponsors/guests, so it should 'only' be 1/2 full. I'm trying to decide what time to leave the office to head down. I was thinking 4...my boss said 2. haha!

You might want to make an alternate route. There was a fire under part of I85 near the downtown area. That part collapsed. So that portion is completely impassable. All alternate routes will be even crazier. I85 CollapseCould Y'all update me on the situation? Atlanta is on our route may 3. Should we avoid it?

Could Y'all update me on the situation? Atlanta is on our route may 3. Should we avoid it? No need to avoid but just be aware - if you are traveling I-85, you will need to go around it by taking 285 (the bypass) which (depending on traffic) will add about 30 minutes to your trip. If you are traveling I-75, you shouldn't have too much trouble - it wasn't impacted. Traffic is a bit heavier on some of the other roads since folks can't take I-85. Since you are traveling during the week - try to hit Atlanta between about 10 am and 2 pm if you can. (Or before 6 am or after 7 pm) Hope that helps. SaveSave
