I was bitten by this bug last year but have had a lot of not pleasant stuff going on in life and haven't had time to really be on the lookout for pieces. I bought one piece at an antique store and then dh got me a few more for Christmas at the same place.
I know it's cheaper to buy them at thrift stores, garage sales etc. But do you all have any tips? I haven't been to many garage sales since I was a child. Occasionally I will stop. I told dd we should check them out this summer but she pointed out that I might not have much luck finding Pyrex as most garage sales start on Thursday/Friday mornings. I'm at work by 7:00 am on those days. Is she right?
I've signed up for FB groups but most seem to be a place where people show what they've gotten and swap. Not a place to share info/ask questions. And how do swaps work?
Any tips/suggestions are appreciated. I'm also interested in some Fire King and Hazel Atlas pieces.
ETA-I have a very small house and hate clutter, so I can't get too crazy. I figure I will focus on just 3-4 patterns that I truly love with an occasional piece of others. I'm sure it won't be easy to find without paying too much, so that should help.

I think in the Midwest they start Thurs/Fri. Tag and estate sales (the real ones where people are selling the entire contents of the house) sometimes start on Fridays here. Have fun on the hunt OP!

I did hit the Goodwill in our town this weekend and a Salvation Army in another, but no luck. Though I did find some bowls that match our Pfaltzgraff pattern that we got years ago. A few bowls have been broken so that was nice to find.

Yep, Thursday garage sales are completely unheard of here, and Friday ones are rare. You may see one or two one week and then none at all the next week. In my area Saturday is THE reigning garage sale day. Even Sundays are rare. When soccer season starts for us I bemoan how many prime Saturday hours I miss, LOL! If that is the case for your area, though, keep an eye out for rummage sales, church sales, school sales, etc., where there are lots of people donating to one single sale. Or, hit a weekend flea market, where again, you'll see stuff from oodles of people all in one location. And like you said, you can also check out the area thrift stores. I follow on FB one thrift store not terribly far from that posts pictures of new things in their shop, particularly anything special. Recently they posted Pyrex. They ask higher than garage sale prices, but you have the convenience of knowing exactly when and where you can go find the item.

Try antique sales. Not sure where in MI you are, but I highly recommend going to Allegan at least once this year.
Otherwise, hit up the antique stores. There are lots of them in MI.

Our thrift shops are open until 7:00 and one even until 9:00. I found a lot of the glassware I collect by making a weekly evening trek through the store while DS was at a meeting nearby. I see vintage Pyrex each week.
Don't be discouraged by missing the prime garage sale time. It's just as sweet building a collection slowly as it is finding a haul. The hunt is half the fun!

Garage sales in my part of the country is Friday being the best day and Saturday is okay.. (Some people drag into Sundays)
I am always looking for Fiesta (P86 or really anything).. the only time I had luck at a garage sale was about 7 years ago. I hit up one sale and she had over 30 pieces sitting out and I got it all for $20!! It wasn't the older stuff but it was a HUGE find.

The biggest garage sale day is Friday. I know when I have a garage sale I make about 80-90% of my money on Friday. It's hardly worth opening on Saturday and never worth opening on Sunday.

I've had very little luck with garage sales or goodwill type stores. The only ones that I've gotten what I consider good deals on were if I haggled with a store owner or if a certain booth in an antique/resale mall had a % off sale going. I paid more than I should have for my pink pyrex but the rest were okay deals.

I did hit up an estate sale that had a bunch of Fiesta but it was all the same color (not one that was my favorite) but she was asking a decent price for it all (I think $100 for 8 place setting, plus some extra serving dishes) I tried to buy just a couple of pieces but she wouldn't break up the set. Bummer for me.. I feel the same way about smoking/drugs.. one time and that would be my downfall!! lol

Etsy has a fair amount of Pyrex. It is probably higher priced and there is shipping but it could be fun looking.
And of course EBay.
Where I live garage sales are on the weekends and most flea markets.

Allegan is worth the trip if you aren't on the west side of the state. I would just keep your eyes out. I have found many of my pieces at garage sales, antique malls, friends, and Goodwill. Just keep an eye out and enjoy the hunt eta: Use Etsy and Ebay to look at the different pieces for the patterns so you have an idea of what is out there. I have gotten a piece or two off Etsy to complete a collection (mostly the coordinating Corelle pieces). What patterns are you looking for? I have Spring Daisy and Butterfly Gold.

I was lucky to be someone who was collecting Pyrex before it became a hot collectible. It was fun. I found all sorts of great pieces at garage sales and thrift shops for cheap. Then Country Living published an article and ruined everything. I have a lot and it became a storage issue - I have my kitchen at home and at the lake. I just kind of quit.
You will have better luck & enjoy it more if you decide that any time you find something cheap that you'll buy it, no matter what the pattern. I have a few Early American bowls that I got really cheap- not a very attractive set, but I use them as my 4th of July serving bowls because of the eagle on them. They're perfect for that. I have lots of different bowl sets and some casserole sets, but lots of random pieces too. I'm lucky that I happen to love the common patterns of Butterfly Gold and Spring Blossom. I have a lot of those. But i have some cool pink, turquoise, and promotional items. I'd also recommend that you be open to buying cool Fire King pieces as well. When I quit looking specifically for Pyrex I started picking up floral frying & sauce pans from the 60s and 70s. I leave those at the lake and I love cooking with them. My lake kitchen is filled with so many cool kitschy things. People always comment on it and I love that.
Good luck! I love my Pyrex and my daughters have already told me the pieces they want when they have their own homes and they're going to get them.
eta - my best find ever was the complete pink Gooseberry Cinderella set for $10 at a sale about a block from my house. Perfect shape. That would never happen now. I used to buy a lot of things for a couple bucks or less. I'd also recommend that when you see the clear glass lids for cheap that you get them. Casseroles often show up without lids and I was always glad that I had a little stash of lids that would go with them.

Try Craigslist for Post86 Fiesta - especially older (not vintage) colors. Lots of people want to sell their whole set in bulk (and it's astonishing how many people have one-color sets), but I've bought by-the-piece and was very successful selling by-the-piece. Of course, the prices are all over the place. Search for FIESTWARE and FIESTA. You'll get different results. Ignore the Ford Fiestas.

Thanks everyone. For those in MI what's so special about Allegan? Are there lots of flea markets there or something? I'm just south of Flint so that's a bit of a drive.
I don't mind the hunt, I think that's part of the fun. But I'd like to actually FIND something once in a while too lol. And I think my favorites are the more popular ones which will make it harder. I LOVE the pink and turquoise sets and patterns (snowflake, daisy, butterprint etc). Though there are some others that are kind of appealing too (not sure of names, I think spring blossom and butterfly gold?). And some of the promotional patterns.
I don't have much space so want to stick to the ones I truly love but we'll see. I see on FB lots of trading, do people buy ones they don't love just to swap?
I do love some of the Fire King. Those seem much more affordable so I hope to find that too. And Hazel Atlas.

I live in New England and Friday and Saturday are the big days here. Friday is the best day as a general rule. Sundays are now a total dud.
Don't discount finding something great on the second day or near the end of the sale. Sometimes people expect premium prices for a premium product and if it doesn't look like it's going to sell you can sometimes get it for a great bargain.
Good luck in your search.

That makes me think it's pretty common. I got a Butterprint set of Cinderella bowls for about $20 several years ago when an antique shop was closing and was selling all of their stuff for 75% off. I bought a few things that day. I have never taken part in a swap, but I've seen groups that do it on Facebook. I haven't looked at those in a long time though. I do think in order to find things now you have to make a point to hit the thrift and antique shops regularly. Now is definitely the season to get out there and look. Another thing to do is let people know you are looking for it. I've had people pick up items for me when they saw them cheap at sales or when someone was putting together a box of things to give to Goodwill. SaveSave

ellen, I've noticed some of the skillets recently on my hunts. It made me think a new generation must be downsizing, or passing on, because a sudden increase in availability. I remember those from my childhood and teens. They would be fun to collect and use!

I remember those from my childhood and teens. They would be fun to collect and use! I was really excited when I bought a set of these pans for $5 - brand new, still in the box. An older woman was selling them. They are so pretty. I have another set of enamel floral pans that someone across the lake was selling. They belonged to her mother-in-law who had recently passed away. I have found that a lot of the retro pans that I have bought in an old lady's garage are better for cooking than the things that I bought new. cool pansSaveSave

I have collected Pyrex for years and I have sold it in my booth at a Collectible as well. I will tell you thrift stores have been my best source. And thrift stores in well off towns and neighborhoods are the best of the best. Depending on where you live Pyrex mania has died down and so prices are more reasonable now. There are some pieces and colors that are going to be hard to find and pricier - Think the red, blue, green, yellow bowl set and anything pink, black or turquoise.
Having said that thrift stores, estate sales, yard sales and auctions are good sources for buyng.

I see quite a bit of vintage Pyrex at Goodwill stores. The fun of the hunt at Goodwill (at least round here) is that they bring out carts of stock all day long. The best and most desirable pieces I've ever found - or just missed - have been on a cart just rolled out of the back room. It kind of evens out the likelihood of finding a treasure even if you can't get out at the crack of dawn.
