For some reason I didn't want to post this on 2 Peas, probably because there would have been eleventy million posts about PL already, and you'd be sick of newbie PL-ers asking questions. But I feel I can ask this here on the new board without any eyerolls (hopefully!). I am VERY late to the PL party. I recently ordered my first lot of stuff (album, core kit, pocket pages) so I could finally (after nearly 10 years!) do my son's baby album. I had done a ton of journaling about his first few years but could not decide what format I wanted to scrap it in. I thought PL would be perfect. They made it look so easy, just print out your photos, stick them in the pockets, write some journaling on the cards and you're done! However..... It is taking me a LOT longer than what I thought. I STILL have to go through the photos on my computer first, decide if I want to use portrait or landscape, 6x4 or 3x2, crop to 3x2 if necessary, make sure I can fill a page with the right number of portrait and landscape pics, THEN make sure the photos for the next month actually fit into the format at the back of the page I have just done. It's not supposed to be that hard is it?

I totally get where you are coming from! It does seem harder than everyone makes it seem. I think it comes down to having to fit everything into each section properly. My biggest issue with it is then being stuck with the orientation for the back side layout. I'm not sure if my frustration means I should just stick with traditional or that I need to keep at it until it becomes just as familiar as traditional?!

I'm glad I'm not the only one!
I forgot to mention that I really don't like the style A and D pocket pages - the main ones that most people seem to use. I bought a pack of 60 which was probably a waste of money because I am using other ones more.

It's so funny because one of the things we are talking about in our podcast this Monday is that Project Life is just not as simple as it is made out to be. It takes PLANNING for me to get it done the way I want. It's not about embellishing - it's mainly about picture sizes like you said. My bestie has given up on it but I still hear it calling me. I'm a planner and linear design person by nature so I can make it work. But you're right - it's not supposed to be that difficult!

I like pages with a good mix of portrait and landscape and square. I think from memory design Q and Z and W - I bought the Small Variety Pack 4 and 6 and have used more of them.

Several people I know print out the same photos in 4x6 & 3x4 so when they get ready to go - they have options. It is more $ but they don't have to worry & take the time to figure it out before hand.

One way to make it much easier on yourself is to pick a page protector design and stick to it.

I had that experience at first too... I think there's such an assumption that it's simple and easy because that's how it's marketed - everything you need, you just add photos, doesn't take time away from life... A lot of people seem to be changing up how they use PL... So not doing it weekly, but maybe doing it monthly, or doing a binder for each season... I wanted to do PL because I wanted a timeline/chronology, sort of like a journal but in a scrappy way... I ended up on doing a two page spread for each month, and adding in a two page spread for special events or outings... For the monthly spread, I don't worry if the horizontal picture that fits in the pocket first was actually taken after the vertical picture next to it... Because that whole spread is about the month I don't worry about the chronology within the month (I date each photo/the ones where dates are important)... My opinion about PL is that you have to make sacrifices for the 'convenience' or format... I chose to let go of the exact chronology as long as everything on the two pages was within the same month... Other people sacrifice time each day/week to organize and plan where their pictures will go... I think it's just finding the sacrifice that you're willing to make...
Some things that helped me simplify were choosing one main pocket page style, and one alternate... I use the popular two 4x6 horizontals, four 4x3 verticals, and two 4x6 horizontals (Design A?) as my main layout... Glancing through my photos I saw that I took a lot of vertically oriented photos, and I knew I wanted wanted my pages to be photo heavy... I print the majority of my photos as 4x3s and fill up the 4x3 pockets (8), and can put two in each of the 4x6 pockets... So I can fit 24 photos into that style of spread... I will use at least one 4x6 for a title and journalling card, but even then I can include 22 photos... That's almost a photo a day... I do print my 4x3s slightly smaller than 4x3 - it lets me attach them to cards/paper, and give me room to add embellishments around them...
Another thing that helped me was to break my photos into sections... I'm doing a two month long trip in separate PL albums and spend time organizing my photos for that... I divided them into months, then weeks, then days, and then into any highlight/featured activity that I knew I'd want to devote more space too... Once I had the photos broken down into groups like that, it really wasn't bad to figure out how many photos I'd be using, if they were mostly vertical or horizontal, if there were any I wanted larger (4x6 or 8x6 then cut to fit multiple pockets), or if there was any memorabilia I wanted to add into that section... I didn't divide each section, but you could make a 12x12 LO to act as a divider, or introduction to the next section... If you end with a one page spread, use the 12x12 to end that section on one side and another 12x12 to start the next section... If you end with a two page spread, make one 12x12 LO and either glue, staple, or sew that 12x12 pp to the back of the last page of the PL spread...
When it came time to actually start with the photos and printing, I'd edit one section at a time... I'd either print up that section when I was done so that it was ready for when I was in the mood to scrap and not in the mood to do the prep work, or I'd save up a couple sections and get them printed at once... I got too worn out trying to sit and edit all of them at one time - it felt never ending...
As far as making sure the next month's photos fit into the format at the back of the page, you could always switch to a different pocket design and glue/sew the two together... Or you could use that back page for some miscellaneous journalling - nothing specific to the pictures necessarily, but things like the little everyday moments that you remember... Or write a 'looking back now' type of journalling - habits or quirks you saw in that first year that ten years on you still see in him...
I saw a video a long time ago, maybe when PL style things were just starting out, and the woman would arrange the cards in the pockets before picking photos or anything else... She sort of filled everything in and I remember how 'done' it looked just by doing that... When I get stuck I'll do that... Create an arrangement of cards that I think look good together and then figure out which photos could be added/swapped out for cards... It's definitely a mind trick - you feel like the pockets are full and that it's halfway done even though it's not...lol Maybe doing a couple of spreads that way, and then printing up a month of photos and just seeing how you like to fit the photos in will help you learn how photo heavy you like your spreads, if you want to change how you've sectioned things, if other pocket page designs would suit the project better... It's overwhelming to have a bunch of photos and cards and empty pockets...
It's definitely hard until you get into a workflow that feels natural... It actually reminded me of trying to learn anything Apple where it's supposed to be intuitive but it's just sometimes absolutely not intuitive...lol

Ah- the dreaded backside.! I used PL for my granddaughters' graduation albums & found that i just "mixed the order" so I could back with a similar layout , but I agree it would take tons of planning in a chronological scrapbook. I have had to reprint lots iof photos & since I do it at Walgreens, I have spent lots of $$. I think I need a Selphy!

Thanks for the input everyone. DD was so excited when she saw me start on DS's album, she asked when I was going to start hers! So I'd better get the hang of it soon.
My dad has just come back from 6 weeks overseas (in Canada and the US) and I was thinking I might even do an album for his trip photos. I'm going to show him a few examples and see if he likes the format or whether he wants to do a plain old photo book. When I mentioned it to him he was quite keen on getting to use "real" photos rather than photo book prints.

I also only just started PL last year - I'm doing a baby album for my niece. I agree it does take quite a lot of planning. Plus, I don't even take my own photos - I rely on my brother and sister-in-law for that because they're in the UK. So I never know what orientation I'm going to get. Because of this, I use almost every variety of page protector you can think of and I do a lot of editing and printing customs sizes with iphoto. But actually, I like the variety. I think I'd go crazy if I used the same pages and kit all the time. One tip which someone gave me was to use a PL type approach i.e. lots of photos and cards, but to put them on a 12 x 12 in a standard page protector. Sounds much more flexible, though I haven't tried it yet.
But I am really enjoying the scrapping so have just started doing digital layouts for myself, so I have something for when I give the album away. I'm using some of Tracy Larsen's PL style templates and love them.

I've tried the divided page style and it wasn't for me, I didn't find it any easier. But I've seen a really nice solution to the "photos not fitting on the back side" dilemma. Make a regular page but do it in the PL style. You still use the PL products (or whatever breed you choose or DIY), and lay them onto a sheet of c\s. It goes into a normal page protector. Looks like 'the real thing' and you get to use any combo of photos you have.

I bought all the stuff and now just adding to my albums, It's great for me when i have ton of photos to do, Like daughters graduation and prom and her whole senior year, but still cant do exclusive PL still love playing with my stuff lol. PL takes a little more planning and tinkering, with 12x12 can layout and just add.

I don't think I would enjoy it as much if I didn't print my photos at home. That way I decide what photos I want in what size and then print them right then. Sometimes if I have a large number of pictures (like a vacation) I will preplan the whole thing and send them to Target or Walmart.

I tried, but it didn't work for me. I bought a bunch of pages too (I forget what letter they are) which I might try to sell. My problem is that I have actual printed photos, not digital, so getting them to fit in the pockets was a problem. This is for my Israel album which has been staring at me for ages. sigh...
So for now I have all the photos in an ordinary slip-in-the-pockets album, the kind that has a thin pocket in the middle of the page for some journaling. I've put all the photos in there, with some notes to say where they were taken. But for the actual album I think I'm just going to be better off going back to plain and simple CM style, almost as if I have PL pockets but just sticking the photos down on the page. Then I'll have enough room for the journaling. I'm calling it "Project Life Without the Pockets". lolol

I kind of ran into the same problem... Unless you take all your pics 4x6 horizontal, you kind of have to plan and figure out. I'm just starting my first PL album too, but my plan is to crop what I can to fit, I bought pages of a variety of designs, and I'll probably mix in some 12x12 layouts also. So I'll see how it goes. I probably wouldn't have done PL but I won a kit at CKC and then bought some stuff to go with it, and I thought the cards, ect. are cute. So we'll see how it goes. I've been staring at all the stuff layed out on my desk for two weeks trying to figure out how to get started.

I had that trouble too in the beginning. This is my third year now of PL. I've gotten into the habit of taking my photos landscape mostly. I take portrait with the intention of using them for 3x4 or ones I'll crop. In the beginning, I remember Project Life being difficult to transition to, for me at least. I own a wide variety of page protectors. Switching to taking the landscape photos suddenly made it so much easier. I think that's one reason I haven't done my daughter's baby album yet. I'm going to do it PL style, but I'm kinda dreading going through the thousands of photos on my hard drive and all the various orientations I know I'll come across.

I am SO GLAD to know I'm not the only one whose kid doesn't have a baby book finished!! My DD is 5--I bought the PL girl core kit two years ago. I ought to get started.
Anyway, I am doing a PL yearly album. I don't stress about weekly/monthly, I just put in the photos I have that work. I decided to only use one kind of format--the two horizontal 4x6 at the top and bottom with the 4 3x4 vertical in the middle. I try really really hard to take photos on the horizontal. That said, I do use my selphy to print my photos and the 3x4 photos, too.
The most time consuming for me is printing my photos and then getting them into the pockets. once that is done, I choose my filler or journal cards. I do sort of embellish the filler cards, but I don't go "all out", only washi or a stamp, sticker, something like that. I don't have time to make gorgeous embellished cards, it's more important *to me* that I spend my time filling out the journaling and getting photos printed, etc.
It is a little harder than they market it, but so far, this style of scrapping (pocket pages) has re-energized my scrapping.
Good luck!

PL (or P365 then) didn't work for me either. I just couldn't be constrained to those rectangles. LOL! And I'm an everything must line up and be straight girl. I even tried digital PL.
Regarding the two sides, I've read where people glue or use some sort of major stick'em to "tape" the backsides of two different styles together, so you could do two different layouts back to back. I'm not sure how that would look in real life though. . . .

I am kind of sort of doing some paper scrapping this summer (after a six-year break) and bought some PL-style pocket pages and a few different kinds of cards and embellishments. I also cut down some paper from my old stash into 4x6 and 3x2 cards I don't know; I'm kind of liking the puzzle of making my photos work in the page layouts instead of printing with a plan in mind. Sometimes it forces me to group my photos more creatively - instead of strictly chronological or event-based, I've got some pages where the photos are related only by the people in them or a theme like "LOL Moments." It's fun and easy because no extensive pre-planning involved. But you do have to give up some of the idea of perfectly executed pages and just let it sort of happen.

Using the various divided page protector styles as templates/sketches, you can create the same block/grid look with cardstock/patterned paper backgrounds. Since the format on one side does not dictate the reverse, you can create a layout that best fits the size & orientation of your photos - all while using your stash!

I only use PL for doing trips and other big occasions like my DDs' HS graduations and parties(500 photos of each with lots of family & friends I want to include). My biggest issue is having vertical and horizontal photos I want together and the dreaded back side not matching.
A couple solutions I have used in the past:
1. Use page protectors with both horizontal and verticalSimple Stories have some - Design 4 & 8.
2. Use the mostly horizontal page protectors and either print all the vertical photos at 3x4 (when using BH design A) or crop them into 4x4 and put them into one of the horizontal slots. My fave are the 6 horizontal slots. I can cut a a vertical photo in half and stack in 2 pockets. Plus I find I use more of my stash paper when using the 6 horizontal configuration.
3. That pesky back side not working. I got this idea from something a pea posted awhile back. Use a piece of white or craft cs and a regular 12x12 sheet protector. Just arrange the photos & cards on the cs. Use another sheet of cs for the back and arrange. Slip them in the regular page protector. Also works great where you you want to include a 12x12 LO on the back of a divided page protector.

YES!!!! PL pages take me just as long as regular pages. I like to embellish them, use pieces of PP from my stash in addition to the PL cards to fill in pockets, etc. So it isn't really going any faster for me. My friend here that also does PL agrees with me. I confessed to her that I'm just as slow at PL as I am at regular pages and she confessed the same thing back. Ha. One thing that has been helping me though is to scrap a regular page on one side and use the pockets on the other side and just fill those with photos. Or with photos and cards using the pocket cards cut from the same paper line I used on the regular page. Like Simple Stories. It is faster for me to do it that way than to scrap a regular two page layout. So I guess that's a bonus if I have a lot of pictures I want to use. The problem then for me is making sure I immediately do the other side of the PL pocket page so that when I put my pages in my album, that side isn't blank or otherwise weird. So that has then added the extra work of immediately doing another page (edited to clarify that I am using both pocket pages and regular pages in my son's album, so that's why I have to do this)

Yes, it absolutely can be time consuming! I am in my 6th year of project life. I have gone through phases...simplifying, embellishing, overthinking, getting behind, staying caught up. I think it depends on your style. PL has the potential to be incredibly quick and easy. Just print pics, don't over plan and edit, and get them in. However, if you want to get creative and plan it all out, it can be time consuming. However, I am a slow scrapper. So, even on my most time consuming PL layouts, I am still getting it done more quickly than traditional scrapping. I have found that I have had to adapt my style to my season in life. When I have more time, I have fun with it; when time is limited, I simplify and don't let myself over complicate the process.

Having a huge stack of photos to go through and print all at once can be overwhelming in itself. I think if you want to simplify the process a little, try just one design or maybe 2 (one of each portrait and landscape) and just make it work.
When I first started PL style scrapping, I worried too much about everything being perfect and fitting exactly right, and I got very frustrated with it. Someone told me to try and not think to much about it and that helped me.
I still do find times that I struggle a little, but once I get in the groove I seem to be ok. Good luck!
