I work for a company that is building a retirement community. We will have over 20,000 sq feet of amenity space and one off the awesome amenities will will be a man cave. The only issue is that our to Fair Housing laws we cannot call it a man cave.
So I am calling upon the peas to think of other names that we can use. "Sports cave" is one that we have thrown around.
Go!

What features will the "not a man cave" have?

Man Cave is kind of a broad name. What will the space be used for? What type of activities will be hosted there?

Time Out The Zone Penalty Box
Is this what you are talking about?

I'd go with something broader, like entertainment area or something similar.

It will be the space for the men to gather...sports memorabilia, tv's with the sports channel on it, masculine magazines, etc. We just can't use the word Man because it violates the gender portion of the federal Fair Housing laws. Gender is a protected class and if we use the word man, someone will get offended by it. The men in retirement communities are often forgotten about out. We have so many amenities geared towards women and the men get left out.

I like the suggestion above of The Zone. It is sports themed without overdoing it. It sounds like this is very sports themed room. Of course you might get women there as well. Sports would completely leave out someone like my husband unless they are going to talk about fishing.

there are some good ones here- you could combine a couple and it could be The Overtime Lounge. I also like The Locker Room. I do like Sidelines, but by itself it sounds like it's missing a second word-- "hey, Marge, I'm going down to Sidelines" sounds kind of awkward. Is it The Sidelines? Is it Sidelines Lounge? eta: lisae has a good point about making it general enough that it would include other types of sports / activities, not just games played on a field. hmmm... The Relaxation Zone?

I guess I don't get why amenities need to be gendered. Is there a place for women to gather with "women's tv"? What amenities are geared toward women exclusively? I never noticed that when my grandparents were in retirement communities. Things were generally gender-neutral.

Is there a place for women to gather with "women's tv"? it doesn't have to be gendered- that's why she's trying to come up with a different name for it. When people say 'man cave' they're typically talking about the space with the big-screen tv, sports memorabilia, etc. but it's obviously NOT just for men. eta: and I'm guessing there are plenty of entertainment / relaxation spaces in most retirement communities that are geared (although unconsciously) more towards women's types of activities.

It's actually a really tough question when you think about it (especially in a business sense). Unless the vast majority of the men who would gather there are sports fans, you would exclude a percentage of those living there by default. Is this area just about sports? Or more of an area in which men can gather which has access to sports? there is a difference, in perception if nothing else! It's a little sexist to assume that a 'male only area' HAS to be all about the sports!!! Unless you have asked the retirees what they would like to see in a communal area geared towards the males living there, you might make a mistake big enough to be a failure. What about the men who would love an area to gather and discuss anything other than sport? If you use words like 'the Sanctuary' you are tapping into language often seen in beauty salons and which might, therefore, be misconstrued. I'd keep it neutral enough that residents can easily learn what it 'means' and fluid enough that it doesn't need to be specific to be activity even though it might focus on that (in this case the bias toward sport) - maybe something like 'The Blue Room' - as in the average retiree these days is probably still of a generation where blue was for boys and pink was for girls so it would be easy (not that I am suggesting you call it that).

If it's sports-themed but needs to be gender neutral, I'd call it the Sports Zone. The Zone or the Lounge don't really identify that. Probably every man in there that had a man cave called it "The Den" back in his day, so that would work too.
If you really want to keep women out without saying so, call it The Locker Room, lol.

The Hangout. ??
The Den sounds to me more like a library with tables, books, etc. and a little more formal. If your facility isn't going to have one of those, then I like The Den for this space.

I like The Zone. It's sports-sounding so it gives a hint about the theme, but it doesn't sound unwelcoming to women who may stick their heads in.

Just a quick question on the back of this - is it intended to be mainly men or exclusively men? I ask not because I have deep rooted issues over this, but am wondering whether the facility intends to 'keep women out', just make it uncomfortable enough for them not to want to bother going in, assume that women don't like sports or just feel that there is too much general talk about knitting and baking in other areas for the poor guys to tolerate??!! What if some militant group of women decide they should be allowed to go and watch sports in the cave? I hear the older generation can get a bit feisty!

When my FIL was in a different assisted living home, the Men's area was called "The Lodge." The activities coordinator said it reminded a lot of the gentleman of the different places they used to go like The Moose Lodge, The VFW Lodge, Elks Lodge etc... It had the same vibe you speak of, big screen T.V., sports memorabilia, a large popcorn maker, a bar that had sodas, coffee, water. Peanuts in bowls, a pool table, a fireplace etc... It was pretty cool. I wish my FIL had taken advantage of it, but he was a loner and stayed in his room most of the time.
