By default, I'm a better cook. Because she doesn't really cook. We always joke about how my mil does catering by Costco. if she's a bad cook, then I'm glad because Costco makes some tasty food She does bake some really tasty cookies though.

My husband says I am a better cook than his mom. He said she used cheap meat, old food, and the same menu each week. I guess I really didn't have much competition.

My dad used to say this about his grandmothers chicken and rice dish. Everytime my mom made it, using his grandmothers recipe, he would tell her it wasn't as good as his grandmothers. So one day she went to his grandmothers house and had HER make it and she came home and served it, he STILL said it wasn't as good as hers. When she told him her scheme, he was speechless. Lol. He stopped saying things like that after that episode. Go my momma!!

His mom is a bad cook so it's no competition. I defiantly cook better!

I am not married any longer, but my ex was very clear that he liked my cooking. He was rarely negative about his mother, but he wasn't a fan of her cooking.

I don't know. I've eaten so little of her food I can't really compare. And DH knows better than to say she is a better cook than me even if it was true. I can follow a recipe pretty well, so I generally turn out tasty food. And I'm an excellent baker. The only thing I don't make that he absolutely loved of his mothers are biscuits. And he will make those. I don't really care for biscuits.
What she does have that I don't is a green thumb. She and FIL grow a magnificent garden every year and they always have lots and lots of their own bottled produce. I can't keep a silk plant looking fresh.

Nope. My sweet MIL could go to any fancy restaurant, taste a dish, and then go home and duplicate it, right down to the last spice. Her parents were wealthy and had the best cooks and chefs. She liked to help in the kitchen, and they taught her what they knew.
I'm a decent cook, but I am nowhere near as good as she was! However, DH never criticizes my cooking and frequently expresses both appreciation and compliments it.

I don't know, I never cook. It appears she made some pretty funky food though, like pasta mixed with clams, bacon and cream of mushroom soup.

Yes, I am a better cook. Dh has a dislike of casseroles. His mom would take 2-3 leftover meats, veggies, and potatoes, dump them in a dish and pour tomato soup over it and bake it. Thank goodness for microwaves so we can eat leftovers not like this!
My Dh raves about his mom's pickles, served at the table in the green Tupperware container. Every year I would ask if I could make pickles with her to learn her way, but was never invited. After 20+ years, one of the sisters finally shared the secret: his mom never made pickles! She bought Old Milwaukee brand and dumped them in the container. DH never knew!

My MIL is the best cook I know, so no. I can cook quite well, following a recipe. My MIL has the wonderful talent of being able to conjure up the most amazing dishes with whatever is in the fridge and pantry. She rarely uses a recipe. We go there every Monday night for dinner. As an example, last week she made Indian. Not just one dish plus rice, oh no. She did a lamb rogan josh, beef madras, butter chicken, pad thai (ok that's not Indian but anyway!), and saffron rice.
However, DSO prefers my tuna mornay and his own spag bol to his mother's.

Much better than his mom, and he would be the first to tell you that. Heck, his mom even says it and asks me for advice on cooking.

When we first got married I would say that his mom cooked way better than me. But over the years I have learned a lot and tried a lot of new things. I would say that I am a better cook now. Besides she doesn't cook that much anymore and everything she cooks is usually fried and not very healthy.

My MIL was a good cook. I'm a good cook. IOW, neither one of us could be called 'great' cooks. There are some things she made that I could never duplicate, and things I made that she couldn't duplicate. I did surpass her breaded chicken, though. When DH and I first met, he raved and raved about her chicken. I finally had it (we lived in different states) and it WAS good. Melt in your mouth tender, but not much flavor. After, I set about coming up with a recipe that was just as tender, but had more flavor. I succeeded, and DH once told me he never thought he'd find chicken better than his mom's until he had mine. She, however, never really liked my chicken. I think it hurt her feelings that I didn't make chicken her way. And she never did make her chicken for us again for the 18 years I knew her before she passed. L

Not even close. DH's mom is a true Southern cook...she's put Paula Deen to shame. DH would never tell me his mom's cooking is better than mine though. He's not stupid.

I can't really remember eating anything DH's mom cooked. We didn't see each other often and when we did it wasn't usually at her house so she wasn't cooking. DH doesn't request anything from his childhood that she used to make in particular. Funny story. My BIL was getting married (DH brother) and we were in town for wedding. He told his mom the only thing he wanted from her was "her spaghetti" for the rehearsal dinner. So MIL and I and the kids went grocery shopping. I was a little excited to find out about this spaghetti recipe. You know, thought I could use a tasty, homemade recipe. Well, we get to the store and she starts loading up the Prego jarred sauce! ? That was her special sauce. I think she added sausage along with ground beef but didn't that's it. It makes me laugh to this day. God rest her soul.

MIL only had 3 or 4 recipes in her repertoire, and she did them all badly. Meat burnt black, veg boiled to a mush, gravy that would bend a spoon and cake as dry as chipboard.

So much better. And I'm not being boastful.
Making spaghetti? Cook the noodles...ALL DAY...in the crock pot. And if you happen to be out of ragu, that family sized can of Campbell's tomato soup will do!
And nothing says mom loves you like sitting down to enjoy a peach pie that she has made, only to watch your sister-in-law pull a FREAKING BANDAID out of her MOUTH! Not kidding. Good ol' MIL lost her bandaid in the pie. She looks at SIL and says "oh. I wondered where that went."
We no longer allow her to cook when we have family dinners. We tell her it's because we want to do something nice for her, but that is a total lie. We are merely trying to avoid food borne illnesses.

I'm a much better cook. The only thing DH ever recalls fondly is baked macaroni and cheese with toast crumbs on top. I grew up eating pasta and cheese sauce made on the stovetop, so that's what I make. I should make the baked version for him sometime, I honestly never even think of it. ETA: I've thought about it, and I take it back... I'm not a much better cook. I think I just season food better than she does. She is a good cook, very traditional in a lot of ways. Ashley, I have an AWESOME baked mac & cheese recipe if you want it. It has white cheddar, and instead of bread or cracker crumbs, it has sauteed bacon and onions. Before we found this recipe, I would only eat Kraft, 3 cheese shells. I didn't like "homemade". I could eat this stuff every.single.day!

I tried the Pioneer Woman's mac cheese but didn't love it, and it cost me a fortune to buy the ingredients. After that I went back to the good old Kraft blue box, but would love to try something else.

My former MIL is an excellent cook. She does deep fry and uses way too much MSG in her food but she makes really delicious dishes. She does nothing but grocery shop and cook for FIL and BIL.
I still see them as my ILs even though we have been divorced for about 16 years.

Dh's mom rarely cooked ,but when she did it was Lipton onion so IN EVERYTHING! So when we first got married if I wanted out (of the marriage) all I had to do was being home a box of Lipton onion soup! LOL!

I'm a far better cook. His Mum has always tried to make the biggest pot of food from the least amount of ingredients, and throws zucchini in everything. And her food always floats in a lake of sauce or gravy. She tries to make her food "healthy" but it always comes out tasteless. DH has never asked me to make anything, in fact he encourages me not to make food like her

I cook much better and he tells me so all the time. His mom rarely will use a sprinkle of salt and never, ever, ever uses black pepper or any other spice for seasoning. Super sweet lady and overall, her food is properly prepared, it's just bland.

My poor MIL was a terrible cook. The first time I was there for Thanksgiving dinner I started to put some of her gravy on my plate, and my husband started grunting and elbowing me. I took it anyway because it looked delicious. Oh my, it was so bad it's hard to describe. The color must have come from being burned, and there was no flavor. My turkey (take-out from a cafeteria) was ruined. When she cooked she only turned the burners on High or Off. Everything usually got burned.

Only family recipes and I know I don't make them as well, but I am getting better. My tortellini often look like a vagina, but they taste the same once cooked.DH's mom worked 3 days a week, 12 hour shifts before she retired, but she was still very much the traditional wife with her cooking. She makes fantastic meals for FIL for his lunch or when he is off. Me? I make tacos and spaghetti and other easy, fast food as I work days and DH works nights. Ha! I read that as your tortellini taste the same as vagina. Kind of made me laugh! You aren't the only one that read it like that lol.

My MIL was an ok cook but she fried just about everything and didn't have very much variety. DH likes my cooking better because I don't over cook everything and season it. He also likes the wide variety of dishes that I fix. On the other hand, I can't duplicate her pound cake to save my life. It was perfect.
