I wanted to give an update - I SURVIVED!! Ha ha, just kidding. Kind of.
I wrote the original post from Logan airport. Specifically, the Boston Beer Works bar in Logan airport We were about to fly home and I was really struggling. On the way from CA to Mass. a week earlier, we hit a lot of turbulence, there were rainstorms (would we skid out on the runway when we landed!??!), etc. I was a hot mess and dreaded flying again the entire week we were Back East. I had tried some drinks before we left California (champagne and a vodka foofy thing) and they didn't help. It was a red eye; I was so nervous and it was so bumpy, I didn't sleep a wink and arrived in Boston exhausted.
Before flying home from Logan, this time I tried some red wine (based on your suggestions) and it was a little better, felt more relaxed. The weather wasn't as bad but there was turbulence. I read through this thread several times while we flew and tried many of your suggestions, which were so helpful and I wanted to THANK YOU.
I've always been one of those who say NEVER to any drugs that affect my brain chemistry but, after the extreme fear I experienced with flying this time, I think I will look into getting some low-dose Xanax for next time. I love to travel and I hate that this affects me so badly
And, yes, I have BECOME afraid of flying. Used to fly on business a lot when I was younger/before kids and had zero problem with it. I, too, think it's since becoming a parent that I've freaked out. And I felt horribly that I couldn't even act okay in front of my kids - who were totally fine with flying and comforted ME through the whole thing. I'm supposed to be the brave one
Ironically, I feel totally fine flying in small planes and "puddle jumpers" - it's just the long flights and/or jets that freak me out. Anyone else this way?
