She's ten and a half yrs old. About a month ago she had trouble lifting her head when on her left side. She whimpered or even cried. We took her to the vet. X-rays and blood work showed nothing so they gave her anti inflammatory and pain meds. It seemed to clear up then it happened again. This time she had trouble putting pressure on her front left leg. the vet suggested she was doing something to reinjure herself. We are not sure what she could be doing bc she had become far less active then she was even two months ago. Now yesterday, she didn't look right. She didn't eat dinner. She threw up a little in her sleep last night. And today.ughh today has been terrible. We made her ground beef and rice for breakfast. She ate some. She is drinking. Her breathing seems labored and she has slept all day. When she stands she's is unsteady.
We know the end seems imminent although we don't want to accept it. But we will get her help if we knew what was wrong with her.
Update: we waited as long as we could. I was actually hoping she would pass in her sleep but she wasn't really sleeping from the discomfort and panting. We took her back to the emergency er. Same story...could be this could be that. Probably a disc in her vertebrae etc. 2-3k for an MRI with no guarantee of a dx although surgery would probably follow so tack on several more thousand dollars. (All of which I would have paid if we could get HER back) We had already decided no surgery. We wanted quality of life for her and she was already not doing many of the things she loved to do. It's 730am. We were at the vet from 330-630am. Just holding her both before and after. It sucks. Everything sucks. I'm truly just numb. I know we need time. My poor baby has to get through this agony during exams. God bless her. That dog followed my dh everywhere. I just can't...

No idea but I'd take her back to the vet ASAP for some more tests.

Time to take her to a second vet for a different opinion.

mom , the first vet was the er vet. When it happened again, we took her to our regular vet. Neither one could give us a diagnosis. If we go to another, it will be the third vet. We would take her to ten vets if we have to but it's just weird that they don't know what's wrong with her.

I just looked for food/iams, treats, and frontline recalls. There are no recalls on her usuals.

There may not have been enough information showing up to have made the diagnosis initially.

My dog did some of those things and the vet thought it was addisons disease. However the tests came back negative.
She treated him with IV fluids because he was dehydrated and he had some pills prescribed before she knew the test results. In the end she just figured it was a random dog virus. After the fact my neighbors with the loose/unleashed dogs said their dogs had been sick the week before. Gee great thanks maybe you should have kept them off my lawn then.
He did get better but he was very bad for about a week. I had to force water in him with a squirting sports water bottle every hour for 2 days. My dog was 4 at the time, If my dog had been older ( and I had not been so stubborn ) the vet was not sure he would have made it.
I would bring your dog back to the vet since it's getting worse and maybe they can get results on some tests.

Not many people jpg to pay for an MRI to visualize soft tissue, for instance .. So a vet often treats the symptoms ... My vet always offers me options, but is very practical about what could be done. Since animals are unable to tell us just where and how it hurts, a full diagnosis can be a very expensive process and there may be no answers. often, even after an animal has recovered, they don't always know what was wrong.

I was thinking MRI looking for soft tissue issues, too. If you want to find answers, I think you need a specialist. I don't think I'd wait for Tuesday. I'm so sorry you and your pup are going through this. Dogs have an an amazing capacity to handle pain. I'm sad to say that it sounds like your dog is in a lot of distress. I hope you can find some answers to help.

It could be something neurological. Since she isn't better and has more symptoms she should be seen by a vet as soon as possible. I hope you get a diagnosis soon and she gets better.

I was wondering if it could be a stroke, because our first pup had some of the same symptoms. I would definitely try the vet, again.
I hope she gets better, soon!

My pups always seem to get sick on the weekends or holidays.

it could be some neurological? Was she tested for Lyme disease or Valley Fever? Is she unsteady on all four legs or just the front legs? I would definately take them back in especially if the symptoms continue or grow worse.. I hope she's okay!

My Abbey dog hurt herself running and within 10 days even on meds, she got worse. She moped around, lots of panting etc. Hardest thing I have done. I miss her so very very much. At times my grief just overwhelms me. She was 13. Hugs to you and your family. Abbey passed a month ago and I still cry daily.

Having just been through this, I know how you are feeling. Hugs.
Someone sent me this poem and it still gives me comfort
Rainbow bridge
There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of all its beautiful colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass. When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who were sick, hurt or in pain are made whole again. There is only one thing missing, they are not with their special person who loved them so much on earth. So each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring and this one runs from the group! You have been seen and when you and your special friend meet, you take him in your arms and hug him. He licks and kisses your face again and again - and you look once more into the eyes of your best friend and trusting pet. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together never again to be apart.

Ahhh geez. So sorry . I wish the outcome wasn't what it was and the only good thing to say is that your girl is no longer in pain. I am sending you a huge cyber hug on a day that will be so sad and long for you. I hope as the pain passes you will be able to smile at all the happy memories from the past 10 1/2 years.
