I fail to understand how you can be resentful of a donation challenge that has no effect on your daily life other than stopping up your fb feed. You have a loved one who passed away and I would think you would be happy that money is being raised to try and find a cure.
And I'm sure not everyone donates - as you can read on this thread, not everyone can afford to donate, but millions have been raised. Well worth "the thing to do". I'm resentful because it's become more of a fad than a fundraiser. I am willing to bet that a large majority haven't donated a dime or educated themselves about the disease. They've just made a video and posted it on FB. I've seen so many of my kids' friends do the challenge and I doubt they are sending in any money. The fact that I have heard more than one person refer to it as ASL in their video, tells me you might be right.

And I'm thinking that, since the ice bucket challenge has already raised upwards of $80 million for ALS, the charities will support this 'fad' for as long as people are willing to do it.
Personally, I donated before I could be challenged.

I simply do not understand fundraising by blackmail. I do not get it. I volunteer at the public radio station during fund drives in the fall and spring, and I volunteer for a couple of local theatre groups, and I give money to all of those entities when I have the funds. I drop money in those happy red buckets at Christmas. I donate canned goods to the local food bank. But the charities who throw their friends in jail? No. No, those charities do not get my money. Flock of plastic flamingos in my yard? No, no, thank you. Lovely flock. I'll happily let it roost forever before that charity gets my money. I'm happy to help a friend in need. But I do not understand fundraising by blackmail.
So no, if anyone blackmailed me for ALS fundraising, I would politely ignore the "challenge."

My daughter thought this was the best thing, ever. She did it twice. She mentioned ALS in her videos and is donating the $10.
I haven't been nominated. I don't want to be nominated. If I am, I will just ignore it. No way am I consenting to be videotaped while getting ice water dumped on my head. Also- like Pennyring, I'm not a joiner.
However - I have watched a few of the videos posted on my feed and it was fun seeing them. I haven't noticed any fights about it, or people getting mad about being ignored, etc. One family member posted a hand slappy note about how crappy you were if you had reservations or objections. Interestingly enough- she's the most likely person on my friends list to have done the challenge without donating.
The sheer quantity of ice bucket challenge stuff on my feed everyday is getting tedious though. That's not a criticism of any friend who posted a video though. It's just a comment re: overload.

Social media timeout for several of you. Pronto! It's for your own good. This is is going to phase out. I promise.

Well if you saw the huge blow ups I have seen over those of us choosing not to do it you would think blackmail too. Calling someone out to give money publicly is never okay. And as for your other comment about the animal thread here. I find that annoying too. But I'm not called out personally in it so I just ignore it.

If people aren't playing nice, don't play. Delete them. Ignore them. Stay away until it dies down.

I did unfriend them but I am not going to get off of Facebook that I use to keep in touch with my family because others don't know what they are doing is beyond rude.

I kinda agree with chirpingcricket, I just don't get the guilt to donate. Not saying ALS isn't a worthy issue to donate, but many people have their own health issues that run in their families that they probably donate to, like breast cancer. So I don't think any less of those that choose to opt out. No one knows your pocket book better than you. Also, no one knows if those buckets are really filled with ice cold water, could be room temp and they are great actors.
