Just curious? My dog usually has a dog door during the day because he stays at my parent's house when I go to work. But at my house, he has to be taken for a walk. Just curious how often I should take him outside for walks to relieve himself? He doesn't really ever bark or anything when he wants to go, so I just take him out every couple hours. Thanks!

My dog goes out at about 7:30 in the morning and then waits until my kids get home at 3:00 to go out again. When the weather is nice she will go outside with me when I smoke. So she goes out frequently. When it's cold outside I've noticed she wants to go out about every three hours.

According to my sister's vet, dogs that have to be walked need to be taken out 4 times a day. Morning when first awakening, and right before bed. Then two other times that work for your schedule (like a second morning walk before you leave for work and right when you get home)

I have a rescue dog who is 5, and she doesn't tell us when she needs to go out. An adult dog in theory should be able to hold it for 8 hours. However, I like to get my dog out every 4-5 hours, so we go 4 times per day.

My dogs go out about 6-7x per day. They like to go out everytime they hear or see something so quite a bit. Not always going to pee though. My oldest dog hates the outside and only goes if she must lol.

My dog uses a potty pad on my shower floor during the times we are inside and upstairs. Downstairs, he will sometimes use the downstairs potty pad and sometimes he will ask to go outside. I would guesstimate he pees about 5 or 6 times a day. Unless we go somewhere, then he has to pee at least two drops on every bush and tree along our path, making it one big long pee session.
He's funny about his pee habits. When he's at home, he squats to pee and always has. When we are in public, he lifts his leg. It cracks me up. He will even squat in my backyard, so it isn't just that there is nothing to pee on inside the house. It is really comical when he lifts one leg and then squats like he can't make up his mind.

According to my dog?
Every 4.5 secs.
And as soon as a huomon gets comfortable in a spot farthest from whatever door dog wants out of.

Ours goes out 4 times a day (morning, noon, dinner, before bed). He never a tells us when he needs to go so there are still some accidents. But he at least uses a doggy pad.

How often does an average healthy dog need to go outside?
Define "need" -would be my answer. Furry friend here feels he needs to go out enough times a day that a revolving door sounds like a good idea. But most of his "needs" center around squirrels, balls, birds, frisbees, chipmunks, bunnies and the need to herd and chase.
That being said when he is left for long periods of time (very infrequent) he has never had an accident in the house so that need and the previously mentioned are on opposite ends of the spectrum. (Like the above mentioned 2.5 seconds vs 8+ hours)

Lucy has an iron bladder so can go for 12 hours at a stretch ... She goes out at night (10pm) and morning (5am) an a number of times during the day to simply sun herself on the deck

So I'm just trying to see what the average really is. Thanks for the responses, I think I'm getting suckered into a few more walks than actually needed, but I suppose there are worse habits than too many walks

Depends on if the door is open or not. We have a doggie door in the storm door and typically we leave the door open through out the day. If the door is open he might go out in the morning, once in the after noon and then again at night. When the weather gets severe we shut the door and then his needs become every 10 minutes. I kid you not. He will stand at the back door and wait for us to open the door. Or he will pace around us till we let him out. But if the door is open for him to come and go as he pleases, he sleeps on the couch. Drives me batty.

Mine does it all the time. He will go on 3 walks and NOT pee because he's waiting for a specific person to walk him.

We have a doggie door so I really don't pay attention.
Sometimes they go outside just to lay in the sun.
They also get a mile walk in the morning and at least a mile in the evening.

My daughter has a dog and lives in a high rise apartment. She trained her dog to ring a bell when he needs to go out. He uses it a couple times a day, I believe.

I have a doggy door and I'm home all day. My 2 shih tzus are in and out constantly in nice weather. How many times to actually pee or poo is unknown, I'm sure most of the time they're out there is just to run around and play.

We have a screen on our slider that the dog can come in and as she wants. Her water is outside also. I would have to guess the number of times she needs to go out is about 3,025 times a day. LOL I do know she can go several hours if she is in her kennel.

I have a small chihuahua who loves to drink lots of water. This isn't bad, is it? But this means she needs to go out at least every 3 hours, minimum.

Our Bella was trained to go 12-14 hours without going outside. The normal routine is to take her out for a short walk at 7am and a longer walk around 7pm. On rainy days we can get away with this as she will go to the front door if she needs to be taken out again.
If she just wants to go outside, she whacks a paw on the slider until someone opens it and then does the same when she wants back in. There are too many snakes around here for me to ever consider putting in a doggie door. A typical day has her outside for several hours in the yard and going for a longer walk midmorning (more for exercise than to take care of bathroom needs). I'm sure she pees in the yard, but we rarely find any poop. If no one will be home for her evening walk, she gets taken out earlier and then again when we come home (unless she lets us know she isn't interested).

mine usually goes twice. Once before Dh goes to bed between 9:30-10:00, I'm usually up late so she'll come stand in the hallway to bark at me around 1am to see if I'm there. It's kinda funny. if not then she nudges Dh about 3am. Shes a big dog and we don't have a doggie door. We have two doors, the main door and the mud room door so it's kinda hard to figure out where and if we're gonna put a doggie door in.
ETA:I should add a few times during the day too.. I was thinking you were asking about just night time!

At our old house we had a dog door to the screened porch in back that lead out to our fenced yard. When the weather was nice we'd just leave the door to the house open, lock the screen door and they could come and go as they pleased which was about every half hour, LOL. Once we moved to our current house that was no longer an easy option, plus my allergies got worse living out where there are more trees and ragweed so we have the doors and windows closed up more in the summertime. Our old dogs would go outside more often than most because they were conditioned to a lifetime of being able to go out at will. I'd say probably at least 8-10 times a day, but usually just to scope out what was going on outside and not necessarily to pee.
Now we have one old dog left and he's our 'bark at everything that moves' guy. I don't always let him out now if I'm fairly certain he doesn't need to be out, because he barks at everything and drives me nuts. Even so, he probably still goes out at least 6-7 times a day. He doesn't get walked on a leash because he pulls his head out and doesn't behave, but he does have the run of an almost two acre yard surrounded by Invisible Fence.
Our newest dog is almost two but she is a rescue and wasn't house trained properly by her original owner. I've had her for a little over five months. I take her out to go potty probably 4-6 times a day depending on how much I'm home to give her as many opportunities to go out as I can to increase her chances of successful days. Since I'm the one primarily watching her and paying attention, she probably actually pees about four times a day and poops twice most days.

This is our first time owning a dog, and she is only 2 years old. We take her for regular checkups and shots, but I don't believe they have ever checked for anything other than usual dog stuff. Thanks you.

My dog needs to go out 2x day. She wants to go out several more times a day just for fun, so it depends on our schedule that day.

Our old man would get a long walk in the morning and pee himself out for the rest of the morning, afternoon, after he ate dinner, walk at night and peed a few more times, and then before bed. He never (ever) let us know he wanted to go out. We just had to guess when we thought he would want to go. He got walked early in the morning so he was good after waiting all night.

4 times a day. During the school year, I take him out first thing, then right before I leave for work. We take a walk when I get home, and he goes out at night. Outings are looser during the summer, but it's always 4 times. He knows when it's time to go, too!
