The gen rd English teachers are going to teach Bronte's Wuthering Heights this year. Since I often need to help my students with their assignments, I was going to read it over the summer.
I can't get past 10 pages before I want to pretend I don't know how to read.
It is boring and painful. Any advice?

I felt that way when I tried to read it in High School. I've been thinking lately that I should try again now that I've had 30 more years to mature as a reader. Apparently not. I got through class with Cliff Notes. Is that still a thing? Or maybe you can watch several movie versions and see where they overlap.
Sorry, I'm no help at all.

You've got to get past that first chapter. It is one of my favourite books, but you have to get past the first part and stick with it until the story really begins to unfold and then you'll be hooked.

I've never been able to finish it. I've seen a couple of the movie versions, but it's not a favorite classic story for me.
Jane Eyre, on the other hand, is my favorite book. Different sisters, different styles.

I got nothing. I was supposed to read it in high school and I just. Could. Not. I had to fake it the best I could and I was a great student. That book just killed me.

It does get better after the first couple of chapters, it's one of my favourite books but if you can't get into it I wouldn't force it.

My 8th grader is reading it.. she said it took her 60 pages to get into it. Her teacher gave her a bookmark with definitions on it to help her... maybe that will help you?

I gets better as you read it but I do agree, it is kind of a boring book. However the last bit is what makes all the drudgery before it worth it! Once I got through it the first time and knew what the payout would be, it made the subsequent readings that much more tolerable and enjoyable.

Try an audiobook. I majored in English Literature, but I often find it much more enjoyable to listen to rather than read the classics. It makes sense because most books from that era were read aloud to an audience.
That said, I have read Wuthering Heights twice in print, never audio. I always found it a compelling read, but not in the least romantic. There isn't a single relationship in that book that isn't effed up.
Don't get me started on how effed up Jane Eyre is too.

Honestly those books are really more appealing to 16-20 year old really really sheltered girls. Or gentlewomen.
I would suggest that you put on something flouncy and hide in an attic or in a overgrown patch of garden to read.

It is boring and painful. Any advice? I started as well and didn't get far. I also couldn't get finish Pride and Prejudice and Emma, yet I can handle Dickens which is frequently described as boring and painful.

I finally got the audiobook and loved it. If you go to Amazon, check the Whispersync page of 99 cent classics. You buy the Kindle edition for free and can add the Audible audiobook for 99 cents. It's a great deal.

I read it in Year 11 English Literature and quite enjoyed the story, but yes it did take a while to get into it. I agree with those who mentioned getting the audio book, it might make it easier to get through.
And now I have Kate Bush in my head.....
"Heathcliff, it's me, I'm Cathy, I've come home I'm so co-o-o-old Let me in your window-ow-ow-ow"

I've started and stopped that book 3 times. I can never get passed the first 20 pages. Good luck!

There isn't a single relationship in that book that isn't effed up. Ain't that the truth! Yes, definitely read past the first 100 pages or so. You read their relationships and they are just so sad, and mean, and vengeful, and desperate and lonely. And cruel. This is not a love story, for sure. It is obsession and games.

It does get better after awhile, but not much. It really is not one of my favourite books, and certainly not one I'd read again.

I liked it better when I read it a few years ago vs my high school reading, but it will never be amazing. There's a line from near the end that stands out for me, though.

I never read it at school, but I'm slogging through it now. It's boring and I'm over half way through.

I only read it in the past few months. I'd say it definitely gets better than the first few pages...where I didn't really understand what was going on. The old guy is travelling, then he gets sicks, one of the local women starts to visit him and gradually tells him the story of Catherine and Heathcliff, then all the characters you meet in the first part of the novel slowly start to make sense.
I say finish it because it's totally different to what you think. How any Hollywood producer read this and thought "epic love story" is beyond me. Heathcliff is a psycho-stalker, rapist nutcase & Cathy is immature & cruel (I was also surprised that she's not actually in most of the book) It's worth reading if only to correct the completely misguided idea that Heathcliff is some sort of misunderstood romantic hero.
It was so different to what I was expecting, and it's really dark and Heathcliff is such a horrible character...with this book and Jane Eyre it made me wonder what sort of men the Bronte sisters knew in real life.

Can't help you. I never could get into it, either. I've read all of Austen and quite a few things other people think are dry, but Wuthering Heights eludes me.

Jane Eyre is my very favorite book so I tend to favor all the Brontes on principle of relation to Charlottr. Even with that bias, I never cared for Wuthering Heights.

You just reminded me that I have a picture of myself from high school, asleep on my bed, with "Wuthering Heights" open in front of me. Every time I tried to read it, I dozed off. My mom thought it was funny, thus the photo. I ended up switching to another book for my assignment (we had a list to choose from.)

It's the only piece of required reading that I never actually read. I scraped by with Cliff's Notes and the good nature of my then-boyfriend who not only read the book but loved it.

I am embarrassed to admit that it is one of my favourite books. As a teen studying it at school I fell under the spell of the dark bleakness. Their love story is one of broken and damaged people causing more damage in their wake. I found it haunting. If you want to watch it for cliff notes, I would watch the Tom Hardy version.
