Given the article that you posted, were you hesitant to call the police because you personally fear the police or did you hesitate calling in for fear of what may (or may not) have happened to those teenagers home invading you?

I have no doubt regarding the findings of the study. Which is incredibly depressing and wrong.
And, I would also add that one's interpersonal communication style also impacts how one is treated, regardless of race.
If the OP speaks to people IRL as she does here, I would not be surprised if she received less-than-polite responses/treatment in return.

My niece lives in an all-Black neighborhood in Chicago. She was recently robbed and the police said it wasn't even worth their time to go there. WTF? I'm sorry Olan I really do think it's dependent on where you live. I don't doubt your study, and it's clearly a problem everywhere, but I think where you live can make a big difference. I live in a neighborhood where it's roughly 60% white and 40% Black and I socialize with my neighbors a lot. We talk about this stuff all the time. There are a lot of problems Black people have in my city, but the police is not one of them.

With the limited exposure of seeing it happen (watching cop shows and the news) I sadly agree. Not all cops but the majority. I think a lot of the actions and reactions, on both sides, are due to anger and fear. And I don't see it getting any better without some sort of change. Maybe you can start some sort of grassroots campaign in your community that brings people and cops together like this: coffee with copsI don't know. I don't have an answer or the perfect solution. But I do have compassion for you. And I wish there was something that could be done.

Not all white people believe that disrespect is warranted towards black people.
And I'm very compassionate and passionate about the mistreatment of animals, HOWEVER--it is not even a comparison (like you're doing) of humans vs animals.

I do agree. I've had mixed encounters with police, some good and some really bad. It can really vary; sometimes its because of the location, time of day, number of black people around when the cops show up, the nature of the call to them, etc... I mean sometimes you really don't know what you're going to get when it comes to police interactions and honestly I tend to lean more towards the negative side because that is my experience, doesn't really matter how I act I tend to get the same treatment... And that is depressing.
Its one of those unfortunate things where its become normal and almost expected.

Yeah, I read that this morning. Definitely filed under ish black people have known forever. This is one of the reasons I have to get away from facebook sometimes, it's so overwhelming. This study wasn't even the worst I have encountered today.
Sometimes the overwhelm of pain, suffering, and indignity inflicted on people I know and love is hard to hear and deal with. At the same time, I'm glad to know I have a community that gets it. No teaching, no mind numbing race 101 bullshit. I hope you have something like that too.
