As a general rule, I don't think it's wise to advertise that you are away from home on the internet. I don't "check in" at places and have my location setting turned off on Facebook for that very reason.

The thing is, while you may have only very close friends and family that you trust on FB, you never know who has access to the computers and FB accounts of those friends and family. JMO. Personally, no, we never advertise when we're away from home. This. And, you never know who among your FB friends - or their family - might casually mention your trip to someone else, like a teenager telling a friend, and maybe that friend isn't so upright and honest.

I would never post information like that on Facebook or any social media. My DH would have a fit if he thought we did. He is very paranoid about things like that. But I will post pictures and stories once we are back home.

I am only FB friends with people I know, but just because I know who they are doesn't mean I KNOW them. I have friends I've made through activities DD is involved in that I know I wouldn't trust with that info. So if we were all to be gone, no I definitely would not post anything until we returned.
Last summer DD and I went to FL with a friend while DH stayed home. I posted photos then, but also that it was a girls' trip so it was obvious we weren't all gone.

Never. I always post photos after I am back. Sometimes, I don't mention it at all that I even went on vacation.

Not posting anything until after the fact. Same with us.

I agree with you OP. I'm amazed at how often I see people I know doing this. I don't think it hurts to be cautious. I have plans later this summer to be away but my husband will still be home and we have people coming 2x a day to take care of the horses during the weekday portion of the trip. I'm not giving any specifics though before or during on FB. I'll post after we're back home.

Never. It pays to have some things hidden from the public.

I never post vacation plans on FB or any other social media until after the trip. I also don't check in at places and I don't like when people check in and tag me as there with them. I don't want everybody to know my house is empty.
