-Making a banner and having it look even. You know, where the two sides meet at the bottom and both sides of the banner are supposed to be even in that triangle area? -Stamping an image without excess ink on one area or not enough. Rarely is it a perfect image. -Cutting paper straight, even with a paper trimmer. -Making everything symmetrical, and it's a style I love. So I purposely haphazardly place items on my page. -Doing the messy look and making it look good. It usually looks like, oh, that's unfortunate she spilled something on her page. -Adding lots of embellishments to a page and make it look cohesive. Hence, my pages are mostly paper and a few diecuts. Add yours

It's gelato's for me. I bought a boatload of them and cannot get them to look as good as Missy Whidden does on her pages. Grrr! I have not given up yet but they are collecting dust.

They develop a life of their own, and I can't stop until they take over the page. I have learned to live with not being to cut a sleight line or align things properly on a page by tearing edges and tipping some elements on purpose.

Then use your scissors and snip through the folded half going diagonally. When you unfold you will have a perfectly centered fish tail to your banner.

I just ordered it yesterday and can't wait to try it. My handmade banners look terrible!

I really avoid messy techniques because I know I will get whatever the medium is all over myself. I remember when paint splattering came into style about 15 years ago and I ended up splattering acrylic paint all over a favorite t-shirt. That was my first hint that paints and ink sprays were probably not for me. So about the most I can do is swipe distress ink on things, even though there's always a very real chance I'll drop the pad face down on my shirt.

-Cutting paper straight, even with a paper trimmer. ugh. I do a bit better with my guillotine trimmer, but I don't have room for it in this craft room. I have to use my cameo for banners. Or before the cameo, I'd just use lace or embellishments to hide the errors.

I know the "trick" for banners but I still have issues. If the paper is thick I can't get it to work without making a crease in the paper which bugs me. I am curious about the punches but at the same time I don't want to add any more punches to my collection as I have way too many including a few banner shapes.

I can't do the triangle thing with banners. Misting and splattering usually ends up a mess also.

Add yours for an even banner... lightly fold paper (end of the banner) in half but don't crease it, draw a dot about where you want to top of the "triangle" to be (somewhere along the non-folded line you just made) cut from one corner to the dot, then cut from the other corner to the dot. Remove triangle piece. Voila an even banner.

Tim Holtz techniques. They just look like crap spilled on my page/tag.
One of the reasons I don't do the artsy style.

I use a different technique to make my banners because the crease in the paper used to annoy me too. I measure the width of the piece I'm using and mark the centre on the back. I then cut in a straight line up the centre to wherever I want my banner tails to start. Then I cut from one corner to the top of the centre cut line. If I've done it properly I should have a little triangle cut out.
I then do the same thing from the other corner to the top of the centre cut line. I think I've only ever had a couple that haven't worked well using this method.

This is me also, I can just not get them to look any good, they are either streaky and patchy, the colour payoff is poor or I get what looks like clumps of crayon on the paper. I have had much, much better results using the distress ink pads and a watercolour brush.

Ummm...fussy cutting? Like at all? I see people say they love fussy cutting and I always think to myself, what a freak...
(That was completely said in jest, because I wish I loved fussy cutting! I will go to any lengths to avoid it. When I do it, it looks like a child cut ransom letters out of a magazine.)

That way, it doesn't have to be perfect. 🙂

Yea, it looks like a hot mess when I try it. ha! Every once in a while, I'll practice using random or sometimes duplicate picture. I know it's mostly trying to get comfortable doing it but I keep overthinking it.

Um...I am legitimately embarrassed to admit this, but I have no idea what dies are for. 😳 I've always assumed every die had to be used with a die cutter machine, so I just ignored them. But I'm starting to suspect that I'm missing out on something.

refugeepea DS recently completed a skills and aptitude assessment to help him prepare for career choice / college major. The counselor noted he selected asymmetrical shapes or arrangements as favorites in art, graphics and other presentations. According to their data it showed an ability to assess overall composition. There was a lot more detail, but supposedly it showed a higher level of thinking and ability in visual design sector. Whether this is true or not - Own it !!!

Tim Holtz techniques. They just look like crap spilled on my page/tag. Ya know, sometimes I think the same thing about my pages. But ya know what I think it is, to a degree? I think we just accept that others' layouts with these techniques are better because they are famous or celebrities. Um...I am legitimately embarrassed to admit this, but I have no idea what dies are for. 😳 I've always assumed every die had to be used with a die cutter machine, so I just ignored them. But I'm starting to suspect that I'm missing out on something. No need for embarrassment. Seriously, this is where we learn. Metal dies are for cutting paper in a manual die cutting machine, like a Big Shot. Die cuts are the paper pieces that have been cut by dies.

Ah, the beautiful mess Only the latter part applies to me. I love the watercolor background look but mine alaways turn out murkey and gray. I've had minor success with mist paints but it mostly looks like bad graffiti.
I haven't seen this one mentioned yet: I cannot get the hang of using an xacto craft knife. Even if I bump it up against a metal ruler I can't cut a straight line with it. And forget about cutting the middle out of a design-total hack job. I don't know if people are still using these much but I got rid of mine ages ago.

Visual triangles. Mine always look forced and unnatural. I've kind of given up on them and just add my embellishments and elements where I think they look good.
