we went looking for the breakfast sausages we bought on Saturday when I couldn't find them Sunday morning - they were still in the cooler bag that had gone back to the trunk of the car....

According to the Heinz website, ketchup is shelf stable, but after opening, the stability can be affected by storage conditions. They recommend refrigeration after opening for the best quality. I know there are people who don't refrigerate it. I'm not one of those people. And I don't like ketchup anyway! Restaurants everywhere totally ignore that advice. Save

I did the same thing with milk except I left it on my front porch.

I had some brats fall out of my grocery bags in the trunk of my car in the summer once. They got jostled around sort of wedged under the carpet layer that covers the spare tire. I forgot I'd even bought them. After a few days, I was searching for whatever had died in my car and couldn't find it. I think it was a full week before I lifted the carpet and found them. It was awful, 90+ temps and nasty, stinky brats in an enclosed space.

We are doggy sitting my in-law's dog while they are overseas for a month. Before they left my MIL gave me a month's supply of chicken drumsticks for her dog AND my dog. She had taken the skin off, wrapped each one individually and put them in bags of 2. I was supposed to put them in the freezer and take out 2 each day to defrost. I put them in the outside fridge and promptly forgot about them. A week later I remembered but by then they were off and I had to throw them all out. Another time I ordered half a lamb, cut into chops, steak, backstraps, leg roasts etc. It was delivered all the way from up in the alpine region (about 4 hours away). I put it in the fridge in the garage and was going to freeze it but forgot about it until it had all gone off. That stupid mistake cost me $140. I think I've learnt my lesson now.

At least you found it today and not three days from now! That stinks, though.

Our neighbors bought a package of expensive cheese that rolled out of the plastic grocery bag in the trunk and it slipped down into a little pocket behind the back seat. When they unloaded the groceries they were sure they bought the cheese but couldn't find it and thought it probably got left at the store. Until three weeks later. The neighborhood was getting ready for a community garage sale and the car had been parked in the driveway and it was over 80 degrees outside. Their new car REEKED.

Not a milk story but... I wouldn't say we were poor growing up but we had a strict budget and didn't have a lot of extras. We walked to elementary school and had to pass a meat market on the way. My sister who was about six or seven and the next door neighbor were walking home from school and right outside the meat market the neighbor kid found a wrapped package of meat in the gutter. Someone had dropped it getting into their car. The neighbor kid said he was going to take it home. My sister told him it was probably poisoned so he dropped it. My sister then picked it up and brought it home. Inside were three expensive steaks. The sealed package still had the butchers tape on it and was still cold. My mother cooked those steaks and we had a great meal. I always wonder what the people who dropped the steaks thought.
My sister must have had radar for food because she also found a whole watermelon in the alley one day and all of us kids ate that too.

I had my two sons bring the groceries in from my van. I didn't go out to double check that they'd brought everything into the house. About a week later I couldn't figure out what the horrid smell was in the back of my van. I found a gallon of milk that the boys had overlooked that had curdled and soured and was leaking into the carpet. Another time, right after the birth of DS #2 I went to the grocery store with my Mom and DH. I assumed that all of the groceries had been brought into the house and put away. The next day I went to prepare dinner and couldn't find the meat I'd bought . . . it was in the back of my van, spoiled, along with $40 worth of other meat.

I recently forgot a stick of butter in the trunk of my car. Needless to say it melted and the trunk of a car was one big greasy mess. Jen

Knock on wood I haven't done that but one time I bought expensive gluten free waffles for dh who was on a restricted diet and he put them in the cupboard above the fridge instead of the freezer, I discovered then the next day and he felt so bad he ate them. He also left a 3 gallon tub of ice cream sitting on the counter in the basement by the freezer and I discovered that the next day. He said it was too hard to scoop so he left it to thaw. He has a horrible memory so of course he forgot. My worst transgression has probably been forgetting leftovers on the stove but there's not normally that much so it's not a huge waste.
My parents never allowed us to pour milk and set it on the table while eating, it always went straight back to the fridge, so I have better habits than he does. To hear the stories of his childhood and his mom being so strict I'm surprised he's left so many things just sitting out.

I thought I put chicken in the freezer while putting away groceries and then found it on the counter after clearing bags away. Not a huge deal...just could have sworn I JUST PUT THEM AWAY. I thought I was losing it a bit.
Next day, went looking for my eggs to do some baking. Couldn't find them anywhere in the fridge. Oh no...please tell me husband didn't leave them in the car, I thought. Check the car. Nope. Not in the car.
Look all over...mostly concerned with smells if they weren't found. After about 20 minutes of "where could they be" brainstorming, I remembered having felt like I put chicken in the freezer twice the day before. Sure enough as soon as I open the freezer door, I find a carton of frozen, semi-exploded and completely unusable eggs right under the chicken!

Our $20 package of hamburger made it out of the car but was left sitting on the counter near our basement freezer. I found it 2 days later. Thanks husband. Mine DH has done that with ICE CREAM! I feel your pain!

I once had a pack of Rib-eye steaks slide out of a grocery bag. Stayed in my trunk all afternoon and half the next day - in Alabama - in August... Yeah, that was a pleasant smell...

We could smell something not quite right in our pantry, thought it was that weird smell potatoes sometimes get. It got worse so we threw them out- nope, smell still there. Finally found a kilo of mince left behind in one of our green bags. (re-usable bags so we keep them all together in a bunch) it was nice and green and very off!
Another time we were driving up the coast of Qld, 5 hrs from airport. As my mother in laws husband was flying interstate he had left his car at airport for us to pick up and use. We saw a stall by the side of the road selling Moreton Bay bugs (an Australian type of lobster). They packaged them nicely in bags of ice and double bagged them as we had a long way to go. When we arrived we took them inside straight away and ate them for dinner. Delicious!
Next morning, went out to the car and discovered the most horrific smell- bags had leaked seafoody water over the carpet in back seat area. We scrubbed and scrubbed, used every cleaner and disinfectant known to mankind over the next week and thought we had got rid of it. Picked him up from airport, with windows open- around 30 + degrees Celsius, got all the way home before he said "What the hell is that smell?" Thank goodness we were going home soon after.

These stories crack me up. I myself have had so many of these things happen to me it's not even funny. I've had chicken left in the car. A roll of pork sausage left in the car, an exploded can of mountain dew. I've left ice cream on top of the freezer in my basement. I do shit like this all the time.

Every year, my employer sponsors several cattle at the local 4H fairs (essentially buying the cattle). We pay to have it butchered and then every employee gets 10 lbs of freshly ground beef. One year I put the bag on the floor of my car (in the back). Forgot about it for a couple days till I noticed the smell.

My DH has done most of these to one degree or another. The odd thing is that he's the MOST FRUGAL man, so how is he so careless with food?
I've put a can of soda in the freezer to quick chill and forgotten about it. Exploded soda everywhere.

I just found a deli sub sandwich in the breadbox. I guess DH missed that it had meat in it and wasn't just a skinny loaf of bread. Fortunately it had been in there all of 5 minutes so no harm.

Trunk of car. Baileys liquor leaked from a broken bottle when we went on vacation to Keuka Lake in 2003... Smelled until the day it was totaled in 2006.

I sent hubby to sams for a few things after work on like a friday. On sat, I said, hey what did you do with that Hamburger you bought at sams? Did you forget to buy some? NOPE, it was in the backseat of his car. ugh, yuck!

I bought a Honeybaked ham for Christmas dinner at my in-laws. It was the star of the dinner. Left it in the trunk overnight. The next am we were packing the car and found the ham. Luckily, I found an open Honeybaked on the way and was able to save Christmas dinner. That was a huge and expensive mistake. Smoked ham, left overnight in the trunk of the car during winter? I totally would have served that sucker. You'd have to work a lot harder than that to make a ham go bad. And don't even get me started on a bottle of ketchup that sat out overnight. The only story I can think of at the moment is I got home from Trader Joe's one day (20 minutes away and across a $5 bridge) and couldn't find something ... then I realized I couldn't find several things. I called the store and asked if I'd left a bag there. They said, TWO bags. I left two big freakin' bags of groceries in the cart when I unloaded it. WTAF?! How do you miss two bags of groceries? Anyway, they had put them in the refrigerator for me, and instead of going back over the bridge, I made my poor brother pick them up on his way out to visit the next day. He'll pretty much do anything for anyone, and I took gross advantage of his good nature. I would never have had the nerve to ask my sister to do it.

Oh, I thought of something else. I once tossed a gallon of liquid Tide into the back row of my minivan and I guess it landed in its side. And I also guess the cap wasn't screwed on tight. I don't live far from the supermarket, but by the time I got home, half the bottle had soaked into the fabric-covered seat. The damage wasn't terrible, as the sour milk and rotten meat stories are, but that 3rd-row seat was never the same. There was so much detergent soaked into the seat that there was just no way to just rinse it all out. I probably could have sent it to the dealer to fix, but it wasn't worth the expense or trouble to me. So for the life of that car, there was a big sticky spot on that seat. I covered it with a towel, and fortunately, only kids sat back there anyway.

DS forgot about 2 bananas he had in his backpack at the end of the school year. It hung in his closet unopened until August. I have no idea how it didn't leak, and didn't stink, but they had turned into chunky, liquid, mold. Of course it was his basketball back pack and part of his uniform, so we had to wash it. I made him hose it out first.
