We just got one a couple of months ago, size large. It was on sale, so there was some savings there. Under $1000 for a package deal, I think. The lump hardwood coal lasts a long time, and there is hardly any cleanup as others have mentioned. No chemicals in the coal or starter thingies. We haven't had a grill for the past five years since we were out of the continental US, so it's a treat to cook out again. Can't wait to do the thanksgiving turkey in it; that's one thing I've missed from the old kettle cooker.
Eta: Most things don't taste very smoky unless I add apple wood chips.

MIL and I bought DH the large BGE for his 50th birthday. Best purchase ever! Food cooked on it has so much flavor. We use it all the time.

Am I the only person who isn't really into "smoked" flavor in my food? I don't mind smoked flavor once in a while, but not all the time. Is the BGE a smoker or is that just an option? SaveSaveI made double baked potatoes and chicken wing tonight, grilled steaks last night. No smoke. If you want to learn more, go to their website and check out their recipes. I tend to rely more on the forum and YouTube, though.

why do they even make the small one - XL seems the only size that works for an actual family why bother even firing up that tiny one! Some people use them for tailgating or picnics. I've noticed several who post on the Egghead Forum will have a small as well as a larger size. They will cook on both of them for parties, etc. Some of the posters on that forum border on being fanatical! BGE uses natural lump charcoal which is made from oak or hickory and has no chemicals in it. It's not the same as charcoal briquettes. In fact they recommend not using briquettes. The small Egg is great for shorter or smaller cooks like just a steak or two or even a chicken. I do spatchcock chicken that is so good! When I do these I can get two on the large or I will do one larger one to eat for that night and throw another one on for another meal later that week. The Egghead Forum is a lot of fun sometimes and @gypsy is right. Some of these people are obsessed with their Eggs. Mostly dudes but there are a few ladies on there. I've gotten some great feedback and recipes and tips here. When I first started, someone suggested a cooking journal and it was a great idea. There are a few off topic conversations but nothing too crazy and there's never any drama. Just a lot of food pics! SaveSaveSaveSave

We did a lot of research before purchasing, and ended up going with the Kamado Joe XL. It is basically the same as the BGE, but red ceramic instead of green. The reason we chose the Joe is that we got the entire set up -- ceramic cooker, stand, diffuser, racks, etc -- for the same price as just the BGE ceramic cooker. With BGE, you buy the cooker, then you have to buy or build a stand for it, and all the diffusers, racks, etc are separate purchases. Our local shop carried the BGE almost exclusively (as far as ceramic cookers) when we first bought ours, and last time we stopped in there, there was only one model in the store. The had switched over almost all the inventory to the KJ cooker. It really is a better value for the same cooker.
We use ours at least once per week and year round here in the south east. We've smoked meats --pork butts, brisket, chicken, turkey -- and just grilled steaks, chops, veggies, etc. My DH can smoke some killer babyback ribs in that thing!
