We are building a house, first time, we are getting into the nitty gritty of having to pick where we need outlets and such. Is there anywhere you wish you had outlet or switches that you wish you had and don't? Anything you wish you did or didn't do? We are putting extra outlets outside for xmas lights and on the deck and porch. We have extra hose bibs. I can't think of anything else right now. Oh, pantry will have a motion light. What else? Anything else besides lights that we should think about that you wished you did or didn't do? I am always interested in what others have. We have a fairly small kitchen island with the sink in it and I have been vacillating whether to have it one level or two levels. I am thinking one level, just to give me more counter space to work with. Anyone regret that? The kitchen/living room is a great room concept, so it's open. Also, has anyone painted with Accessible Beige colored paint? We are really leaning towards that color. It's been highly recommended to us. It's a beige with gray under tones. Our house will have a lot of gray undertones in it (with browns) and the exterior will be gray. Thanks in advance, I'll check back in a bit.

If I were to be building right now, I would include USB ports in my outlets.

You'll need at least one outlet on each wall just in case.

Have outlets at 18" from floor for ease of access. I agree with a USB outlet in most rooms.

Add outlets to places you don't think you will ever use them, it is easier to add now.
When my brother and his wife built a house, she had them put an outlet in the pantry. The electrician almost didn't listen to her. She used that outlet all the time.
Do you know where you will put your Christmas tree? make sure an outlet is there or very near.
I wish I could build, I have so many ideas.

I would have outlets near the fireplace mantel. Floor outlets for ease of designing furniture arrangements and placement of lamp cords.
Don't know if you live in a mud room area, but if you do, make it 3x the size you think you need. This is my one big regret from our remodel because it's a room that serves a lot of purposes and gets the most use.
Is it one story or two? Put the laundry on the floor where the bedrooms are so you don't have to schlep clothes and linens up and down stairs.
I think the island level thing depends on your style of cleaning up. I'm kind of compulsive about cleaning up after cooking so I don't need the ledge to hide the mess. I like clean, open counter space too.

I had at two level kitchen island that I hated. When redoing the counters, I dropped it to one height and have eating stools around it. Love it now!
I would also make my plugs USB, especially in the bedroom.

Funny you mentioned outlets. In my bedroom I put outlets in the wall where my bed was to go. One outlet for each side of the bed for bedside lighting and clocks.I chose the location based on what they did in the model. I'm now thinking I might like the bed to go against a different wall in the room but the outlets are not set up for that. So I would suggest thinking about first and second choice locations for your bed and outlets to support that.

Since your room is open concept, I would put a couple floor outlets in so that you could add a lamp or speaker that might need power. Start by measuring off where you think your furniture placement will be and add one at each side of a sofa or sectional.I would also consider the tops of cabinets, outside spaces (think patios and near the base of roof lines, etc) and odd places like fireplace mantels that you may want to do Christmas decorating.
As for other things to consider, add a hose bib on each side of the house.
My sink is on a large, flat island. I love it that way. It gives us more counter space and it's easier to serve food on.

when we built we put minimum 2 outlets on every wall (well only 1 on short walls)
my favourite one is one our outside porch, we have an outlet up under the roof overhang that is controlled by a switch inside the front door for christmas lights
I like having the 2 level breakfast bar in the island, but that is partly because the sink is in the island & that way you can't see the dirty dishes from the living room space

Outlets on either side of where you plan to put the bed.
In the house we live in, there is a large master closet that i would LOVE to keep the ironing board in, but the is no outlet. There also isn't one in the laundry room besides for the washer/dryer.
Also i would love some in cabinet outlets (particularly in the bathrooms) that i could use to hide away charging things like toothbrush, hair clippers, sonicare. I hate having all that stuff out but if i put it in the cabinet the batteries die before in going to use it.

For some reason i only have light switches for the kitchen in one spot. If I don't turn on the light before I go in, I have to go back to turn on the switch.
Go for the higher ceilings throughout. The 9 foot ceilings really do make a difference.

I had an electrician add an outlet into my closest and I keep a garment steamer in there. I don't like looking at outlets. I wish the builder had considered placing the one under the windows so they could be hidden by the drapes when open.

I love our single level counter - ours is a peninsula, but same concept. It's the width of the cabinets below plus 8 or so inches for the overhang for stools. I love how open it is and makes a great spot for serving food buffet style and it's a great space for rolling out pizzas etc. Our sink is on the other side of the kitchen, but you could probably still see dishes if we kept them in the sink - we're just not dirty dishes in the sink people ymmv.

Don't focus on each wall having an outlet so much as imagine furniture placement. Like two outlets where nightstands would be. They spaced them so odd that natural bed and night stand placement meant cords were run a couple feet away instead of hidden.
My entry didn't have an outlet, which sucked because I couldn't plug in any pretty Christmas decorations or anything.
I wished I had requested a light over my shower. I would have added a dimmer.
They placed my thermostat smack in the middle of one wall preventing me from hanging any art or pictures. I actually paid to have that moved.
Ill tell you something that REALLY pissed me of. All switches were wired to at least one outlet as well as a fan. The dumb electrician made that switch-controlled outlet the absolute closest to the switch. The nice thing about switch-controlled outlets is you don't have to trip over furniture to get to a lamp on the other side of the room. Well there's no freakin point if the switch is directly above said outlet a foot by the door! I would have paid more attention to that. I alsonwould have had BOTH of the outlets for nightstands on a single bedroom lightswitch so both lamps could turn on.
Hope this helps.

I would have added a light over the tub so I could read better. I agree with Christmas lights and don't forget the outside lights.

Put two (4) outlets at your master bathroom vanity.
We often have the electric tooth brush and DH's razor charging when I want to dry my hair. It's a little thing, but it would be handy.

I forgot one more. In our bedroom and living room, we had two outlets placed whete our TV would be--one low and one high so we could mount our TV.
I also would have had them run a couple wires outside so music inside had a couple outdoor speakers as well.
Not elrctrician related, and at this stage, you're probably past this, but my husband wished the house gas line ran outside for grill hook-up.

when we finished our lower level, we added a USB/outlet combo in the bedrooms, and my boys use them all the time.
I hate the 2 level islands, having one wide open countertop is much preferable to me. We host the Christmas cookie party every year, and it's a great place to roll out the dough, and the kids can sit on the other side and stamp out cookies.
We also have open concept living/dining/kitchen area. I wish they had put an outlet in the floor. The way we (and previous owners) have the furniture arranged, there is a walkway behind the couch and end table. But a lamp is needed on that end table. I ended up feeding an extension cord under the couch til it was across from the wall outlet, then cutting a slit in the carpet there. I attached a magnet to the plug prongs and used a stronger magnet above the carpet to pull the extension cord underneath the carpet to the wall edge. Then fed it out of the carpet and plugged into the wall. It's actually pretty discreet, only one person has ever commented on the "cord that goes to nowhere" and you can't really feel it when you walk thru there. Still, would've been much nicer to just be able to plug it in under the couch! You could even keep the square of carpet that was cut out, to velcro back place in if you change the arrangement and it's exposed.

Ok I am adding the USB to the list, forgot about that. I will add an outlet to the pantry too. My DH is handy too so he can add some if we need any after the fact, just trying to get the hard ones done now. Will add one in bathroom drawer. A lot of what you guys mentioned, we got covered. Outlets on each side of bed. One by entryway. Two on front porch. Also on back porch and deck. Light in shower even though we have two small windows in there. We have a hose bib on 3 sides of the house so we are covered there. We have 9 foot ceilings thoughtout out the house including the daylight basement. Kitchen, living room, dining room all have cathedral. I have a cabinet for my kitchenaid with the lift, outlet in the back of cabinet.

We built a cupboard in our kitchen with outlets inside. I love it. We charge all of our devices in there and no one sees cords. It's like an office cupboard in the kitchen.

I'd definitely have the island one level. In fact, do you have to have the cooktop in the island? The house we are in now has just a big island and it's so handy to have that large flat surface. Baking, food serving for a crowd, food prep, cutting out fabric, school projects... it's really handy to have all that space. We also have room for barstools, which I also like. I can be prepping or working in the kitchen and people naturally sit down and talk to me.
If you still use regular alarm clocks, add more than 2 plug ins next to the bed. I like the alarm on my clock better (gradually increases in volume). With a phone plugged in there, the alarm, the light, and our adjustable bed, I need an adapter to be able to plug everything in.
Outside faucets--will you have a deck? Do you have a water faucet there? In this house, there isn't a faucet on the deck, so I have to either string the hose all the way across the yard or haul water out to the deck to water my herbs and flowers. And our deck is only 2 steps high. Put in an outlet off the deck as well. We have lights in our gazebo and had to improvise with an extension cord that we ran under the deck from the house.
I'm curious what you would have an outlet for in a pantry, unless it's a room rather than a closet sort of pantry. But there have been many pantries that I'd want a light in. Get it so that when you open the doors, the light comes on. Very handy to not fumble for a light switch and shouldn't be a big expense if there's already electrical in there and the walls are still open.

I would not do USB. That tech changes rapidly and could be useless soon.
I would however add double outlets next to anywhere you think you might put a charger. Next to beds, by the junk drawer, etc.

I don't care for the two-level counters, especially for a center island. I love the flexibility of one-level for serving buffet style.
I have two outlets, one at each end of the island, under the counter. I'm surprised at how much I use those when we have company. I might move the coffee maker to the island, for example, or a crock-pot of hot cider, or soup. It really helps the flow in my kitchen if people can serve themselves from the island.
I agree with an outlet in the front entry and a couple outside in good places for hanging lights, and under a covered patio where you might want to hang party lights. If you have plans for a fountain, think about the electricity for that, too.
Our need for outlets changed when we our daughters got cell phones and then laptops and suddenly we had 8 devices which needed charging. If I were building a home today, I might put 4 near each bed instead of 2. They don't live at home now, but when they come home they often bring friends and each friend has stuff that needs to charge overnight, too.

We added an outlet in the master bedroom walk in closet. Love it. I keep a small upright rechargeable vacuum plugged in and can easily vacuum the upstairs in between cleanings.

I wouldn't go too crazy with outlets for phones, ipads, laptops etc. They make the devices where you can plug in multiple devices to charge. I personally would prefer that to 4 outlets next to the beds in every room.
Some above mentioned the exterior gas line. I absolutely agree. We love not having to worry about running out of propane when grilling.

We have outlets just above our kitchen cabinets, so if we want decorative lighting there it's possible. In the mantel too.
More than one two-plug outlet on either side of the bed, especially if you have lamps, chargers, power bed, use an electric blanket or mattress pad, etc. You need more places to plug things in than you think.
We have a partially open stairway to the basement, so there is a railing that's a few feet long that connects to a wall. We had the electrician come back and add an outlet in the wall on the stairway side so we could do Christmas lights/garland on the railing.
An outlet on either side of outside doors, front and back.
We have lots of places where we have switches that control lights also controlled by other switches. For example, we can turn on the upstairs hallway lights from downstairs and from a couple different places in the hallway - so if we get home late we can turn on those lights before going upstairs and then turn them off when we get to the master bedroom.
We also have everything that can be dimmed on dimmer switches. Love that.

I remembered one more. We had spotlights placed on the back corners of our roof. This was in addition to typical patio lights. I had a second on/off switch on the second floor. This way I could flick on large lights if needed from the second floor.
