Update: We had our final weigh in for the 45 day shred on Saturday. I did it! I was the overall winner! I lost 30.7 pounds and won $300! I was determined to win that cash prize and really set my mind to it. My original goal was to lose 15 pounds, but once I hit 21 pounds by week 4 I decided to double my original goal and lose 30. I was really tired of it by the end of the challenge. I really thought I would go into binge mode (for a few days at least!) when I was done, but I have done really well. So far so good.
I am at 213 today, so my next goal is to get down under that 200 pound mark. I plan on using the money to get a bike. I already told my coach that and so now all the coaches at the gym and the owner are asking me if I got the bike yet. So it is too late to change my mind and spend the money on clothes! haha I will get the bike and get some new things when I hit my next goal.
Update: I just finished the 2nd week of my 45 day shred challenge and wanted to give an update on my progress! First of all halfway through the 2nd week, I gave in and decided to do the protein supplements. I was way under my calories and protein almost everyday, so I decided this would be the easiest way to fill the gap. Other than the protein supplement I am eating 100% clean, no sugar no bread or grain products, just lean meats, dairy, veggies, and some fruits. I am doing strength training 3 times a week and trying to get in a walk or playing outside with the kids when I can.
First week at the official weigh in I lost 6 pounds! Today was the 2nd weigh in and I lost an additional 7 pounds! I set my goal to 15 pounds, so I am definitely going to exceed that. Although it sounds impossible, I am going to try to continue my streak and see if I can lose 8 pounds over the next week! I know it is a lot, but I have plenty to lose and this shred is short term, so I am going to just go for it during this challenge. I plan to keep up with my 3 times a week strength training and try to get a walk in everyday along with being more active with my kids to burn those additional calories. I also plan to be in bed by 10:00 every night to get some extra sleep.
So I started a personal training challenge at a local gym tonight. It's a big 45 day shred challenge with teams and contests and cash prizes. I have never done any strength training and it's something I have wanted to do for a while, and this seemed like a great opportunity to get started.
I really didn't want to do any protein supplements, as I have been trying to eat clean and natural, and it doesn't seem to be that natural. However, based on my stats, I am supposed to get 115 grams of protein a day. In order to get all that protein I would have to eat almost all my calories in protein rich foods (meat, dairy, and eggs) not to mention it would be way more food than I normally eat in a day anyway, even before I add in my fruits and veggies!
I get that with the reduced calorie diet and the strength training they want to make sure we get enough protein to prevent muscle loss. I am just disappointed that I am going to have to add the supplement to get it. Besides the "processed" factor of the supplements, what if I just don't like the taste?
There are about 80 people participating in the challenge and the first prize is $300 and a free massage. It would be really nice to win!
I have been doing the intermittent fasting with good success and plan to continue with that along with the strength training.
Anyway, I would love to hear what others experiences are with this.

I am not a dietician nor a nutritionist nor a sports guru, but that sounds like way too much protein to me. You are just starting out, you will see muscle gain quickly, but I truly don't believe you need to change your diet dramatically to do so.
That said, I would pay attention to when you eat protein based on your workout schedule.

I would do one high protein supplement. I usually have a protein bar after workouts. Where are you getting your stats?

That is quite a lot of calories in protein unless you are doing really lean protein. I would try the protein supplement and not eat that many grams and see how it goes.

My goal is about the same, 115 grams of protein a day. I rarely hit it, but I try. It is hard to eat that much protein, at least for me. I usually get between 90-100 grams a day. I do drink a protein drink once a day, usually right after a workout. I also try to eat high protein foods. One of favorite snacks is nitrate-free beef jerky.

I've heard that the body can only use 25 - 30 grams of protein at a meal. That's 4 protein packed meals. Still seems like a lot.

Is the gym profiting from the sale of protein supplements? If so, I would be super cautious, as them telling you need that much protein could just be a way for them to make a commission.

The goal at my gym is about 100g of protein a day. It is impossible for me to hit it without doing a protein shake right after working out. I didn't want to to do supplements either, but I've come to really like the big boost of protein first thing (I work out at 5:30 am). And, yes, my gym sells a protein mix, but I don't buy it and most people don't.

America's obsession with protein consumption could/is having detrimental effects on our health. There is a great very well referenced book that talk about studies that show that high protein consumption is leading to more diabetes, coronary heart disease, etc. I will say that although the author does promote a plant based diet, the information about high protein consumptions whether its from plant or meat sources is compelling. It's called Proteinholic by Dr. Garth Davis. Great read. I personally don't use protein supplements. Even when I was in hard core training for a half-ironman I never supplemented and still gained muscle and lost weight. IF you get enough calories in per day, you can easily get enough protein in. Just my suggestion.

I decided not to do the supplements. I will add a few more protein rich foods to my diet. I have been eating clean and probably not getting as many calories as I need anyway, so I have room for some yogurt and cottage cheese, etc. If after a couple weeks I am not getting good results, I will re-think it.
I start the strength training on Monday, it is really going to be a challenge! I am going to really work it, the $300 cash prize(and a massage session!) is an excellent motivator!!

I was about to tell you it's not that hard, but I looked, and I usually only get about 75grams a day and I feel like I eat a LOT of protein, lol

I weigh between 117-120 lbs and try to get around 90g per day and that's hard some days. I can do some high protein bars if they aren't packed with fiber. Protein powders; however, are not my friend- bloat, bloat, bloat... If you do start, take it slow.

I just wouldn't worry about it. Assuming normal caloric intake (and probably even with reduced caloric intake), I seriously doubt you're not going to have muscle loss in 45 days if you've never done any weight training because you're not hitting 100 grams of protein. I read a few studies a while back that showed very little benefit if any over .6g/lb even with heavy strength training.

Awesome job!! That is great!
I know being clean is a goal of yours so if you search the Internet, there are some protein powders that claim to be cleaner than others. For instance, I use SFH, which gets good reviews. But they do cost more. There are others out there too.

That's awesome! Congratulations! If you don't mind, could you share what you eat? I'm considering doing a ketogenic diet, but I know it will be hard. I am way too dependent on grains.

That's awesome! Congratulations! If you don't mind, could you share what you eat? I'm considering doing a ketogenic diet, but I know it will be hard. I am way too dependent on grains. I cut out all non-veggie/fruit carbs. No bread, pasta, potato, rice, etc. I did have 3 "slip ups" during the challenge. I had french fries once. I thought about those fries for several days and made a plan to eat them on a Saturday after my weigh in. I had a salad and some fries at a favorite sandwich shop. Once I had pizza at a birthday party. I had a plan to just eat salad and fruit at the party, but in the end I gave in and had some pizza. Another time I had a small ice cream cone. Normally I think this is no big deal to have a treat once every week or 2, but I would have rather been "perfect" during the 45 days. Other than the pizza day I stayed under my calories, so it worked out. I didn't let any of my "slip ups" derail my progress, so that is definitely a step in the right direction! So I have been eating lots of greens (salads) and veggies, fish, chicken, turkey burgers (no bread), some fruit, greek yogurt, cottage cheese. One of my faves was taco salad: lettuce, seasoned ground turkey, tomatoes, olives, cheese, sour cream, and taco sauce. The sour cream and cheese was definitely a splurge for my diet, but I weighed everything and kept within my calorie restriction. I decided against the ketogenic diet because I didn't want to cut out fruit and I also didn't want to do high fat because it's hard to do high fat and restrict calories in my opinion. I am also doing the intermittent fasting, I only eat between 12:00 and 7:00. I did strength training 3 times a week and tried to fit in a walk whenever I could. I started jumping rope also, but it's been a challenge! It's not as easy (or fun) as when I was a kid! So my goal now is to up my calories a bit, because I really was too low for long term sustainability and I don't want to mess up my metabolism. I will still do low carb, with occasional treats, but I plan on adding more healthy fats. Just try to continue to add healthy habits and build up my rope jumping endurance! I am looking forward to the next challenge and my next cash prize! haha! Thanks for the "congrats" everyone! Julie Save
