I have been a vegetarian on and off for many years, but have finally committed fully to a plant based lifestyle. I can't believe how easy it was and how well I feel after just two weeks. I'm a teacher and have a bit more time and energy right now to try out new recipes. Vegan aioli has already changed my life What's even better is I watched 101 reasons to be vegan with my husband and he has decided to join me as well! A question for the wfpb peas: can you recommend a good vegan online community? Thanks

birukitty @dayzeepetals and rainbow are three peas who follow plant based or vegan diets. Perhaps they can point you in the right direction:)

Awesome!! Glad you all ready feel so much better. DH went WFPB completely with me about 4 weeks ago and he loves it. I'm actually quite shocked that he's stuck with it since he's and born and raised Texan where meat is always on the table.
I'm in several FB groups that always provide support and recipe ideas. Some of them are geared more towards a particular way to eat. For instance, McDougall Friends follow his book "The Starch Solution" which uses more starches. Great group, but I just can't eat that many potatoes. Tons of success stories though. Another one is Jill McKeever, Plant-Based Recipe Hoarders. Great friendly group! She also has a YouTube channel where she puts videos of recipes. Forks Over Knives Plant based group is another that follows the Forks Over Knives way (which is truly WFPB no oil). Finally, if you have an instantpot, there is a Plant-Based Instant Pot group with TON of recipes to cook with your IP. IP is a staple in my house!

Maybe that was the final push I needed to buy an IP My husband is a science geek and when I came over this very informative talk about being vegan I knew he might like it. He's had his second plant based day with no complaining.

Dinner today was portobello "steak" fajitas from the oh she glows cookbook. Very tasty! That sounds fantastic. I've done something similiar before, but I mostly ate it since DH still doesn't like mushrooms. I've recently started using Copy Me That to save recipes I see online. Super simple and has an app also. I think you can share your recipes with people. So if you end up getting it let me know and I can share some recipes with you. All WFPB recipes.

What wonderful news and it's great to hear how well you are doing!
As far as online groups I follow most of mine on facebook like dazeepetals does. Mine are the Forks over Knives group which posts recipes and success stories. They also have a great website and sell a wonderful cookbook that I use quite a bit. I also follow a group called Food Revolution Network and another called Plant Based News.
Hope that helps and if you have any other questions, just ask. We are here to support you.

Another great day. I used leftover portobellos from yesterday to make a delicious sandwich and dinner is tex mex pizza. I went shopping with my daughter and we had smoothies from Joe and the juice as a treat.
The biggest challenge now will be reducing some of the fat from our diet.

On facebook I enjoy Clean Food Dirty Girl-- then there are plenty of plant based other groups. I participate in the vegan one, too, 'cause I really am vegan but also PBWF. Been 6 weeks now. Just sorry I waited so long.

Just sorry I waited so long. I'm in several of the vegan groups too, but I find they can sometimes get way into semantics since vegan really is about the ethical side. It can get quite heated with some topics. Congrats on 6 weeks!! Keep it up!

I apologize for my rude hijack here... but.... dazeepetals is the plant based IP group a good place to find new vegetable recipes, even if one is omnivore? I need to spice up our vegetables and variety. Thank you in advance!

I don' like when the plant based people dismiss the ethical part because it is such a HUGE part. You don't have to live it but you should certainly respect it - ESPECIALLY if you are in their space. Thanks- no going back. My bell cannot be unrung. Even my honey is on board- and it's cleared up 80% of his stomach woes.

I like to think of it as a curve. You have doing it for their health plant based folks on one side and die hard vegan folks on the other and then you have most of the folks crossing in the middle.
I'm one of those who is in the middle. I started this for health reasons but very quickly it became for me about saving animals and eradicating the misery they have to suffer. That part (about the animals) is extremely important to me.
When I shop for things like cosmetics I shop only for those that aren't tested on animals. I won't buy a car with leather seats. I do still like leather purses but I only buy them second hand. (Remember what I said about me being in the middle, I don't claim to be a 100% vegan). I do still wear leather shoes. I don't use honey. I don't use milk or milk products-again I started because of health reasons but I kept on doing this once I learned about the brutal dairy industry that milk cows and the calves have to go through. Same with eggs.
I agree with you Peace. The ethical part is a huge part even for those of us who are WFPB or somewhere in the middle. I understand your passion, truly I do. But let's not paint everyone who is WGPB as not being ethical or unfeeling towards the plight of animals. Many are very much.

I can't digest beans or other legumes, or soy. Not just some gas... they cause extreme pain and other symptoms that are impolite to discuss. Could I eat this way and still get enough protein?

I can't digest beans or other legumes, or soy. Not just some gas... they cause extreme pain and other symptoms that are impolite to discuss. Could I eat this way and still get enough protein? First, let me ask if you already have a high fiber diet? For some people, beans/legumes etc cause GI distress because they aren't used to the fiber content. That can be acclimated to by slow introduction of the offending agents in small quantities. The other thing to consider it making sure beans/legumes are soaked prior to cooking which can help decrease some of the phylates and other enzymes that cause gas and GI discomfort. You can certainly get protein from other sources. Fruit and veggies contain protein and when consumed in large quantities can provide you daily intake of protein. Also quinoa is very high in protein. Other great ideas are hemp seeds, nuts or nut butters, peas (highest protein veggie), and seeds.

Seems like the instapot craze hasn't reached my part of the world yet. No way to buy it except amazone. I guess i'll just wait a bit. Usually the stores here are quick to notice american trends I'm thinking about getting an airfryer instead. Anyone have any experience with cooking vegetables in those?

We are working towards it, in steps. If it were just me, it would be much easier but transitioning my whole family where I don't end up cooking four separate meals is taking time. We will get there The one I thought would be the easiest to convince is my "eeek, look at the baby animals, they're so fluffy!" ten year old. Apparently that only counts for animals that aren't in her plate? Damn, this kid is a carnivore. I joined a few plant based and vegan cooking Facebook groups but ended up leaving them. 2peas has nothin' on those places. I just couldn't bother with all the drama. I borrowed "I could never go vegan" by Kristy Turner and have gotten some great recipes out of it.

Other great ideas are hemp seeds, nuts or nut butters, peas (highest protein veggie), and seeds. We eat a ton of vegetables already... lots of broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, carrots, squash, lots of spinach and salad. Usually dinner has two or three veg and lunch is usually salad. We do great with fiber, but beans and soy cause worse than pain, if I eat a little beans with Mexican food for dinner I am doubled over with diarrhea for two days. It is a clear intolerance and happens every time. So easing in doesn't change that for me. I have always read that for vegans including a wide range of foods is important and I don't know if I can include enough especially if limiting nuts/seeds as suggested due to fat content. I have a vegan kid and want to eat very healthfully, no current concerns but want to keep it that way.

Well since we're on the topic of diets....I hope this doesn't sound dumb but do you feel full and satisfied on a plant based diet? (Yes I am a dyed in the wool carnivore who has pretty much never had a meal without meat.)

I watched Forks over Knives about six weeks ago, and decided to give the Whole Food Plant Based thing a try. I'm 63, and starting to see the health issues piling up fo me, family, and friends my age. I watched my parents go downhill as they approached their 70's, so I figured I have 20 GOOD years left, and with the diabetes and cancer history in my family, it was time to get a handle on things.
I already didn't eat dairy, gluten or corn, due to food intolerances, so I haven't been eating junk food for a while anyway. In the six weeks since I stopped eating animal products, my GERD is pretty much gone, and I've lowered my acid blocker by half. My joint pain from Psoriatic Arthritis has disappeared, and I've lowered my dose of anti-inflammatory by half. I've tried to lower it twice before, and usually by the time I get to this dose, my hands are swollen up and the joints are killing me. Not this time! I FEEL SO GOOD!! I can't even begin to tell you how good I feel. Honestly, I'm surprised when I look in the mirror, because I feel 20 years younger, LOL.
I am losing weight, very slowly, about 8 lbs so far. I don't understand why I'm not hungry, but I'm not. In the past, @5pm when I'd start organizing dinner, I would be so hungry I'd snack on anything I could find. Now, I'm really not starving at all, and can cook dinner without wanting to chew the leg of a chair. I'm careful with my meal planning and try to include higher protein plant ingredients in my meals. The Vegan Instant Pot group has given me tons of inspiration.
If you're on the fence, try it! You've got nothing to gain but your health!
