While dress code has been mentioned in past interviews I've been on, it's been the basic business casual, casual dress or what not. Things like tattoos, hair color and piercings didn't really come up until I was given the employee handbook at orientation. I've had several jobs where I had to cover up my tattoo on my ankle, but that was never mentioned during the interview process.

I probably would have brought it up if it was an issue for me. I'm sure she will know better next time. The interviewer may have either assumed she would just take it out for work or cover it.
I had a pierced eyebrow and tongue in college. I always asked at the interview if I could wear my eyebrow ring or would be required to take it out.

If I were her, I might mention to them that she generally would take it out as per their preference, but that it's new and would cause problems with the healing to do that now, and tell them she's using the clear stud for now because of that. She could manage to work into the conversation that she could have told them that during the interview process if she'd known it would be an issue.

My daughter had her very first interview today and was hired on the spot. She left the interview with the candy/soda/ice cream menu as well as a packet of information including dress code which addresses piercings and tattoos. It states only ear piercings are to be seen - all other piercings and tattoos need to removed/covered. No awkward conversation to be had.
