He was 87 years old and until about 9 months ago had been in amazing health.
I got a message from my brother Sat morning to say that Dad had been taken to hospital in the early hours. Chest infection and heart attack they thought. The doctors said it would be a good idea for family to come so I packed a bag and drove down (400 kilometres away) I have been off work for 3 days with a really bad sinus and chest infection but got myself together and got here at about 5pm.
Dad passed away at 9pm that night. I had brought Mum home about 7.30 and my brother left at 8.30 - Dad said he was kicking him out. So when my brother left Dad was quite comfortable dozing watching the footy and he slipped away. No pain and he was apparently quite chipper right until the end chatting away.
I didnt see Dad beforehand as I was so unwell. I was thinking that as he was moving to a private room I'd see him in the morning. I'm not too upset about that as he knew I was there and chuckled that I was banished and that is typical Dad.
We went back to the hospital and all gathered there and sat with him for a few hours. Everyone will come to Mum's tomorrow and we'll work out all the funeral stuff. I ended up driving on my own as my husband had hurt his wrist and wouldn't be able to drive that distance and I didn't know when I'd be back. I was ok, just took it easy.
So glad I came, I was with Mum when she got the call and could support her, then got to hold Dad's hand and say goodbye while he was still warm. I am so lucky to have had my lovely Dad for so long.
I am very close to my siblings and their partners so we've spent lots of time together sharing memories. Dad had 9 granddaughters (no grandsons) and he was so proud of them, it has been lovely hearing them share special times too.

I'm so sorry. On the positive side you are lucky that he was here for so long, 87 is a great age and lots of time for great memories. Of course it is still never enough and we are still never ready.
You'll always be glad you made that trip and that you were surrounded by family during this time. It was also the right decision not to see him, had he not passed away it would have been awful to have infected him with whatever bug you have. As you said, he knew you'd come and you were there with your mum and siblings.
It's tough to lose a parent, my Dad died almost 3 years ago and even times like this it stirs it all up. I admit I've been surprised how emotional I still am even 3 years down the track. Take the time to grieve...do you have compassionate leave at work, I took the full 5 days and I definitely needed it, take it all if you have it.
Once again you have my deepest sympathies.
